I love the idea of 'Difficult Listening'. As a young man, I listened to Igor Stravinsky's Ballet Suites--they seemed a complete cacophony to me, but I sensed that familiarity would help me 'get' it. Then, one day I found myself playing the music from "Fire Bird" in my head, and I realized that I wanted to get to a turntable right away, and listen and listen and listen. I've continued enjoying Stravinsky and used a similar embrace of the awkward-and-initially-unlovable to become a fan of the solo violin, Prokofiev, Franck, and others...
Many of my favorite 'Hard' SciFi writers are also the result of this approach: Ursula LeGuin, Greg Bear, Sherri Tepper, Connie Willis, and Ian Banks. Connie W. and Ian B., in particular, are the most densely written--but one's stick-to-it-ive-ness is amply rewarded.
