Re: [Anurag] Postmark Deadline [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Anurag,
You might want to go to the www.driftless-house.blogspot.com . It's where people are keeping tracks of when programs first notify.

I hope this helps a little!

Max - thank you. It is a helpful site.

Arna - Probably it means I am not in! I can't believe they are sitting on my rejection letter and making me go on hoping.

Iowa Summer Program [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

I didn't apply to the MFA program at Iowa but I just found out I was accepted into their Summer Graduate Workshops. Is there anyone here who participated in this program who would like to share their thoughts on it?

Thanks!

Hi Nine,

Congratulations! Is that for the 3-week or the 8-week summer program?

Iowa MFA [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm getting ready to apply and I have a few things I'd like to know about what I'm getting into by applying (and potentially going) to Iowa. The biggest rumor that I've heard is that Iowa is catty/snarky and competitive based on funding. There seem to be two sides to this and both are either the extreme like of Iowa or an intense hatred. What's going on here? All these rumors don't seem up to date and I'm having a hard time discovering reputable sources that are current. On another note I was wondering how traditional the program is? One of my undergrad professors says it is experimental and another says it is traditional.

I have to admit that part of the reason I like Iowa is because of "ooh, shiny" i.e. its reputation. But before I knew just how great it was, what really pulled me towards it was two things: the sense of immersion not only in the program itself but in the city/culture of writing. The second is The Center of the Book, which I want to supplement my degree with and I haven't found a place to equal what Iowa is offering.

So, any thoughts?

Re: [decemberfinch] Iowa MFA [In reply to] Can't Post

decemberfinch,

The rumors about Iowa being a hyper-competive environment are just that: rumors. The truth is, Iowa may have been that way a long time ago, but it certainly hasn't been that way for many years--definitely not since the current director, Lan Samantha Chang, took over. My guess is that the source of those rumors are probably people who either went to Iowa a long time ago or know someone who went to Iowa a long time ago. I'm a graduate of the program myself, and I can assure you that youd be hard pressed to find a more supportive and inspiring writing environment/community in the country. As for fincancial aid, Iowa is fully funded now, so that shouldn't be a concern for you or any other applicant.

Hope this helps.

So much! Most of the rumors dealt with Sandra Cisneros and vague intimations about a friend of a friend, etc. I'm really excited about the program and what it offers I was having a hard time determining fact from fiction. Would you say that the program is more traditional? After reading Cole Swensen, she seems more experimental. Did you take any of the classes from the Center of the Book?

Anyone know how long the personal statement should be and whether it should be single or double spaced? All the website says is, "Include your purpose in pursuing graduate study, any research you wish to pursue, and your future vocational goals"

Dear Decemberfinch,
I was wondering the same thing but since it did not say I am just doing mine single spaced. Want to trade SOP's for review? You can send me a private message if you are interested!

Thinking of applying to Iowa for next fall. Did you guys get in? If so, what do you think of it?

Iowa is very cold. Do you really want to get in? Frozen toes/ cold hearts/ neonatal icicles?

Sadly many of the schools I've been investigating are in cold country - Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, upstate New York, etc.
