Re: [Runlucy] Waiting Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

All that I've received from Montana are some e-mails about finding housing and fincancial aid, but no word on whether I'm accepted or not. I would love love love to be accepted into Montana with an assistantship. I'm from a very small (less than 700 people) town in Maine, so Montana fits well with me.

You applied to Iowa and Montana and you're worried about the change from New York to Boston being too drastic for you?! I admit Boston is smaller and less happening than New York, but I haven't stumbled upon a corn field yet. ;)

My guess is that Iowa will call the folks they want to accept as soon as they make the decisions (i.e. before the acceptances are posted online), but I know if I were in your shoes I'd be checking the website obsessively anyway. Good luck, and congrats on Emerson!

When reading notification gossip, remember that Iowa's nonfiction program is run through the English department and is not part of the Writer's Workshop.

Anyway, and this is pure conjecture, I can see how accepted students would be notified by phone before ever seeing anything online.

Trying to avoid staring at the phone and the mail slot...

Anyone know if International students are notified at a different time than resident American students? I'm sure it's different at many schools, but any thoughts?

I'm wondering because some folks have been rejected (hate that word) by UT Michener, yet my International admissions page remains the same. No word.

You must chill [In reply to] Can't Post

Dude, you must chill.

First of all, what you read on the Speakeasy, LJ communities, TheGradCafe, and even that MFA book-blog thingie does not represent the final word on what Iowa is up to. I'm sure Iowa has a system, and until you get your rejection letter in the mail, it's best to just relax (easier said that done, I know).

Iowa has 50 spots to fill, 25 in poetry. Do you think they called all 25 accepted poets on last Friday? Do you think they only call a few people at a time? Do they call the minority applicants first? Do they try to make their full-tuition and support offers before dipping into the other tiers of financial aid? Did that guy who got into Iowa and Cornell decide to accept the offer from Ithaca? What about the chick whose husband said he would prefer divorce over moving to Iowa City? Do you think she's made up her mind yet?

Here's something else to think about: Not everybody is addicted to MFA message boards (this is the sound of my personal shame, by the way).

If you've seen one note from a member of these message boards regarding acceptance news, I'd say that's par for the course. It's not unreasonable to think that out of Iowa's numerous applicants, only a handful know about LJ and only one happens to have been accepted in poetry at the time of the last post.

Could someone be fucking with you? Absolutely. Think about the hysterical hissy fits that would erupt on this board if someone were to post that they were accepted to the UC Irvine program. First of all, it's weeks before Irvine has traditionally notified people, and second of all, nobody on this board has ever gotten into Irvine.

Now that the acceptance notification gossip has begun, I know how hard it is to stay calm. There's no Iowa area code showing up on my caller Id, and I'm freaking out about it, too. Still, you have to wait until you get your official notice. Seriously.

Good luck, man.

I know you are correct bighark. Things are just a bit easier in the P.M. Crack the red wine...filter the world (the future)...use a hazy glow of manufactured indifference to consider the myriad geographical/philosophical possibilities.

Your wise words are appreciated.

I've worked on nothing but screenplays and stageplays over the past couple months...fiction has been a difficult thing to focus on.

I look forward to April 15th so I can get some serious fiction writing done, wherever that may be.

Forcing myself to leave the apartment tonight so I can stop checking and rechecking my email & PW.
If anyone's in the NYC area, I'm headed over to BAM in Brooklyn for its Dinner & a Reading series.
Jonathan Safran Foer is reading tonight and then interviewing with Kurt Andersen. It's a full dinner with wine included, AND I don't think it's sold out yet.
So yes, for those of you in the area....

Just got an e-mail from Syracuse, had a heart attack, then realized it was just a mass e-mail about financial aid, which they probably send out like junk mail to all their applicants. This sucks. I need to get myself away from the computer.

I hear you. I'm not sure how much longer I (and my boyfriend) can take this torture. Oregon said they notify "by mid-March." Last year someone was accepted by phone on March 11-- which is SO. FAR. AWAY.

