Re: [augustmaria] Late notices [In reply to] Can't Post

I just dragged my file out.

Rejection dates:

Syracuse University: March 3rd (received on 6th)
Florida State University: March 7th (received on 11th)
University of Pittsburgh: March 13th (received on 15th)
University of Alabama: March 28th (received 31st)
New Mexico State University: April 20th (no idea) - not because I was on a waiting list, but because my application disappeared and by the time everything was sorted out it was too late

I had letters from University of Minnesota and University of Michigan, but I can't find them at the moment, so I'm checking my LJ.

Received letters:

University of Michigan: March 2nd
University of Minnesota: March 7th

Hey, Mainer -- I have three questions about this: Is this UIUC? And when and how did you hear from them? I haven't received anything from UIUC but since they haven't call me with positive news and they're already sending out rejections, I can add them to my list of "impending rejections," which now includes Cornell and Indiana.

My only definitive rejection is from Arizona. To cheer me up, my best friend's wife sent me a Google map of Tucson and said: "Why would you want to go there anyway? The city is ugly!" I laughed but have to disagree. While I like Phoenix better, all of Arizona is really relaxing and warm... *sigh* warm... I'm an hour north of Seattle and there's about eight inches of snow on the ground. In March. I hope the mail lady comes today anyway....

Re: [BlueVelveeta] Dear Speakeasy [In reply to] Can't Post

This is not a joke (though, admittedly, it sure sounds like one...): Yesterday, an unfamiliar number popped up on my caller ID. I swear to all of you I answered the phone, "Hello?" No answer. Me: "Grad school?" No answer. "Hello???? Hello?!?! Is that you grad school???" Nope. The caller (understandably) hung up, at which time I promptly redialed their number, when it turned out to be a bridal salon (I'm getting married in July).
I am bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
No acceptances, no rejections.
Hi, did anyone even GET my applications?!?!?!

Ha ha ha ha.

I'm going to start answering every phone call with, "Hello, grad school??" Even when it's a coworker calling my office extension and her name is right there on the caller ID. You never know.

Hilarious. What would you have done if it actually had been one of the schools? I can only imagine--I'd be stuttering. Or maybe I'd make that fake static noise, hang up, and then call back and apologize for the bad connection. Or apologize for letting my senile mother answer the phone.

Re: [strangelet] Late notices [In reply to] Can't Post

This might sound like a stupid question, but I can't help but wonder . . . is it safe to say that if you're one of the "late" acceptances (IE, tacitly waitlisted?) to a school with competitive funding, then you probably can't expect any money from them?

In Reply To
Hi Ryan,

Usually (in my experience), if you wait til April, it's b/c they waitlisted you. Many schools do not notify the people on their waitlist until after their first choice people have made final decisions.

Very quiet thus far. This day hasn't been the whirlwind I thought it would be to this point. Let's hope all the they are simply waiting to call after lunch. And just for a point of comparison, there were 9 schools that called the acceptees this day last year...

hmm... a possibility. though when i went to AWP Austin, there were certainly some (but not all) schools there. i don't think many of the really big names were there (some were, of course, but like Michigan, Syracuse, Texas, etc. weren't)

danip1, I'm not entirely sure, but I think I may have received one of your applications. Did you mean to send it to Indiana? I live near campus, and they must have delivered it here by mistake.

Congrats on the wedding! Hope you'll get good news on the other applications you sent out (or perhaps they ended up in the wrong hands too!).

Re: [In reply to] Can't Post

hi everyone,

i've been reading here for a while but haven't posted yet. i'd love to hear from others waiting on nonfiction notifications--i'm waiting on hollins, uncw, columbia and the new school. i've heard nothing so far.

good luck to us all--can't believe it's march already.

this is way off down the line, but does anyone have a sense of how any of those programs feel about deferments?

Deferrals are rather rare for MFAs. I obviously can't speak for all schools, but I do know that of all the ones I researched and applied to, this year and last, none of them accepted deferrals.

For some reason that makes me think of the Judy Blume book "Are you there God? It's me, Margaret". Very funny stuff...Caller ID is just another MFA hopeful enemy. Today may be the day for everyone, so good luck!

Congratulations! Rutgers-Newark was my dream program but for financial and logistical reasons I couldn't apply. Are you going to go there? You'll be in the pioneering first class, and I'm sure it will be a great experience.

Rejected (in poetry) from Washington University in St. Louis via postal mail.

It was a form letter and my name was spelled wrong… (maybe I typed my own name wrong on the application? Hrrm???)

Anyway, Harumph.

LOL Me too! Also, to whoever asked abt UNCW and deferring-- they don't let you. Even if you beg ;)

p.s. I had to edit this to add that I'm insanely happy about today being March 1st. February sucked and waiting sucks and winter sucks and now that it's March, at least the waiting will be over soon!
