Introduce Yourself! Can't Post

We've changed the name of this forum to Announcements & Introductions in order to give new patrons a place to post their first time hellos.

If you've just joined the Speakeasy or you're finally ready to come out of lurking mode, please stop by here and say Hi.

My life, on display, in writing [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey everyone, I'm new to Speakeasy and this seems like the best place to begin. (The introduction area seemed to be somewhat inaccessible.) I've been writing creatively for the past 3 years, but I haven't had the chance to have an audience. As a self-taught student, I find it extremely hard to get any attention for my writings. (I hope some of you can sympathize with me.)

I have had two creative weblogs on the internet, the subtle pen being the first (from 2003 to 2006), and I, Revolutionary! being the second (from 2006 to present).

the subtle pen was where I really began to write. I learned who I was as a human and a lover, and I also learned about the way the mind (my mind) really works. From a teen’s standpoint, the subtle pen is a chronicle of love and angst, and from an adult’s standpoint, the subtle pen is an introspective look into the teenage psyche. I recommend starting with that weblog.

I, Revolutionary! is an extension of the subtle pen in form only: It is much more mature and focused. I started it early 2006, right around my 20th birthday, so it not only marked a significant point in my life as a grow child, but a significant point in my development as a writer and an individual. The low post count is due to two things—school and writer’s block. Since out of school, I have been writing more often (usually every few days), and I am focusing more on fiction and where my imagination can lead me and my readers. Once you’ve gotten a feel for my style, I, Revolutionary! would be a good place to start reading.

So there it is, everything I’ve written. I’m giving it to you, fellow writers, to take it and do what you will. I would love feedback, but after three years, I’ve found that it is a lot harder to find good feedback than it is to spill yourself out onto (digital) paper. Comment criticize, or leave it lay. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Good morning. I know this is not the right place for this (well... maybe it is :-)) I wanted to introduce myself in the correct forum, but the "post new" button in the introduction forum does not seem to be highlighted on my computer. Am I doing something wrong? I'm a blonde, so it wouldn't be surprising if it is some form of operator error. LoL. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Judy,

I'm not sure why the post new button didn't work for you but you can always find a topic that would apply to your message (like this one!) and hit the reply button to post.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi everyone. My name is Laura Kathryn. I am 26 years old. I live in Columbus ,Georgia, USA. I am in college, and work at a doctors office. I have been taking career aptitude tests for days now, because I suddenly have pressure to figure out what I want to do with my life. I have been writing poetry since I was 6 years old. IT is my love. My dream is to publish an anthology of poetry and an autobiography. I go to poetry slams in Atlanta as often as possible, and book readings at the decatur book festival, and I just know that I could do that. I would love to get to know any of you, especially people in driving distance that I could meet in person at a poetry reading or book reading. Someone who would like to get coffee or smoothies and bond over words! Spoken, written...anywords...haha. I have friends ( of course) But I desire friends who cultivate dreams and goals in my realm of aspiration. If your interested, please feel free to contact me ( lkttidwell@gmail.com). Also, I posted a thread in the poetry section about making a career out of writing? Please, if you have minute, and some advice, scoot over there and pass it on. I hope to hear from y'all soon.

Hi Laura. It's great to see someone with so much enthusiasm. A suggestion that I would make would be to join a writer's group in your area. If you can't find one, why not start one yourself? It's a great way to get feedback, make friends, and connect with people who have similar interests. In my case, after I moved to Vermont, I saw ads in 1991 about two writer's groups that were forming. I joined both of them and the two of them are still growing strong today.
As far as the autobiography goes, why not just pick a discreet area of interest in your life and write a memoir about that? When you are old and gray and nodding by the fire you can write a more comprehensive story.

Hi there everybody,
I just joined SpeakEasy and thought I'd say hello. Hello!
I've been too apathetic to send anything out lately--well, uh, make that about 5 years now, LOL--but a friend having just received a PEN award for a book of poetry and another friend having her second novel accepted for publication is all conspiring to kick my butt. So I thought I'd get back into the swing of things, and here I am, sniffing around for publishing opportunities.
I'm also seriously considering a low-residency MFA. One friend went to Goddard, the other to Vermont College, and both had high praise for their schools. If anybody knows of a good source for information on these and other MFA programs, I'd be grateful. I know there are guidebooks out, but reviews of these guides are mixed at best, and I'd prefer the give and take of a forum.
Thanks for whatever you can tell me.
Cheers,
Lisa

You've probably already found the section on MFA programs, and the topic under there about Low-Residency programs. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only Goddard person here, and I know for sure there are a number of VC people.

And welcome!

Hello? hello? Is this thing on?
Anyway, I'm a newbie to the P&W's forums and also to very much else in my life. I've been writing off and on for about 25 years (yeah, I'm that old), but I feel like a newbie to the craft. My problem is I have a lot of psychological issues, which I'm working on, I've got my best people working on it, but I have always been plagued with various insecurities, paranoia, and general pessimism.
Oh, and by the way, I really don't like people. I know this probably bodes poorly for trying to be a writer, but I think things like the internet and forums like this are perrrrfect for folks like me.
As the song goes, "Enjoy yourself, its later than you think!" So I know I have to get it together, open my shell a crack, and try to do it for real. You people aren't really out to get me, are you?

Hi, I'm Cee-- I've been lurking for a bit and thought I'd pop in to say hello. I just graduated from the U of Utah with a degree in English, and I'm going to be entering their fiction MFA program in the fall. In the past few years I've focused on short stories, but I'm trying to get a novel-length manuscript finished in this time off school. I am a self-professed lit geek, and I have a few fannish pursuits that fill up my time otherwise. xD I've been watching things with avid interest and am glad that I've found a forum like this one!

Yes! I love you. The Whedonverse is the only thing that turns my adult self into an exclamatory dorkus. Although I think you've got the order wrong -- it's Buffy first, followed by Firefly. As soon as my essay on homosociality and the Watcher's Council's done, I'm off to that yearly scholarly conference. Because then my love is legitimate.

Ahem. See you on the boards!

Hmm? What? Did someone say geek?

Seriously, though, Joss Whedon writes the best dialog, even when he's making up the vocabulary. Personally, I'd say the order is more like Firefly, then Buffy, but that's just me. If your guilty pleasures extend to comics/graphic novels, by the way, Buffy Season Eight is great.

