Re: [SaraBellum] UMass rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh, I knew Alabama was a long shot. I just meant that with both programs the letters came from the graduate school, not the department, and they were written as though I wasn't qualified to gain admittance to the graduate school, which I find mildly insulting. I understand that both programs are extremely selective; I just wish the rejections were coming from the departments and not the graduate school.

Re: [Sugah] March Madness [In reply to] Can't Post

Sugah, That's an interesting tidbit about Penn State. I'm surprised they emphasized the GRE. I always thought it was the last thing they considered. I'm still waiting to hear from them, but am assuming I didn't get in. I didn't realize they only accepted two in each genre. Ach! I'm still planning on figuring out a way to pay for Pitt. That post on your Pitt blog about how it's not worth finding a way to pay for school if your not funded was kinda a downer for me...Still have to hear the final word from three schools so we'll see. I'm still really excited about Pitt though!

I got my letter from Iowa today too, and I am out as well.

Oh well. After four rejections I can take the hint :)

Best of luck to everyone else!

Do you have any more pending? I still have only heard from 2 schools.

By the way, is it too early to ask who here is planning on going through this process again next year?

Re: [looking4] The Rolling of the Heads Begins at Iowa [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still waiting to hear from Pacific University, Antioch, and Warren Wilson.

I've got to decide by April first, so hopefully I'll hear from them by then.

The past three years I've gone through this process and put all my eggs in one basket and, for those three years, my eggs have been dropped. So this year I decided enough was enough. I applied to other schools and now I have options. So, no, I am not doing this again. I want my MFA and two years will go by whether I am working toward it or not. I'd rather have those two years bring me my degree.

Re: [looking4] The Rolling of the Heads Begins at Iowa [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still trying to hold out hope for this year, but each day it gets a little harder. Not hearing from Brooklyn was a blow, because I thought of it as a safety school. And I'm so in love with the faculty there, I guess I just assumed they would love me back. It doesn't work with boys, why would it work with MFA programs?

But yes, if I find myself unrequited in April, I think I'll try again next year. I only applied to 5 programs this year. There were so many others that looked really good to me and for money reasons I couldn't apply to them all. I think it will be a little easier the second time around. Now I have a base, both research wise and template wise. I'll probably change my WS significantly, but I have statements of teaching philosophy now. I have SOPs, personal statements, and letters of intent. I have my achievements listed and categorized. I have recommendations. And I have time. If I start in May instead of August, it'll stretch out the work load. Definitely going to take a little break though, to just write without any thought of what for.

Someone is at my door who wants to tell me about Jesus. Sheesh. Is Jesus working for the US Postal Service these days? Then by all means,

Rejected today by FSU in poetry via snail mail, letter dated Feb. 26. It has been a rollecoaster -- true shared joy for those getting into their dream schools with funding and choking down the bitter pill my writing is not where I thought it was. Gulp. [I have 5 more schools to hear from, but am expecting rejections from UF and Arkansas based on others having been accepted by phone or email already. That leaves FIU, Greensboro and UMiss.] Good luck everyone! And keep writing. I will.

Well, I am done. This is my fourth try, so I am pretty much finished with all of this. Doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Things are not looking good right now. I have one rejection from Texas State and one presumably on the way from Iowa.

Still waiting on Houston (though it seems I may have messed up by sending my application and fee on paper to the department only and nothing to the grad school -- though they did cash my check), UC-Irvine, UT-Michener, San Diego State, Johns Hopkins, and Warren Wilson.

I'm all for trying again (obviously, since this is my fourth try), so good luck to everyone who decides to give it another shot. But for me -- enough is enough!

Not too early. In the beginning of February I was anxiously anticipating my acceptances. Now, in the beginning of March, I am doing the same for my rejections... I guess upon receiving my last rejection letter I will take math class at Community College and apply to Engineering and Construction Management major an state university. In four years I will be making good money, driving H1 and give tips to junior editors at local literary magazines... :))))

Re: [dunnkc] The Rolling of the Heads Begins at Iowa [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm going through it next year, probably. Which will be the third. Although I'm tempted not to, but I want the experience and I think I'll just regret it if I don't persevere.

Granted, I have heard nothing official from my four schools, but I'm guessing two of them are out, and the other two are a crapshoot. And it's only four schools, which is all I could afford this year, and all I really wanted to apply to (being waitlisted in a place I didn't particularly want to move to last year made me rethink my approach, which may have limited me this time in terms of potential acceptances). I had people tell me I should apply more places here in NYC, but why? I don't want to go to sarah lawrence, and Columbia has taken enough of my money, without giving me a particularly rigorous, satisfying, or supportive grad school experience. I realize the departments would be completely different, and I can't speak to the experiences of others, but when you know it's not a good fit, it's not a good fit. So I applied places that seemed like good fits for me. They, perhaps, will not agree, but I'll have to just resend my applications next year to remind them that I still think so. After that, maybe I'll give up the dream.

Stick with it as long as you can!

dunnkc,
Not sure if you got my previous post on San Diego State, but they only received 70 applications this year! Not sure how many places they have, but that's pretty good odds either way. Did you apply for fiction or poetry?

Fiction...it would be cool just to get a waitlist or something for a little encouragement.

Good luck to you -- are you applied for fiction or poetry?

Rejected from Emerson 3/3 as well, by snail mail. At least the letter wasn't as horrible as the UMASS one.

Pretty bummed out, that was my top choice.

I just received my Iowa rejection for fiction. Taking it better than I thought I would. I'm beginning to feel philosophical about the whole thing.

So far I've been waitlisted at two schools, received outright rejections from four, and assume that three (TX State, Minnesota, and UNCW are rejections). That leaves Hollins, Montana, Austin, Houston, and UNM.

Deep breath.

Have you tried applying to more "safety" schools or are you not interested in them? Are you Fiction or Poetry?

This is my first time applying and my situation is a little bit different. When I started this process I was willing to go anywhere but I've been wanting to move to a particular city for 4 years now and decided that if I don't go there, I'm not going anywhere. Unfortunately, the schools in this particular city aren't a fit for me so I won't be trying this again next year. I'll just apply for an MA and if, in my thirties, I decide to go ahead and do this again then I will. Hopefully by then I won't really need an MFA.

Interesting. It seems like a truckload of you guys are here in NYC.

I agree with you. I had all my friends ask why I didn't apply to schools here. I'm like, "Uh I did undergrad, high school, jr. high, and elementary school here, don't ya think it's enough??" You do what is best for you and frankly, even though you technically are in one program it's not like you're immune from the rest of the university.

Re: [looking4] The Rolling of the Heads Begins at Iowa [In reply to] Can't Post

I applied in Fiction.

I've applied to a wide range of schools over my four years of applying, including low residency. I probably had more "safety" schools, if you can call them that, in previous years. I was waitlisted at Sarah Lawrence and St. Mary's (California) my second year and waitlisted at just St. Mary's last year. The current list of schools I applied to consists of those that happened to spark my interest this year -- many of them I've never applied to before. Some of them were also recommended to me by my local workshop instructors.

I am similarly interested a certain location -- so I applied to three schools in Texas, even though I knew they were quite selective.

Who knows, maybe I shouldn't write this year off yet, since I've only heard back officially from one school out of eight. But that first rejection letter of the season just brings back all kinds of bad memories.

I got my rejection letter from Iowa today. I was expecting it, but it still hurt quite a bit. A beer and "The Office" helped, though.

I don't know if I'm gonna be able to find the energy for the rest of the rejections. I don't know if I can do this next year. I'm already embarrassed and dreading having to report all the bad news to my parents and friends.

I hate it. Bunches.
