Got a call from Pam Houston yesterday, and I'm in at Davis, one of my top two choices. I haven't talked to her yet, so I don't know about funding, but the word on the street is that everyone gets funded, and everyone gets funded equally. I'm going to call her this morning and find out more. The other program I'm really interested in is Warren Wilson--I've got two kids and happy little house in Sacramento--I'll be sending that application off today.

Congratulations Texasgurl (and anyone else I've lost in the mix who has heard good news)!!
I know what you mean about uprooting your life. I'm having this horrible feeling that I should have applied to more schools, but I'm at a (very comfortable) job for three years and have wrangled amazing rent in Brooklyn and only applied to NYC schools.
(arghhh!!! just got a call from a random 212 [NYC area code for those not in the metro area] and I got all panicky... NYU calling? Columbia? New School? Nope... just confirming my haircut tomorrow. Oh my aching nerves)
Anyway, I'm starting to wonder about what it would be like to up and leave and write somewhere else in the country, just abandon what's comfortable here...
Perhaps it will be in my favor to be rejected this year and to muster up some courage for next years applications...

Aubrie, I'm one of those people who will be uprooting (I hope!) and I think there are advantages to either situation. My guess is that after a big move, I'll be kind of discombobulated and distracted for a while and I might have trouble really hunkering down and writing. (Even though time to write is the whole point!) So if you stay settled, even though a lot will change, maybe enough will stay the same that you'll be able to hit the ground running. I hope though, that once I get settled wherever I end up, being in a new place where I'm not totally comfortable will be invigorating and feed my writing.

Meanwhile, I totally sympathize with your phone call story... I got an envelope from Brown at work today. No name in the return address, just that Brown University stationary. Did I question the fact that this envelope appeared at my work address, an address I never gave to Brown? No. For an instant it somehow seemed rational that they might send notification to me at work. My heart started to thump as I ripped the envelope open and--work-related mail, that's all. Urggh. I hate waiting.

Aubrie, I hope you get into the best school for you in the NY area. You've applied to some great, hard to get into places...so good luck! All you need is one YES.

I know it, because this week I got REJECTED by Columbia College_Chicago, and ACCEPTED by Northwestern yesterday!
Yes I have 4 other applications out there: Bennington, UIC, Warren Wilson, and the University of the South NEW low res summer only program---you go 6 weeks in summer, so if you are a teacher you don't have to quit your job! But now I don't care, because someone said YES!

Someone will say YES to all of you. But waiting is lousy. So let's hear from everyone when they get their FIRST acceptance, one is all you need.

ahhhhh!!! the waiting is killing me, too!

i never thought i'd post on a forum like this after seeing a friend get sucked into a law school forum last year. but now i'll pretty much do ANYTHING to pass the time.

i applied to just six schools--brown, davis, iowa, nyu, wustl, and montana. in poetry. i have mixed feelings about my application. lots of doubts.

the only thing keeping me going is the fact that i applied to just one program four years ago--sarah lawrence--and i got in. but then i chose not to go. i remember that letter was thin, just one piece of paper, and it came around 18 march.

i want to know everything NOW, but only good news. seriously, i could be six years old.

Hi. I'm new. I got into Cornell for fiction (woo hoo!). I'm kinda glad that I didn't look in these kinds of forums, because I would have been a wreck. I wasn't at all expecting hearing this early. So who's the other person who got into Cornell here? I would love to be in touch and compare notes and all that.

Ok, so as my computer locked up this afternoon, in the middle of a very long form I had to submit for some stupid thing, the phone rings, 10 minutes before I have to be at school to pick up the kids....and it's the University of Maine(Stonecoast) telling me I'm accepted....a pretty good Friday after all, the heck with the computer melt-down.

Hi folks! I just discovered this forum and thought I ought post.

I applied to four schools last year and didn't get in anywhere. I moved to Iowa City over the summer in the hopes of at least being able to hang around the Writer's Workshop. I'm waiting to hear back and Iowa is the only school I applied to this time around ('cause I'm not moving again).

Crazy idea, I know, especially because I doubt it will matter to them that my address has changed.

Going CRAZY with the waiting. CRAZY!

I did the same thing as atrivedi- got rejected and moved to Iowa City anyway; waiting to hear this year also. I thought I was the only one! Wonder how many of us there are? Best of luck to you.

