Re: [ecletters] WISCONSIN Rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, as I said afterword, the comment I made came across as sounding very critical of the Iowa faculty, which I didn't mean to be. Obviously, I don't go to school there, so I can't really speak with any authority about them. I do know Jim McPherson though, and I think he is an amazing person.

I was more speaking of my experience at another very prestigious university where I found the all-star faculty to be more engrossed in their own work than in the students--that probably isn't the case at Iowa. I really should have been more careful about my wording with that one; I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Couldn't agree more! Rejection is just part of the writer's life, and MFA applications are one of the many crapshoots out there.

Re: [reality writes] what to do with rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel the need to commiserate, as I haven't told many people about applying this year. I've been rejected by Purdue, Wisconsin and Wash U (it still stings, even though none were my first choice). The icing was when the Purdue letter arrived today (that's right, February 29th!) lying happily on top of my Wisconsin letter (which I already knew about). Why can't they just put us out of our misery? I hate checking my phone to see if it still works...I didn't pay $50 for this...

umass [In reply to] Can't Post

I caved yesterday and called the UMASS-Amherst graduate admissions office, and asked them to look up my file (since the website hadn't been updated yet, and no letter). Rejected! Oh well. Sure enough, today my profile on the website says "pending" and I assume the letter will arrive within a day or so.

For all that these boards have fueled my neurosis about this whole process, I am also very glad that they exist and that you are all here talking about this. Knowing when the first calls went out already prepared me for not getting in, and by the time I called the office the news didn't hurt as much. So, that's something...

Congrats to those who got in! Crossing my fingers for the rest of us and the rest of the schools...

I'm feeling down...now 8/10 of my total schools have notified, in most cases both acceptees and waiting list folks...and those were all the schools w/good funding too, so even if I got in to one of the last 2 schools, I'm not sure I would accept.

Blah. You know it's a possibility, but you just don't want to think it will happen to you.

i got my rejection letter from umass today. at least i can stop obsessing over that particular school now. altho i wish rejection letters didn't use the words "we regret to inform you." Makes it sound like someone has died.

March Madness [In reply to] Can't Post

1) I just got that rejection letter from Michigan for Fiction this morning that I've been waiting for all week. Because of this speakeasy and other blogs saying people got emails two weeks ago, I knew it was coming, thus it really wasn't so bad. In fact, I'm surprisingly OK with it. It was a very nicely written letter, then I ripped it to shreds and moved on. Rejection sucks; but knowing it's coming somehow softened the blow.

2) I wish I had told no one I was applying, because as the reality that I might not get in anywhere becomes more and more apparent, it will suck when people start asking where I'm going and I have to say "No one wanted me; I'm selling my car and using the money to backpack around Europe."

3) 1 down, 12 to go. Happy 1st of the month to all and to all a good month.
March Madness, eh?

1 down and 12 to go? it's not nearly over for you. chin up. i wish i'd applied to all the schools i'd originally intended to. oh, well. it's not over till it's over!!!!

thank goodness for March.

p.s. anyone hear anything about syracuse. someone posted on Seth's blog that they'd contacted everyone in early Feb?? seems like if that were true there would be someone on here boasting acceptance, strange?

Official Syracuse rejection in the mail yesterday, Feb. 28, for poetry. Liamolly, I feel the same way - the blow of rejection was softened by hearing about others' acceptances and rejections, so I wasn't too surprised. I downed a shot or two of tequila with my boyfriend and filed the letter in my recycling bin. Kadence, I think Syracuse calls went out back in early Feb (check out writingmfa2008.blogspot.com), so unfortunately I'm pretty sure that anyone who hasn't heard is getting the dreaded letter.

Expecting a UMASS rejection letter in the mail today or Monday, and Brown's also out (I assume). 3 schools down, 7 to go!

Good luck to everyone!