Hi Zach,
Welcome to Poets and Writers. As a fellow self-taught writer, I recommend finding a good writing group with writers that you admire, so that you can get educated feedback on your work. This isn't a critique site but no doubt you will learn a lot about writing and publishing in general. Again, welcome.

A Formal Introduction [In reply to] Can't Post

I fell into this forum last week while awaiting notification of the decision on my 2008 application to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. I had expressed some anxiety in my blog about my chances this year (http://www.silkentent.com/Trees/?p=325). That piece was getting a lot of hits as anxiety built in others (the notification letters went out according to an unusual schedule this year). I followed a link in a Google search that had led some readers to my site, and joined the conversation. I really like this spot, and hope to participate for a while.

I am a fiction writer and essayist living in central Pennsylvania. I used to say "with my husband and daughter," but my daughter graduated from college last month and is now living permanently in her university town (about 40 miles from where I live). She has taken a job in that region in a lab (she has a degree in biology). I go to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont every August (a fact of my life that has caused some consternation on the board I originally hopped on to). This is the first year that I do not have to be back right afterward to start attending my daughter's college field hockey games. "Roll with the Changes" will be the theme of my summer.

I am 61 years old. I taught secondary school English (primarily American literature and composition to eleventh graders) for thirty years. I have been writing fiction more and more seriously since 1989. I have had an online journal/blog since 1999.

I am happy to be here.

Hi everyone,

I have posted a few times but never introduced myself. My name is David and I am a recent graduate of Florida State with a degree in English/Creative Writing. I discovered this site about six months ago along with discovering Tom Kealey's blog, and I've been addicted to it ever since. I would like to apply to MFA programs, but decided this summer to wait until winter '09 (for various reasons covered here). I have really enjoyed my time here at FSU and got to work with some great teachers, but I'd like to relocate to somewhere above the Mason-Dixon line for Grad School. Not a big fan of the south. I'm a fiction writer, and will be taking a workshop this Fall with FSU's director Mark Winegardner to help polish my writing samples and perhaps even generate some fresh ideas. Some of my favorite writers are Jorge Luis Borges, Lorrie Moore, Salman Rushdie, and Robert Hemingway. If anybody has questions about FSU's program (thought I only have undergrad experience there I am very familiar with the grad stuff. I have taken several cross-listed courses with grad students and we share faculty) feel free to PM me.

Hello, Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Katelynn. I love to write but have not even attempted to have anything published. I have won a contest for American Poet of the year 2007, although poetry is not my favorite. In fact it's hard for me to write unless I'm in the mood and thats not very often. I decided to attempt to have a first book published but am sure it will take at least a year to finish as you all know best if not better then I. I have had people tell me I should write more poetry but call me silly, I just rather work on something I enjoy. I may throw out more poetry now and then we'll see. I will be reading the threads from time to time but since time is limited, it won't be as often as I would like. I feel fortunate to type this at the moment.

Hello friends,

My name is Tory. I am a poet (in training) currently embroiled in the much glamorized, but realistically stressful, MFA application process. I live in LA, and desperately, desperately, desire to vacate and acquaint myself with a part of the country that cares a little less about Paris Hilton. Just "leave Britney alone!"

My favorite contemporary poets include Henri Cole, Charles Wright, W.S. Merwin, Frederick Seidel, Matthea Harvey, Li-Young Lee, Susan Wheeler, Natasha Tretheway, Ben Lerner and Lucie Brock-Broido. Other favorites include Sylvia Plath, Wallace Stevens, May Swenson, Frank O'Hara James Merrill, e.e. cummings, Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, James Wright, Allen Ginsberg, Gertrude Stein, and John Berryman.

I'm glad to be here!

Hello, name's Michael. I'm a new writer in the block with a taste for form poetry, a love of creative nonfiction, and with a bit of dabbling into fiction. However, all of my works are of either personal value or of usually unaccepted topics, it seems. I run into problems with finding my right target audience, but I've been urged by my english teachers and my now creative writing professors to move in some direction towards being published. If anyone has any tips on finding the right publication for your target audience, I'd love it if I could get some advice.

Great to be on. ^_^

I'm a fiction writer, student editor, 32 yrs old, and have just sent off my applications to six MFA programs. It's my first time applying, and I'm excited to see what happens. This winter is the first time I am sending work out for publication.

Best of luck to all the writers out there! I look forward to your posts.

I have not contributed for a while. I am listed as a non fiction writer and poet. Now I have a new book: Sophia's Lost and Found: Poems of Above and Below. Sophia has
been known to people since ancient days and she (wisdom) is needed now as never before.

My non fiction book is The Dynamic Great Lakes. It is a green book about changes in the Great Lakes through nature and the hand of man.

My first book of poetry was The Wilderness Within. It includes a couple of essays, but both the poems and the essays are drawn from wild places.

Greetings and salutations to all writers and poets of the speakeasy! My name is Jason D. Wilkins and I write poetry. I am a 33 year old husband and father of five. I work as a firefighter and am an ordained minister as well. I have been in love with poetry since I first saw Dead Poet's Society in high school. It was then that my cousin, Rich, and I developed the form of poetry known as Rictameter. (so named for he) I have never published any of my work, but have as of late become more open to the idea and better prepared to deal with the initial rejections. There have been many authors who have published using the rictameter form, and I feel it is only fitting that I myself publish my own work as well as the full history behind the form. I hope to meet many talented new friends here and am so looking forward to interacting with you all.

Peace and Love,

Hello,
My name is Andrea, I am 25 and I write fiction. I am a recent college graduate, with a BA in Sociology, with double majors in English and Psychology. I am very proud of finally finishing school because it was a very long and arduous struggle, and at times it felt like it would never end.
I've been writing for as long as I could remember. I've always kept journals because I felt like I had something to say but no one to say it to, so I wrote it down.
I would like meet likewise people and become a better writer as I go along.

You might have better luck asking about those programs in the MFA threads, but I trust you've already found those.

You can't start a new discussion in the MFA area. Reply to one of the existing ones and you should be all right.