I'm going to Rome from March 18-24 so I really hope I know by then, because my cell phone will not work over there.

Last night I went to go see The Squid and the Whale to take my mind off schoolwork and these notifications. It's really, really good, so go see it, especially you fiction writers. Jeff Bridges plays the novelist Jonathan Baumbach. I couldn't believe it was all pretty much autobiographical-- what a hellish experience.

For all you Iowa hopefuls out there, keep in mind that even if Iowa has called everyone in their first round (which we don't know for sure), most years they do dip into their waitlist, so not having gotten a phone call doesn't mean you won't be going to Iowa. Yes, people do turn down spots at Iowa to go elsewhere.

Meanwhile, I am feeling distinctly not chill, so my sympathies to all the worriers out there. This waiting is so so hard. I know it's still early and many programs haven't notified anyone yet, but nonetheless my self-doubt looms larger and larger as day after day passes with no news. I got that Syracuse financial aid email too. What a let down.

Wow. We live so close we could be stalking the same mailman!
Check out BAM's website (bam.org) - there's always a ton of great stuff going on there.
There are other people reading in the series - Julia Alvarez and Jonathan Lethem are two off the top of my head.
One Story's reading series is the last Friday of every month, so tomorrow Patrick Ryan (who will be honored in BASS 2006) will be reading at Piano's. I help read for the magazine and I'm at their events a lot. Their really warm and friendly and small and great. And it's great to support up-and-coming writers.
Anyways, this must be quite boring for the non-NYC folks, so message me whenever if you have any Q's!

The Squid and the Whale is really good, but if you want to watch a movie that will make you feel better about rejections watch/read Wonder Boys, in which a talented student LEAVES school to be a writer, rather than doing what we're doing. Also: similar situation in Francine Prose's Blue Angel... plus it makes fun of undergraduate workshops.

i live in berkeley, and saw jsf at city arts and lectures last year. he's wonderful, and i think going to bam might be just the kind of thing to get your mind off of this stuff.

i saw billy collins and kay ryan last week with garrison keillor at city arts and lectures, and they were great. not that it really got my mind off of grad school--i still managed to get up and ask their opinions on mfa programs in front of hundreds of people.

and what was their reply? keep cooking, of course. poets who've "made it" seem to think so lowly of mfa programs. all i want is the chance to write, and be around other poets. and i surely won't get that by working 60 hour weeks on my feet.

Did everyone who's applied to Columbia have a mild heart attack (like maybe, say... I did) when they checked their email and saw admissions-arts@columbia in their inbox today?!
That's just cruel.
I'm very excited about the success of Adam Haslett. I'm happy for him.
However, there should never, EVER be faculty updates in your mailbox when you're still freakin' waiting for an admissions decision.

argh.

agreed! same response. and i don't even know why i get nervous-- i know that the packet i sent to columbia was full of typos (hell of a thing to realize a day after the deadline's passed, that you've sent your draft portfolio rather than the finished portfolio) and thanks to the lack of financial assistance i couldn't go there even if the readers were blind (or thought it avant-garde spelling, perhaps)...

and still i jumped.

for what it's worth, i took a workshop at the harvard extension school with paul harding, a former classmate of haslett's at iowa, and he claimed that haslett was rejected twice from iowa before getting in on the third try. and it looks like the man's done alright for himself.

needless to say, i remind myself of this constantly.

Okay. I know I am merely adding my voice to the chorus, but as of today I am officially wrecked by this process. I woke up this morning with the sure knowledge that I will be rejected by all twelve schools I applied to, which knowledge did not prevent me from checking my mail at 9am (you know, those rare midnight deliveries) just in case my hunch was wrong. I've only posted a few times here, but I must tell you all that I enjoy your jittery company. Thanks a lot.

sigh. i was really hoping. that said, i'd love to live in boulder.