Re: [Vesuvia] March Madness [In reply to] Can't Post

I think I've been rejected from Florida. It looks like there were 3-4 acceptance notifications by email yesterday in fiction. I feel embarrassed, for some reason. My being able to go there would have been sort of a remote possibility, because moving isn't so feasible right now, so it's not the end of the world. But it would have been nice for my first response to be an acceptance. This week, one of my recommenders emailed me to say that she was sure I'd be receiving a flood of acceptances any day now. Ha!

Last night, I was feeling sulky and depressed about this and drank a little too much wine shortly after eating yogurt. Which was not smart thing to do. And this morning I had a meltdown about our house being a mess, which I think was really fueled by my feeling like a loser.

But now I am trying to imagine positive things the admission committee could have been saying about my application. ("This is great work--but she's just not the best fit for our program. I'm sure she'll have plenty of other programs to choose from!") And trying not to cringe about one of the work samples I sent that I felt iffy about.

I have 7 more schools to go, and after I get over this one I'll just stay open to seeing what happens.

I haven't heard anything about Syracuse and fiction. It's at the top of my list and I'm nervous. It seems like they tend to call people the first week of March, so I expect to fall headlong into obsession and anxiety first thing on Monday monring.

oh good god. I feel the SAME way. At least as far as drinking too much and letting the house go to shit and just being REALLY FREAKIN' EDGY ALL THE TIME.

*commiserating hug*

You know what makes me feel better though? Talking to my professors who couldn't be more wonderful or supportive. One of mine introduced me to another professor as a "poet extraordinaire". HA. He then said that my papers had made him want to say "you write like a fucking angel". He's a charmer with a PhD from Johns Hopkins, so basically he's my favorite personal cheerleader. So, you know, I suppose my point is that you should have a professor flatter the shit out of you and then go listen to your favorite band. It's lifted my spirits, for sure.

Mine arrived today -- I was surprised that it was a form letter from the graduate school, and not a note from the department. I was expecting at least some sort of "we got X number of applications and therefore turned away many fine writers" line. How anti-climactic. And somewhat tacky. They got six hundred people to tailor their applications to their specifications, and they can't even send us a nicer form letter? Harumph.

Ah well -- onward!

Kadence, I realized that my above post sounds borderline b*tchy, and I should have specified that I believe if poets haven't heard yet, they might want to start expecting the "dreaded letter" (ugh, or maybe I shouldn't have said anything, because that still sounds totally depressing). I know fiction works on a different timetable, so if you're in for fiction, then there's still time - hope you get good news!

Today's news:

1) Rejected by Michigan. The letter was graciously written on cream-colored stationery. Classy.

2) Waitlisted at Wisconsin-Madison. The email was semi-encouraging yet realistic.

I envy you for that Wisconsin waitlist. Not because you have a chance to get in (very few actually turn that program down) but because it says something about the strength of your sample. Here I sit, five rejections and zero waitlists, wondering if I'm even making it into the top 20% of the applicant pool at any of these places.

I've got eleven more schools left to hear from, as opposed to your four, but I'd trade places with you any day.

Just wanted to dedicate this song to the writers!

Such a happy song for such a fraught season of waiting.

I thought I'd try to add some good karma to the wretchedness of this in between state.

My tally:

one rejection
six ?s
one acceptance (M.A. in Lit, though)--> this was my safety, feel-good-about-myself application. :)

hang in there, everybody!

Yeah... I have also told everyone I know and everyone I've met in the last few months that I applied to MFA programs. I even wrote a letter to the administration of the school where I teach and basically said I wouldn't be back next year because I'd be pursuing a degree in creative writing.

So, yesterday, I sat down with my principal and begged her not to give my job away. She graciously agreed to hold my position until the beginning of May, thank goodness.

Well thanks benny. It's hard to keep things in perspective though. I was flat out rejected from Michigan. And now I'm wondering, what if I don't get in anywhere else? I don't know if I can stomach trying this again next year. It's been a long, long time since I've wanted something so badly. I know I'm not alone in that respect.