Pongo, do you know why you can't start a new post in the MFA area? There are schools to which I applied that do not have blogs. I don't want to start talking about those schools in another school's area and I can't throw my questions/comments into the accepted or rejected folders yet. Any direction or insight would help. I'll ask over there too.

Khalilah, because the MFA forum is so busy and there are so many ongoing conversations, the number of topics is limited so that information can be easily found and therefore be useful to the largest number of patrons.

You can post your question in Choosing an MFA Program or even in Application Time! Either one of those threads would be a good one to start.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hi! I am totally new to this forum and to the entire Poets & Writers website. I am a middle-aged woman who has been dabbling in writing for some time now. Most of my life up to now has been spent as a singer of classical music (mostly opera). But the urge to write has been hitting me like a steady stream of electricity in the last couple of years, and I am finally taking the steps to give in to it full-time and just let it flow. And I apologize for the bad simile. :D

Aside from a couple of articles in a magazine for classical singers and a couple of online articles on a website, I have not published anything of consequence -- YET. ;)

I love writing essays and short stories and I love being funny. Writers like James Thurber, Robert Benchley, Garrison Keillor and Erma Bombeck are my idols. Yes, I include Erma Bombeck in that exalted circle. I'm not there yet myself, though. I have a long way to go.

I plan to do a lot of lurking on this forum in the beginning because right now I don't know what I am doing. Hopefully at some point I will be able to become a productive member of this writers' society.

Hey All,

I've been poking around the Speakeasy for a while, but just noticed this thread. Figured I'd put it to use. Other than furtively lurking around the P&W Web site, I write fiction and work as a freelance finance writer (boring but paying). I've published a few stories in lit journals (CrossConnect, Waccamaw, Shenandoah forthcoming), and I'm headed to the Iowa Writers' Workshop next year. You guys on the forum have been great--there's so much valuable info on here--and I'm looking forward to meeting some folks and helping out where I can.

Hello everyone,

I am JB and I live in Woodstock, GA. I am 25 years old. I am currently in college studying English. I mostly write poetry, but have taken on the challenge of writing a book. I am timid about people reading my work so I haven't been published as many times as most of you on here, but I am still young and hope to become less timid about my work. I don't have many friends seeing how I am not a big fan of people but that could be due to my social anxiety, who knows. So I have decided to join this forum to surround myself with others who I can probably relate to a bit better or something like that.

Bye.

If an editor gives you criticism, it means they liked your work enough to take the trouble to reply personally, so it's actually a compliment (though it doesn't always feel that way). In any case most of the time you just get a form response as David points out. Good luck!

Hey JB. Welcome. We haven't all published so don't worry about that. I've done the social anxiety thing. It can be conquered. Frankly, it never affected me in workshops because I didn't see that as a social gathering, but as academics or work. Those things I could handle. Maybe if you put it in that light, you won't feel so anxious. Then again I teach English, not psychology, so keep a can of Morton's on standby.

Hi,
I like to write fiction; I wrote a little novel that was set in San Francisco about a taxi driver, which in fact was published. I think it would make a good movie, but I don't want to write a screenplay. Anyway, I also wrote a first person piece about Parkinson's Disease; it's about 2200 words, not heavy or depressing, and if anyone has an idea of a place to send it, you could let me know. Thank you.

Re: [motet] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

hello everyone,

I guess I have tried to write for about as long as I could write-no, that is not an attempt at profundity-some detours along the way such as being dyslexic probably inspired me to try harder. Before computer days, yes there was indeed such a time, every few years I would take the assembled typed/handwritten pages and sometimes tear them up but most often burn them. Not as an attempt for the words to rise as prayers on the smoke, no, I either didn't like what I had written or just didn't want it anymore. Then with computers, I signed up for d-x, the online journal, and all was well, I could write, get feedback--mostly good, rarely threatening--- and I could always delete if I felt like it, and have what I wrote look good, if for no other reason for the layout of the pages it was written on. Then lo and behold, d-x decided to shut down--so now I have one file with five years of entries, one day at a time that could be deciphered. No thank you, if I haven't saved it somewhere else, then d-x deleted it for me. But writing has become more of a habit, mostly poetry, and I have some things published on P&W magazines. I am lucky enough to have been invited by Shirley Allard to become involved with WordCatalystMagazine, an excellent ezine, as a mostly monthly columnist, which means if I can get an acceptable column written in time for the publication date. This is proving to be interesting because I started out trying to write short prose and it always managed to morph into freestyle poetry. I guess a column can be be poetry, we'll see. If I didn't have a regular income (so far), I guess I could qualify to be a starving poet, having in the last 4-5 years won a grand total on $100 in a poetry contest at a community college--that prize coming as a gift certificate from Staples. I have had some nice e-mail conversations with editors of magazines after rejects--all have been friendly---well I guess that friendly has been a sliding scale of friendly. The hardest one came from an individual who said in so many words--and this was a prose submission---that he liked the first paragraph and it went downhill from there--that he didn't like parts of the work because they did this. that, and the other----well, this, that, and the other was what I intended for it to do. Life goes on. Take care.-will-

Of course real life gets in the way with work, family, etc. I have been writing for
about ten years. It started as a therapeutic exercise and grew from there. I am hoping ultimately to help other women from my experiences and also inject some humor into the hum drum lifestyle some human beings lead.
Have gotten lots of rejections from journals and magazines, so I guess some editors would rather remain hum drum.

I'm actually here to help out my fianc who is going to be applying for MFA programs this year. I've taken on the task of researching all the programs and helping him pick the best ones. I'll also be helping him coordinate, collect and send out the applications. In the last week I've looked at the website for 100+ programs... some of them have become like old friends I've visited them so much!

I love researching and I'm happy to help anyone here who'd like some direction finding a suitable program... in exchange maybe you can help me find my fianc his dream schools! Anyway, looking forward to getting to know everyone.

(Oh, and for the curious, my life's passion is history. I love books as well, especially big thick reference books and dense encyclopedias. I like cute things, riding my bicycle, wearing skirts, and knee socks. I also like toast!)

Hi everybody,

I've been a lurker for a few months, but I figured it would be polite to give a hello before I start posting.

