Re: [amnesziac] Columbia College Chicago [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey this is actually my first time posting on speakeasy, even though I've been straight-up lurking for months. Congrats Amnesziac!!!! I also got a phone call from David Trinidad about Columbia College Chicago this afternoon (with Follett Fellowship offer).

Do you think you will visit the program?

Re: [kkf2] Columbia College Chicago [In reply to] Can't Post

I just found out that I didn't receive any funding aside from a tentative graduate instructorship, so I will probably ride out the three weeks we have to decide and see if any funding leaks down to me from declines.

I'd rather not take out anymore loans to get a fine art degree, you know?

But it's okay.
I can apply to schools next year.

Congratulations to you! Chicago is a fine city.

Re: waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi everyone, I banished myself from the boards for a while to try to break myself of the post-checking addiction (obviously it didn't quite work, but I think it helped tone down the obsession.) Congrats to all the new admits, and sympathies to those who've received bad news recently.

I have a question: Who else is still waiting on a Cornell rejection, and do you think it just means that they're too busy to send us our letters all at once? I live in Arizona, not on Mars. I just want it to get here, already. Of course, now that I've posted this, I'm sure I'll get mine in the mail tomorrow...But I say that every day.

Yeah absolutely...it sucks a little because not only was this year completely off the charts for competition & applicant numbers, but also for funding.

PS @ Found: Cornell's rejection wasn't nearly as pleasant as Michigan's, maybe you're waitlisted??

Agh, part of me is wanting to let myself think that, but most of me knows better.

Why do some schools not want to tell their waitlisters, anyway? I have a friend who got a waitlist letter from a school, and they said "We see no reason to keep you in the dark." I think that makes the most sense, now that the internet tells us everything. Keeping people in no-news limbo, in a waitlist situation, seems kind of crazy now.

Oh, you're right. I'm the nervous type when it comes to calling schools, and I just keep thinking it will be in the mailbox. But thanks for the push, I know I should just do it.

Ah I know, I'm waitlisted at a school and they do not reveal the number of waitlisted ppl or my rank. Ahhh...

Also, I bet Cornell is super nice to you on the phone, I called once earlier in the process and had a very pleasant convo.

Called around today... [In reply to] Can't Post

Called around to the different schools I'm waiting for today (either those that haven't notified yet or those that haven't notified ME yet), and here's the scorecard for the ones I got a hold of (most of these stats are for fiction, as most places asked my genre):

Greensboro: As expected, very nice and helpful. Applications are still under consideration, as all have said.

New Orleans: Applications are still under review. The person I spoke to said notifications would be sent out in mid-April (really???), but I'm hoping she was just saying that so I wouldn't hold them to April 1 or something.

Rutgers-Newark: I don't know about ALL applications, but for my file, I was told "no final decision yet." So that might be promising to others out there, too.

ASU: The person I got a hold of (at the main number for the dept./program) said she had a list of 5 names of people accepted (and that they were only taking 5). I wasn't on it, unfortunately. Those 5 have (I think) been contacted already, but she didn't have a waitlist or anything yet, so she said that was all she could tell me and wished me the best. (She was very nice--as were, I think, all of the people I spoke to.)

There are still a couple more I'm waiting on but wasn't able to get a hold of (namely, Houston, LSU, and Oregon, but supposedly Oregon doesn't want calls right now and LSU sent out letters today (according to TSE)!).

Not to make UNCG overwhelmed with calls, but for other waiters, you might want to give them a call (especially if your online status shows missing documents). My application materials from the grad school haven't been shipped over to the department yet, and whomever I spoke with at the department said it could be because it's a slow process or maybe they're missing something at the Graduate School and holding the file. YIKES! She said my writing sample, etc., would still be considered and that it wouldn't slow the process in the department, but that I should make sure the Grad School has everything just in case (so the dept. can have my recommendations, etc., on hand if they are interested in me as a candidate in the future). Just FYI!

Best of continued luck, everyone.

Re: [als02] Called around today... [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't know if this is really helpful to anyone else or not, but I talked to the grad school at uncg yesterday and they told me that all of the applications were going to be forwarded by the end of the week. This kind of confused me because the CW dept made it sound like it was unusual for my application not to have been forwarded yet. -All- of my documents were showing up missing as of yesterday, and then after I called and talked to a few people they were able to confirm that I wasn't missing anything and that my file was ready to send over. He reassured me again that all files were being sent over this week. Confusing... :)

Als02, when I called UNO they told me the same thing. When I emailed they told me anytime from now till the second week in April.

Re: [cmatthews] Called around today... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, cmatthews. I mean, I'm assuming UNO goes by the same AWP standards as most other schools, right? I just don't want to find out April 14 or something since I have to let another school know what I'm doing (and so other people who might get bumped up for that school or get funding can have all they need to make a good decision as well). Let's just cross our fingers that UNO doesn't pull those shenanigans ;-)

And thanks to you, too, SevenFreckles. That makes me feel better (I was about to call and bug the Grad School again today... I guess I'll just wait it out?).

Re: [als02] Called around today... [In reply to] Can't Post

After trying to call UC Irvine, as I haven't heard a peep but know they've accepted people already, I scrounged for an e-mail address, and sent one off...trying to sound professional...I did the same with Houston and got a "Sorry we can't give you better news" reply...but very very friendly. I'm afraid of getting the same from Irvine...I'd rather they just not respond and give me a letter in a few weeks if that's the case! Eek!

Still trying to decide between Davis and Brooklyn...

Good luck everyone!

Fulbright [In reply to] Can't Post

This is just to let everyone know that a poetry spot will be opening up at McNeese. Also, there will be one less person on the Ohio State waitlist.

I was notified yesterday that I got the Fulbright to Slovakia that I applied for back in October. I'm still waiting to see where all I get in so I can find out who will defer my admission until I get back.

As for this year, though, there will be the openings listed above and one less poetry competitor at V-Tech, UVA, Ole Miss, and UNCG. Just wanted to let you all know!

I didn't really know much about the Fulbright until you just posted about it. I read it quickly on the web. It sounds like fun! Damn! I'd love to do something like that but I probably won't qualify.

Congrats, man! Sounds awesome!
