Ha, I feel so parochial -- as if "orangegirl" had to be related to Orange County, right? Argh! (I live next to OC, but inland, so we really envy the possibility of living in OC, minutes away from, or directly by, the beach). But oh well, enough of that! Congrats, Orangegirl, you do have an acceptance -- hey, that should certainly mean something, as Hopperfu and Kateb said, right? By the way, I sympathize with Kateb's words to the effect that this application process, paradoxically, has hindered the writing a little bit -- amazing (and scary) how the means can become the end, don't you all think? Now instead of thinking of fiction, I find myself thinking of statements of purpose... which only goes to show how pathetic one (i.e., me) can be :) Back to your question, Orangegirl: I applied to NYU, New School, SLC, Johns Hopkins, Michener Center at UT Austin, Iowa, UMass Amherst, and UCI. And as I type these names I have an incontrollable fit of laughter because there's simply no way these places will accept me, esp. since for the Dec. 15 ones my sample was crappier than it could have been (that sort of rules out UCI and NYU). For the Jan. 15 deadlines I am not happy, but let's say moderately satisfied, with what I sent. It is, for all its limitations, what I am capable of writing now. But I will never know whether NYU and UCI would have rejected me if I'd sent the sample that I sent to the rest of the schools (I know, this is exactly the kind of questions that it doesn't make any sense to ask). Anyway, assuming that I'll be universally rejected this time, I'll add Brown and Cornell to the list next year. By the way, someone got into Cornell in the last few days, was it you Hopper Fu, I think? Congrats ! And I wouldn't worry too much about not having taken lit classes -- if what I've heard is right, the sample is what really matters; the rest has to be, well, within the realm of decency, but that's it (that is, if you haven't been molesting minors or spent some time in jail you should be fine -- they won't say Oh wait, this sample is fantastic, but she hasn't taken many lit classes). But anyway, you already have evidence that this is it: Colorado. OK, I hear the postman coming -- talk to you later ! G.- PS: Did you apply for poetry or fiction?