I've always enjoyed reading, but writing started as a hobby for me a few years ago. I have an environmental science background but these days I'm working as a technical editor, a gig I happily fell into. This year I thought long and hard about my career aspirations and discovered I cared a lot more about writing than I did about my previous work in the sciences.

I plan on applying for MFA programs once the application process stops scaring the hell out of me. I feel like I still have some reading and a lot more writing to do so until then, I'm looking forward to learning from you all.

Hi, everyone! I'm a novelist with two published novels (most recently, The Wednesday Sisters, a national bestseller about a writing group, the struggle to get published, and the importance of reaching for our dreams - among other things). I'm currently writing a third novel under contract with Random House/Ballantine. I've published short stories and essays in numerous magazines, including commercial magazines like Writer's Digest and Runner's World, and literary magazines like The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Literary Review, etc. I also host a blog on which a wide range of writers post about writing and getting into print: 1st Books: Stories of How Writers Get Started. It's very much about how much rejection even the best writers endure on their way to getting published, and I hope will inspire people struggling to get into print to keep at it.

About the time I sold my first novel, I joined an online forum called Readerville, where there was a very supportive group of participating writers. Sadly, it hasn't survived. I'm hoping to find the same kind of supportive environment here that I had there.

I hope I am doing this right - not posting in the wrong forum or something. I already spent about ten minutes running through all the names and passwords I'd ever used until I remembered the one I used to register here.
I have been writing since I can remember. I write fiction, pretty much, but I also like the essay format. I have two new year's resolutions: 1. I want to write humor and do a good job. I love Garrison Keillor, Dave Barry, the late, great, Lewis Grizzard, the late, great Peg Bracken, Judith Viorst, Nick Hornby, Gene Weingarten, and of course, the best of the best -- Mark Twain.
2. My second resolution is to write well on my blog: contrarymaryclementine.blogspot.com
Mary Clementine was my grandmother's name - and she was a very contrary lady. I mean that as a compliment. She did not suffer fools, and she believed in doing things HER way. Happy New Year to all of you.

Hi. I'm not a newbie writer or anything, just one that had stayed in the closet for some time and is now emerging. I was always a DIY writer, but am going for the whole shebang and going forth with my MFA. With that said, I enjoy poetry, my first taste of the literary fruit, but am bound to try and make my living off of fiction and perhaps a memoir. I'm here to connect. I've connected to fabulous writers, who are NOT school educated, on Twitter and I love the camaraderie of people who devour the written word. Quirky and self-abusive? Aren't all writers? I'd like to meet some writers from the Pittsburgh area (though I don't live there now, shortly I will be attending the University) so we can chat and perhaps hook up for coffee or something. With that said, I'll be checking in on this between work, school, twitter, my blogs, WD Writer's Community and various workshop sites.

Nice to meetcha!

Hi. I'm a lawyer for my day job. Realizing more and more that I enjoy creative writing more than being in the midst of conflict all the time. Today I had a very emotionally draining day trying to defend someone in a restraining order hearing. I've been dealing with a difficult estate. I'm stressed out all the time. I attend a monthly poetry group and workshop which is fantastic. I wish I could get an MFA and teach and leave the practice of law behind. I haven't had a lot of time or money to send work out. Anyway, I'll check back here. Would like to communicate with more writing friends.

hello everyone, i'm the new guy! name's randall. i'm a very stand-offish (is that hyphen appropriate?) person, who has recently become interested in communicating with others who share a love of writing. i had an extremely brutal childhood, and my only form of escape was reading. now i realize a lot of people found thier inspiration in reading more memorable, and even powerful novels and poems, however my first book was The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks. now, i don't want to discredit mr. Brooks, but for an 11 year old misfit, the idea of an ability such as magical song was awesome! then i read The Hobbit, along with Dune and (oddly enough) The Doors of His Face, The Lamps of His Mouth, and Other Stories. now in that last book i read, there is some interesting poetry, and i was sort of inspired to try writing some of my own. i immersed myself in reading novels and writing poetry. i have shared my poetry with a few people, but they didn't get it, so i haven't shown it to anyone since. i'd like to share some with the literary world but don't know what to do or what risks there may be, so here i am. if anyone has advice, please give. but mostly i just want to share thoughts and make friends.

I brought a star
down with a wish,
and was rewarded with a kiss
for my confusion.
But for ecstacy is all I cared;
so now I truly seek to share
this gift with all the world.

Re: [pongo] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

I guess since I've been posting regularly for the last few days, I should introduce myself.

I'm Jim Ryals and I moved from the Los Angeles area to Louisiana almost three years ago when my wife got an offer she couldn't refuse ("except that it's in New Orleans, dear"). Because of the combination of her salary and the unbelievably low cost of living here compared with California (plus the fact that we sold our house two weeks before the jumbo mortgage market cratered), we decided that I would cease my own law practice of twenty years to focus on my writing and taking care of our kids rather than continue to raise them by surrogate.

It took a year or so, but I started writing seriously in 2009, got into grad school last fall, and discovered the wonderful world of rejection letters in December of last year.

Since December 18, I've received 57 rejections and 2 acceptances. My first short story will come out online in Underground Voices next month and also in the print edition at the end of the year. Another short story of mine will come out in this year's edition of descant. Since these are the only two stories I've submitted, with any seriousness (I have four others that I'm dabbling with but which have helped the rejection count), I'm pretty pleased.

Because I had no idea how competitive it was and because it was fairly close to home, I applied to the Sewanee Writers' Conference for this summer. Ignorance is bliss, because had I known I might not have applied. I haven't been rejected yet, so fingers crossed.

That's it for now, other than to say that from my conversations here so far, this seems to be a pretty supportive and impressive group. A great combination.

Welcome, Jim!

Since there is no application fee for Sewanee (nor for Bread Loaf), you aren't risking anything but disappointment by applying. (At least that's how I see it.) This was my first year applying to Sewanee, and I got wait listed. When did you apply? From what I gather, you hear in six weeks, up or maybe. I know only about one outright rejection, and that person announced it on March 18. I don't know when that person applied.

Congratulations on your upcoming publications. That's a 2% acceptance rate. That's better than I am doing, batting zero right now.

