Can you all take this discussion to the Raysen thread?

Thank for this, Kate703, it's really helpful. I can finally mark Thursday or Friday down on my calendar -- aka, the day I will be compulsively calling my girlfriend to check the mail every 10 minutes. All this for a rejection, too.

Kate703 - sorry to hear you got your Iowa letter. What does your - or anyone else's at this point - ISIS admissions profile say - has the database been updated? How realistic is it to still be holding out hope if still no phone call but profile still says in progress? I just joined here, so sorry if I missed this info in a previous post. I did read back a few pages.

My ISIS status is also "In Progress." Though I applied to the Nonfiction program, which apparently plans on accepting more people than they can fund this year. I'm just assuming rejection anyway.

My despair is deep right now. I don't know what I did wrong. /existential crisis

I know James Franco (he went to UCLA these last two years before going off to grad school) and I can tell you he is going to Columbia's MFA for fiction, AND NYU for an MFA in either screenwriting or directing. He is doing both degrees concurrently.

Re: [Raysen] Persona [In reply to] Can't Post

I told my uncle the other day that one of the great ironies of stumbling onto this forum -- oooh deja vu ---- is that it stabilizes me because I know when the rejections are coming so I am not devastated by them but I KNOW when the rejections are coming so I give up hope. I think I'd be a lot lonelier and even a little depressed it it weren't for the openness of people in this forum. On a couple of occasions, for a variety of reasons, I have felt the need to keep something close to the chest and so I just didn't mention it like my Texas rejection which I didn't mention until others did and now that sara e.g. has told of her fellowship at VCU I'll tell you all that I was offered the graduate scholars fellowship. Before I was ready to be open I just didn't mention it... I didn't say, "I have a mystery big money offer"; "I have a rejection from a mystery top ten school." That's all. Its an open forum and the openness is treasured at a deep level by all of us.

no more here.

Back to being supportive and thank you all my fellow applicants who have helped calm my nerves through your openness the past couple of weeks.

Anyone here thinking of accepting without funding if they could get a huge*** loan? My EFC amount on my FAFSA report is $0, so I would qualify to borrow it all. Crazy thought, though I have no more undergrad loans. Had a dream about looking at potential ROI on all the schools I applied to.

Re: [Kate703] Re:Iowa rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

Does anyone believe that Iowa actually accepts via post? I am doubting this (at least for fiction). I know it has been said that they accept in tiers, calls first, then post, but I *have a feeling* all the acceptances have been telephoned. Any ideas here?

Re: [daniv] Re:Iowa rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

Based on people's posts on TSE and the MFA blog, a few people got Iowa acceptances via snail mail late last week. So I think it happens. I believe they were both fiction and poetry people.

I'm feeling like the Iowa letters that are coming in the mail now are rejections though.

I was finally rejected by Michener today. So that's two No's (the other being UMass) and I've yet to hear from Cal-Irvine (ha!), Syracuse (be serious, now), Oregon, George Mason, and San Francisco State. I am shitting my pants, here.

Re: [unsaid78] Michener [In reply to] Can't Post

I appreciate it. The rejection doesn't sting nearly so much as finding out on Monday that the only reason I was still 'alive', when so many had already been given the bad news, was that MCW was waiting to receive my electronic file from the grad admissions office. After that, getting turned down just seemed like a matter of time.

I've spent the morning revising my portfolio story, which I'd neglected to do out of fear that I'd find it perfectly rejectable. Eh, it is and it isn't. I love what's at its core but can see some of the lifeless prose that might well do me in. Anyway, the point is that I can't let this process stop me from working on a piece that at this point has more heart than polish. So that crap is over.

Do you all get the feeling the same people are getting accepted or rejected at multiple schools? I read on Seth's blog that this has been answered here but have not found it: What did they do/write about/what is their GRE score, etc. Anyone see those responses?

Yeah, I get that too, Anna. But I suppose it makes sense that strong applicants appeal to more than one program.
