i've been thinking about that, whether iowa is my top choice. maybe i'm just preempting rejection, but at the moment, i would have to say no. i applied to iowa, cornell, hopkins, brown, michigan, and michener. got accepted to cornell last week, and i do think it makes a lot more sense for me to go there, or hopkins, or brown, assuming that the funding is comparable. my fiction is so influenced by other fields that i'm concerned about the isolatedness of the iwp from the rest of the school. cornell, for instance, has an amazing english lit. phd program that has a minority and third world studies specialty, which is really interesting to me. hopkins has alice mcdermott, who i've been in workshop with and is absolutely amazing, as well as amazing science people that i'm always fascinated to talk to. brown encourages risk-taking and has risd. if anything, potentially picking between those three schools would be really hard. these things are pretty fluky though, so i wouldn't at all be surprised if i don't get in anywhere else. in a way, that's totally fine since the decision will be made for me. that said, i love lan samantha chang and marilynne robinson, so it will be extremely difficult to resist if the unlikely thing happens and i get accepted. i'm going to have to visit to see whether my theories are correct. i doubt that'll happen though so it's fine.