Hi All,

I'm May, a 50-something Japanese American from Hawaii. Currently live in Maryland with my husband and our sailboat, Closinuf. Before MD I lived in NJ (Rutgers -- Douglass College, BA Microbiology with minor in Genetics), Egypt, and southern CA (Newport Beach).

Started writing six years ago and have two drafts of novels and three partials rotting in files. Made my first submission to a local journal last year, which was accepted and published. I've taken ump-teen courses at Gotham Writers Workshop and want to do an MFA but must first convince a certain engineer it would be worth the time and money.

Joined a poetry group in January, wrote a poem each day in April for National Poetry Month. The unbelievable happened in June -- an editor pulled the pages out of my hands at a poetry reading and said she wanted to publish the poem.

Attended The Gettysburg Review Conference for Writers last month, a wonderful fiction workshop with Lee K. Abbott.

Looking forward to interacting with all 'yall at Poets and Writers.

Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello, everyone.

My name is Jackie and I am a writer.

A brief autobiography: As a youngster, I always loved the written word. I constantly wrote poems, songs, stories, etc. and I received accolades. In my 20s, I wrote professionally in many fields, such as marketing communications, journalism and PR, and I "dabbled" in creative writing on the side. I decided to get "serious" about writing and I entered creative writing classes with limited success. (Limited by my own fear, but that is a different discussion). Then, life happened. I got sidetracked (willingly) with other professional ventures that I thought I needed to pursue and the writing stopped all together. That was in 1995.

Flash-forward now: I am a "Jackie" a bit older, a tiny bit jaded and bored professionally. I cleaned out my closet the other day and stumbled across a novel that I had started back in 1993. I dusted it off and let it sit on my desk a few days. I decided to pick it up last Sunday and asked my husband if he wanted to hear something funny.

He listened. No noise, no sound, no comment. After 30 pages, I was done. He looked at me and said, "Why didn't you tell me you are a writer?" There was no way to answer that question that would not involve a 3-day conversation, so I didn't answer him. He encouraged me to pick it back up again.

So, here I am, desperately needing a place with "like-minded" people to help me navigate back to the creative places in my soul that have been dormant for so, so long. I would like to try to finish my novel. I have no huge illusions or dreams of making it "big" some day (Ok, well, maybe I do.) When I am finished, if I decide my novel is crap and needs to go back in the closet to be unearthed again after my demise, that is ok, too. I, at least, finished it.

Thanks for reading and please say "hello!"

Best,
--Jackie

Hi I'm Agatha and new to online writing sites. But I thought I would try this one. I've been writing poetry for about 12 years and would like some exposure and feedback from other writers. I write about the inner world, mostly, thoughts and feelings rather than what I view outside my window. I think I write to frame what I feel in some kind of concrete way, not so much to offer a reason I feel this way to others, but more as an attempt to put into words that which is unexplainable to myself in any other way. Poetry provides this venue for me. Poetry also, I think, allows me to remain hidden behind the words as so often poetry is to the reader a different experience than to the writer. So hello. I look forward to meeting some of you.

Hello everyone!

I think I'll introduce myself too :)

I've been 'lurking' a bit on these boards the past week or so, not really sure how/if to jump into conversations.

My name's Katie, I'm an MFA student and I'm currently in the thesis stage. Its so stressful. I think I'll use the speakeasy as a reason to procrastinate. I'm young (23!) and have lots and lots to learn about this whole biz, and honestly sometimes I feel very lost. I've recently published my first chapbook, and I'm trying to build up a decent CV in hopes of one day getting a 'real job' :-p I know that I have so much to learn, and I'm grateful that the speakeasy exists as a forumn for poets/writers to well... speak easy. LoL.

Oh, check out my blog if you have a chance. It's about my journey from MFA student to graduate, and tracks my successes and (many) failures. http://www.katiehoerth.blogspot.com It's definately not all professional or anything, its more just a record of my personal journey so that I can look back and see how far I've come.

Yes! UTPA = University of Texas Pan American

We are very small and just starting our MFA program. Our first graduating class just finished up this past December! I
was part of the first cohert of students admitted in 2007, but I kind of fell behind everyone else. I'll be graduating this May, God willing.

The program focuses on literary translation and border writing, which is perfect because our university is just a little hop from Mexico. Its a wonderful program, but of course its going through some growing pains. Most of our students are nontraditional, in that they work, have family obligations, ect aside from being an MFA student. I think the best thing about our program, though, is the community we've forged. UTPA is located in Edinburg, Texas, which isn't exactly a big city (nearest 'big city' is San Antonio which is at least four hours away driving!), so there wasn't much of a thriving art scene here. But its growing so much! Now we have poetry nights at local coffee houses, a wonderful poetry festival, and we even have a community service project associated with our program for juvenile detention centers. Our area is one of the poorest in the entire nation, which I think gives our writers a very unique voice. (oh, and tuition is uber cheap!)

Right now, I think our program rated at the very bottom of the MFA list - but we're so new! So it is understandable. I'm a big UTPA fan... lol... in case you can't tell. I did my undergrad here and now I work here too in academic advising. Its the kind of place where everyone knows everyone... even though the whole university has like 20,000 students. Its so homey and I can't imagine living anywhere but here, but alas - I think once I finish my MFA I will have outgrown this place. I'm currently on the lookout for PhD programs, but that's a bit of a step away.

Did I miss anything? Let me know if I did : )

Re: Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

My name is Maria and I have already joined in some forums, so I guess it's time to introduce myself!

This will be brief because it's past my bed time and it seems I can't get myself to bed. I have been trying to get myself on the page before my day job/career - which means getting up at 5 AM. I did well for a few weeks, well, then summer proceeded and I had friends over and some fun. Now it's hard to get back once you've strayed away.

I work the standard 9-5 hours unless there is a crisis. Weekends are when I write. I have invested my life in my career in my profession as a social worker. I have been fitting in as much as I can with the creative writing. I write poetry and have begun to write some short stories - I finished two for the first time in my live just a couple of months ago! I mean, first time, ever! I wish I had people to share the deep joy I felt in those moments. You see, it's a big deal to me: I have a BA in psychology and a Master's in social work. No Lit background whatsoever, so I have no foundation apart from what I read, which never feels enough (fiction). On real life, however, well, there's a lot I have seen, read, lived on that.