Congratulations Coolshoes! Stonecoast is supposed to be a great low-res program, and it's in a gorgeous place -- Elli Meerpoll (sp?) who used to post here, went there. (not sure if she's finished or not). Anyway, that's terrific. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the good thoughts, folks. Don't know if I'll go to Stonecoast or not...I'm a fan of Joyce Maynard and she's on the faculty for the low-res; also heard from West. Ct. St. Univ (a yes, during the phone interview) a few hours later...still waiting on Lesley, Queens Univ. and Goucher (all low res) and The New School ('cause I live near NYC, even though it's rumored no human being ever gets accepted!). Good luck to everyone....keep us posted (ugh, choice of word!!). Funny, I had so little confidence going into this, I just figured I'd go to whatever school accepted me....now the idea of having to choose is both wonderful and awful. I was so astounded to get these yes verdicts, I didn't even ask about financial aid...I did file the FAFSA and adhere to each school's fin. aid. criteria, but I wonder when/if you hear about that. Stonecoast said my answer is due by around 3/15 - seems so soon.....well, gotta go do something useful for my family now...and just think, no mail on Monday!

Hey Coolshoes - let's keep each other updated... I applied to New School too but have no idea when they notify people ( I know NYU and Columbia are late due to the obsessive checking of previous posts...).
Any other NYC schools? I applied to Hunter as well, and I think they might notify sometime soon.
Actually... I have no idea - I just really want to hear something, ANYTHING, soon.

Hey Aubrie - Don't know when The New School notifies, since I can't find anyone who has ever gotten in!!!
Seriously, any time I mention to someone that I applied there, they all say, "Oh, no one ever gets in."
Anyway, I'm thinking I may be better off w/low res., as it might be less disruptive to my family (I have 2 kids) if I am gone a few weeks a year rather than trekking into the city a few nights a week for 2 academic years, plus all the traffic and/or public transport headaches...

Hello speakeasiers, I wish I'd found this place sooner. It's nice to hear that others are going through this stressful process. I'm not alone. About the New School: my husband got his rejection in April. I don't know what it's like for those who are accepted. I currently live in Iowa City with my husband who is in the Workshop. After obsessively reading past posts and seeing that some people had gotten calls from Iowa around this time in 2004, I rushed to check our caller ID (we tend to not answer the phone). I couldn't believe it when I actually saw the Workshop's phone number. Someone called on Thursday. I know I sound ridiculous, but right now that call (and the possibility that it wasn't for my husband) gives me some hope.
I applied to the Workshop, Indiana, UMich, Johns Hopkins, Brown, UCDavis, Syracuse, Arizona, Stegner, and Arkansas (sent them a manuscript). Has anyone heard anything from Arkansas--positive or negative? I have a friend in the Michner program who told me one of his classmates sent a manuscript to Ark and never heard back. I'm just wondering if that's the way they do things (only responding to those they want to apply to the program and leaving everyone else hanging).
Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone who's written for sharing your thoughts and anxieties. And Stephanie (I think that's right) I really enjoyed your reply to SBCman and completely agree.

Hope it's the workshop calling for you!

I did hear back from Arkansas (acceptance letter dated Jan 27th), I had to turn them down, however, because of an earlier acceptance at my local univ (2 year program feels better to me). I imagine they'll (Ark) send out letters, but the whole process (at every school) feels ultra-glacial.

2 down...10 (including Stegner) to go...

Iowa, UCIrvine, NYU, Cornell, Stegner, UMichigan, UMass, UOregon, UT Michener, Arizona, UBC, Arkansas

Is Iowa (with full funding of course) everyone's top choice? Just curious.

i've been thinking about that, whether iowa is my top choice.

maybe i'm just preempting rejection, but at the moment, i would have to say no. i applied to iowa, cornell, hopkins, brown, michigan, and michener. got accepted to cornell last week, and i do think it makes a lot more sense for me to go there, or hopkins, or brown, assuming that the funding is comparable.

my fiction is so influenced by other fields that i'm concerned about the isolatedness of the iwp from the rest of the school. cornell, for instance, has an amazing english lit. phd program that has a minority and third world studies specialty, which is really interesting to me. hopkins has alice mcdermott, who i've been in workshop with and is absolutely amazing, as well as amazing science people that i'm always fascinated to talk to. brown encourages risk-taking and has risd. if anything, potentially picking between those three schools would be really hard. these things are pretty fluky though, so i wouldn't at all be surprised if i don't get in anywhere else. in a way, that's totally fine since the decision will be made for me.

that said, i love lan samantha chang and marilynne robinson, so it will be extremely difficult to resist if the unlikely thing happens and i get accepted. i'm going to have to visit to see whether my theories are correct. i doubt that'll happen though so it's fine.