That's me in a nutshell. I will be going in and out of forums, hope to see you there. Oh, I've only been published once, ever - in a small chapbook anthology called Voices of Brooklyn. Published by an independent press called face2face press, which seemed to have disappeared. It does not make one feel good about their 'published' work. That was in 2001 anyhow. I've done a lot of spoken word/poetry readings since then. I have enjoyed that also. My focus now is how to get my work published.

Nice to know there is this space. Looking forward to reading what everyone has to say.
All the best,
M.

Hi, Everyone.

I have pretty varied listserv experience but this is my first forum just for writers. I'm a poet and graphic novelist with a huge crush on visual art. Like many here, I have an MFA and the name of the Ivy League school it's from has opened more than a few doors to employment, though the job I'm hired for is almost never the job I create, once I'm there. I'm a writer of Web articles now, and leap from topic to topic as if I know where I'm about to land. I have a fair amount of fine arts publications and awards and if you sweep them together they make quite a nice pile -- to sleep in or burn, I haven't decided. It's loud now, with construction a few stories down, and my co-workers have gone to lunch. I've been reading the posts in different threads and can't wait to see whose icon and name begins to feel familiar as their voice emerges in a consistent way. I'd like to eventually be part of some live poetry or cartooning group in NYC -- it's been too long since I've done that -- but this feels like a good way to start dialogue, too. God, now the clanging of some huge metal thing is making the honking cabs seem diminutive and sweet. I have to get back to work, writing a video script -- I just sent an article on Czeslaw Milosz's death to our Polish videographer, who is the only person here who would know the name or care. Not counting the hundreds on this list -- which is another reason why I'm here.

Have a great day.

Okay, now I feel like a moron -- my Polish friend at work tells me Milosz died over five years ago -- note to self, check the date on the PDF -- my bad. A humbled Scout.

In Reply To
I just sent an article on Czeslaw Milosz's death to our Polish videographer, who is the only person here who would know the name or care. Not counting the hundreds on this list -- which is another reason why I'm here.

Hello everyone. I'm a 21 year old college student, and the fact that I'm still academically eligible with my current grades is pretty remarkable, makes me wonder if the school cares about anything other than my tuition payments - I think I already know the answer to that question though.

Outside of my dreadful school experience I'm a pretty simple kid - that's another way of saying I'm very lazy - if I could sit on the couch all day and write, then go play video games at night - that rhymed, see, I'm a poet - I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'll probably be one of those basement bums leeching off their parents well into their 40's, but hey, I'm an only child, what else could you expect?

Anywho, good luck to all of you aspiring writers like myself, seeya around the site.

Hello, I'm Rowan. Have posted a couple of times here before introducing myself...I hope that wasn't rude of me. I'm generally shy of talking to strangers on the internet, but it's nice to see a community of writers interacting and I'm glad to be a part of it! I currently live in New Orleans and write fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Hi everyone! I just bought my first issues of Poets & Writers last night and am looking forward to reading them. I'm excited to have found these boards, as well.

My name is Brianna and I currently live in Las Vegas. It's not as glamorous as it sounds and I definitely don't love it, but I'm making the most of my situation.

As for my writing life, I freelance for a local monthly and am in the midst of editing my first novel (which I wrote during NaNoWriMo '10). I also write short stories and can be found blogging at girlseeksplace.wordpress.com. I hope you'll check out my blog and tell me what you think.

When I'm not writing, I can be found with my nose in a book or working on a craft project (I scrapbook and embroider). I'm excited to dig around the boards and get to know everyone. Happy Saturday!

Re: [rppohl] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi I'm a new member. As far as writing goes it does travel way back to a time when I was little about 6 or 7. Little stories of a few sentences at that time; none of which was kept. As I grew older I continued to write however life's circumstances have caused them to be no more. About the time I married in 1972 there was an awakening and when our child was born I wrote a piece of poetic prose for my husband and called it ' A Single Rose' and then when our child was 2yrs of age I wrote another piece called 'Conception' and it wasn't till the 1980's that I began to write again and quite a lot. There was another lull and than in the 90's some and then in this decade flowing faster to a collection of about 34 and counting.

My work is copyrighted and under a title. Just now need to publish. When I first sent out the application to copyright one would have thought that I looked like I was beginning the process of giving a part of myself away.

As I write this my hands are shaking over the keys. Guess I'm a tad nervous.

I do look forward to the journey ahead and communicating and sharing with you along our shared journeys.

Take Care and Be Well,

Ciao, Oceandale

Howdy. I already posted a separate, brief intro message back on the 29th--" hearty salutations"--and then just now noticed this more generic, sticky thread. Okay, I won't bother you with the same stuff posted on my earlier intro. Just thought "all the action" is over here, perhaps (so to speak)? This site sure seems pretty quiet, all things considered, no? I feel as though I should be yelling, in order to wake everyone up!

We have our rhythms. Sometimes it's slow for a while, and then it livens up. I don't see anything wrong with that.

If you want to jazz it up, instead of yelling, post a comment that we will all want to comment on (rather than argue with). We prefer discussion to shouting.

You can if you use a valid URL. You tried to use:

Code
gforum.cgi/?post=302128;sb=post_latest_reply....

as opposed to:

Code
www.pw.org/speakeasy/gforum.cgi/?post=302128;sb=post_latest_reply....

The easiest way to grab a link to a specific post (and its thread) is to get it from the link that reads "Shortcut" in the box where the post information is.

Hello, everyone. My name's Celena. I just started this creative writing about 2 months ago and am enjoying myself sooo much. I have been more into formal letter writing in the past. But, I'm a single mom of 6 kids and they are what I typically write about. Because it's crazy stuff! I would love to find out how to post some of my "poetry" and get the chance to find out what people think and get some critique.

Writing helps me deal with everything. Seeing your life in writing, and an honest look at your feelings...well, there's no better therapy!

Thank you for having me!

Hi, all.

I'm definitely new to the Speakeasy and am still finding my way. I'm a early thirties-ish new mom who's been telling stories and lies since I could talk. I earned a BA in English and Speech & Communications Studies, a MA in English, and I'm about to embark on the MFA in Writing adventure. I've been accepted to several schools and am trying to decide, which is a wonderful and frustrating thing.

I've been a lifeguard, backpacking guide and newspaper reporter. Currently I teach English as an adjunct instructor at a small, liberal arts college in N.C. My creative work has appeared in South Loop Review, the Santa Fe Writer's Project, Wilderness House Literary Review, and regional magazines and newspapers. I've written an historical novel and was able to acquire an agent, though he hasn't found a publisher (and it's been a few years). I've thoroughly enjoyed writing residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Montana Artists Refuge, and I'd love to do more... though with a toddler, my writer's life has certainly changed.

I'm hopeful about being a writer, and I've got a lot to learn.

My best to all of you,

KSC

I could use some help with the basics, such as how to post in the right places, how to reply to groups and individuals, and anything else useful I might need to know. Is there a place with the basic instructions on this website?

Thanks for this forum, and I look forward to connecting with all of you!

A greeting from Seattle where it remains, this week, in the middlefifties, though it is almost July! Thus, for this SpeakEasy forum, I am calling myself RainWriter. I am a writer of literary fiction with several stories in the literary journals, and a lovely writing award from Carolina Quarterly in 2003. But I am here, browsing this site, to discover what a selfpublished author might do with two beautiful works.

I have two semiautobiographical novels up on lulu.com regarding a Dutch immigrant childhood, but realize it will take forever to learn to market and promote them myself. I am curious about the selling of subsidiary rights for these kinds of works... Foreign rights, film rights, hardcover reprint rights. Tell me your stories if you have experience there! Cheers. Good words to you.=)

I have about a year to go and fully intend to start applying to LRMFA programs. I am a fiction writer - women's lit (not be confused with Chick lit).
I have been writing for years and am just now stepping out of the closet. Any advice is much appreciated.
I have too many questions to ask, but for starters: Good writing groups local or online? Advice for submissions to MFA programs? Contests?

Hi
My name is Chris Dunn and I'm from Northern Westchester (a NYC suburb).
My misadventures and idiosyncrasies can be viewed most easily by Googling my 'screen name', XPERDUNN.
I have a YouTube Channel by the same name.
I have a book of poetry (self-illustrated) posted (thru WordPress) as bearlybliss.com .
I write a bunch of essays, but I post them to my Facebook page. No one seemed to read my bloggings (www.seagrayblue.blogspot.com, et. al.) so I started posting as Notes on my Facebook profile. Some few people sometimes read my stuff there, which is a welcome change.

In a former life I wrote ad copy and copy-edited magazine articles and newsletters, illustrated an educational newsletter, and played computer-maven at a direct-marketing agency.

I love a sense of humor. But the subject is bifurcated: the humane thing to do is to encourage everyone to express themselves however they wish-- the practical thing to do is to discourage writers with no voice or talent. I hate being practical, but I recognize the same impulse that makes us create can often become, for some of us, a sharp blade. I do my judging based largely on the premise that I would not pass judgement by many others--and also on the fact that I haven't any authority over other peoples ideas.
Glad to be here

Yes, Cold Spring is just 15 minutes West of here, I'd guess. Greetings, fellow New Yawkah.
I love the idea of 'Difficult Listening'. As a young man, I listened to Igor Stravinsky's Ballet Suites--they seemed a complete cacophony to me, but I sensed that familiarity would help me 'get' it. Then, one day I found myself playing the music from "Fire Bird" in my head, and I realized that I wanted to get to a turntable right away, and listen and listen and listen. I've continued enjoying Stravinsky and used a similar embrace of the awkward-and-initially-unlovable to become a fan of the solo violin, Prokofiev, Franck, and others...
Many of my favorite 'Hard' SciFi writers are also the result of this approach: Ursula LeGuin, Greg Bear, Sherri Tepper, Connie Willis, and Ian Banks. Connie W. and Ian B., in particular, are the most densely written--but one's stick-to-it-ive-ness is amply rewarded.

Hello, I'm a novelist living in Toronto; I write literary fiction and I've published two novels, a short story collection, a novella and, some years back, two nonfiction works. I have a background in broadcast journalism, so I also podcast and read the work of other writers. I also review books on my blog. So I've had modest success, and have learned quite a lot about writing and publishing. However the scene's changing enough so that I'd really like to chat with some of you in mid-career who are running into various stumbling-blocks re: placing work. I hope I have time to visit often!

Re: [Carole G.] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, it's a whole different set of publishers, for one thing. While there are some Canadian publishers (the Harlequin group, most notably) that sell in the U.S. and attract a lot of U.S. submissions, most don't cross the border very effectively. And while major U.S. publishers often have subsidiaries or affiliates in Canada, they will rarely acquire books for the Canadian market (i.e., they'll sell U.S. books in Canada, but not publish Canadian books for sale only in Canada).

Many Canadian writers who sell decently in Canada are completely unknown in the U.S., which certainly implies some difference in taste or distribution (Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowat, Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, maybe Rohinton Mistry have had an impact in the U.S., but compare the influence in the other direction; and why isn't Robertson Davies considered a god in the U.S.?).

The radio show is roughly half an hour of reading from some novel (currently Edna Ferber's Show Boat), half an hour of music (probably Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes this Sunday) and then an hour of me reading poetry and saying whatever comes into my head.

When everything is working right, I archive the show on Ustream; otherwise, you have to catch it as it streams.

This is my first time joining any sort of writing community (online or not) but I've been writing (or trying to write, rather) fictional pieces/short stories for about 4 years. I'm sure you can all relate to that moment when you discover your true calling, and I've discovered mine. I've never been published, or even tried to be, but I'm starting to feel like I'm ready to at least head in that direction. I'm a little in over my head, so any advice is more than welcome. :)

I've written mostly short works, some scripts and scattered parts of novels, and I have been happily rejected by numerous publications (haha).

The main reason I signed up was to make connections with other writers, and to discuss ...well, writing.

Interesting about your mentor. I'm so glad there are schools like Empire, I joined the workforce at a young age and toyed with college for a while until I finally knuckled down. It's not too bad taking 16 credits there and having a full time position at a job like mine.

What up doe!

I am a 21 year old student going into my senior year of college. I have been writing seriously for about 3 years now and i have quickly found that poetry is a great medium to express myself, write about things that are hard to talk about and, gain knowledge about the world around me. I have been trained in the classics reading poets like Christopher Marlowe, John Donne, Shakespeare as well as other Renaissance poets. I also dig Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and my girl Nikki Giovanni to throw some names out their from the contemporary world. Now that I am going into my last year of college my dream is to get into a MFA program and continue my education in poetry which will hopefully lead to a job teaching kids the way that poetry can heal and help. I am finally glad to find a place to fully be myself and i am very excited to see what P&W's has to offer me. Please contact me if you have any advice (lbatiste@colby.edu) and thank you for your time!

Please continue to use words to blacken whiteness and express what the mind can only imagine!

Peace, Love and Soul,
Lestetr Batiste

Welcome, Michael. And a lot of us find it just as soothing (maybe more so) to stare blankly into the pages of a notebook while holding a fountain pen. It's more portable, and doesn't have the temptation of Angry Birds.

My browser made a line break after "laid." I thought, "shouldn't that go in Sweet Smell of Success?" Having just returned from a reading in a hall where the air conditioning wasn't working and the author was overcome by emotion during most of the 40-minute reading about returning a dead soldier's remains to his village, I needed the chuckle.

Good Evening! I'm new to P&W and I'm not sure I'm on a nickname basis with site because I'm new, but oh well.
I'm not quite sure what to type so here goes. My name is D and I have been writing poetry since I was in the 5th grade. It took me to recently graduate college and a push from a friend to encourage me to try and submit my poetry and participate.
Besides writing poetry I also write fairy tales, tall tales, and flash fiction. Also, I love poetry readings, performance poetry, and poetry slams. I just moved to the NYC Metro area and to tell you the truth starting from scratch sucks, but I'll endure.
Now, after putting my info on the table I'm glad to be here and if anyone knows how to survive with the only talent you have is writing, dancing, and a hard work ethic without any formal training please let me know. Thanks!

Hello, everybody! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi, folks! I'm brand new here!

I've been writing poetry, essays and short stories for my own pleasure as long as I can remember. I've done a lot of tech writing as part of various jobs I've had throughout the years (and, no offense to anyone, I never want to do it again!). I used to be editor-in-chief of a science fiction/fantasy fanzine back in the 1980's. I've done a ton of editing as part of various jobs, and I'm currently doing freelance editing. I also write music and play piano! I've put some links in my profile where you can go to hear some of my music and read some of my poetry and adventure anecdotes (I've had some good adventures...).

I'm really glad to be here, and I'm looking forward to all of it, ha! My plan is to extricate myself from types of work that I haven't been enjoying and get back into the creative arts that I love, particularly writing, editing & music.

Cheers! :D

SlickRhetoric [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello all, my name is Kat Star (not my full first name, but it is the name I go by professionally) and I am pretty new to the world of writing as work. I studied Creative Writing as my concentration of study at The New School and graduated in 2008, and since then have held a copy writer/editor job and a QA Tester job for a video game studio, where I had my first real publication when I created written content for the game the company put out which was called "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning". I write poetry and some short stories on the side right now and am preparing to begin my second QA job at a new studio in the area, though I am always on the lookout for writing and editing jobs.
Feel free to check out some of my work or find out a little more about me at my portfolio site: http://kat-star.com

Hi p&w people. My name is Dave and I'm 18 (younger than most). I'm a freshman at a university. I'm a genuinely happy guy and I've always loved to write from a young age though I had mediocre tendencies in high school. I've ran into many problems relative to the context of my surroundings growing up (a rich town). I started taking up writing as a hobby on the side in high school but never expressed that to anyone. In college, I'm doing great with my writing but I am humbled by how much I don't know. I am a student of life and I have stories to tell. I just want to write and you all seem like just the people to surround myself with. Writing is not just a hobby to me, but it helps me relax and rejuvenate.
Hope I can get to know some people and you can all get to take something from me.

Also, is there a place on here where I can ask for editors/ people to read my writing? I have a few pieces I'd like someone to look over before I send them with grad school applications.
Thanks, and happy writing.

I am a new writer and i am really exited i joined this forum. I don't know any writers and sometimes i feel lonely in all of this. Imiss the feeling that someone will understand my thoughts or concerns or even advice me about something.
P.S. Is this page just for writers around America? I hope not!

Welcome, Katerina. No, we have no rules about where you must be to participate here, as long as you can do it in English. (I suppose it would be all right to do it in Greek, but I don't know how many of us would be able to participate.)

Which OU is your school? Oxford University, Ohio University, Occidental, or another?

My name is Zach, I am a high school student with a number of interesting ideas and incomplete stories so far. I've been writing for as long as I could remember, but never really paid much attention to it until recently. I joined Speakeasy for some helpful advice and a great environment to meet and befriend others with the same interest in writing as me. I'm still not too sure about this whole experience, but yet again I tend to be cautious about things. I've got little to no credit to my name, but I am still young, and I have a lot of time to achieve the things I want to. That's all for now, and I hope to hear from some of you.

As a longtime member of about ten minutes, I decided it was time that I introduced myself. My user name is Cecil which doesn't reflect my real name in the least. I just always liked the name Cecil.

When I was growing up we lived in a little two bedroom trailer right outside of Savannah, Georgia. A place called Ogeechee Farms. The coolest kid in the neighborhood was a guy named Cecil. Typical bad boy. Drove a brand new Camaro and all the girls crazy. I wanted to be him so bad I couldn't stand it. That was 1968.

A scant 45 years later and I find myself medically retired and bored out of my mind. So, after cleaning out the closets and selling all my junk on ebay, cleaning the stove so well that I refuse to let anyone use it and seriously contemplate buying my third car of the past four months, my wife finally shoved me into my office and told me not to come out until I've written the great American novel.

So, where do I go from here?

First, is it Sessil or Seessil?

Second, welcome to the monkey house.

And third, you go down through the topics until you find something interesting. You go out to the five and dime -- you and I are old enough to remember five and dimes -- and buy a pad of paper and a cheap fountain pen and start filling up pages. After a while, you look at it and see where it's going and what it needs to get better.

(If you can't find a five and dime, go online and get a few pads of Rhodia paper -- it works well with fountain pen ink -- and buy a couple of cheap fountain pens on eBay.)
