Re: [Sugah] Crazy [In reply to] Can't Post

I am so bummed. I am home sick, so I don't have the email from Madison with my login and password to check my application status because it's on my work computer.

And I'm thinking, wouldn't it be perfect to get rejected from my top school while I'm home sick anyway? I'm already in bed with my covers up to my chin, so I could just be all sick and depressed at the same time, instead of needing to get into bed when I'm healthy again.

I could be wrong, but I feel like I'm one of the only people who haven't heard from any schools. I'm waiting on:

UW Madison
Oregon
Syracuse
UT Austin
UC Irvine
Colorado State
UNC Wilmington
Texas State
Florida State

I've heard nothing!!!!!!!! :(

Re: [jayg] Crazy [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been contacted by UT Austin and Texas State to clarify some things on my application. Austin (the MA program through the English dept, not the MFA Michener program) wanted to verify my phone numbers and ask which one I want them to call first. Texas State asked me to resend one of my recommendor's letters since it never got there.

If nothing else, this tells us that these schools are in the reviewing process, and their answers can't be far behind.

I also seem to have applied to all the slooowww schools that like to torture their applicants by being the last ones to make their decisions.

UT Austin
U Houston
Texas State
Vanderbilt
Brown
Johns Hopkins
Columbia

Re: [jayg] Crazy [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope you start feeling better soon! Don't worry Jayg, I've been complaining for a good 2 weeks about not hearing anything from IU, Illinois, or Western Michigan. We just have to keep reminding ourselves.. it's still early in the game. We should know a lot more within the next 7-10 days. Deep breaths. Deeeeeep breaths.

At about 7 I was laughing and shouting at the phone saying clearly no schools wanted poets this year. In the middle of this the phone rings! It's a phone number we've never seen before in an area code I don't recognize! My heart stops!

It was a telemarketer asking if we wanted to be secret shoppers. *sigh*

At least I have 8 inches of snow to keep me entertained today :)

I've got the snow too! That's the only nice thing about being sick, I'm so not leaving the house and going out in this crap.

Now I'm trying to bribe one of my co-workers into breaking into my work computer and finding the UW email for me. I promise that this process is making me WAY more neurotic than I normally am.

Anyone know of any really late application deadlines that super nervous applicants can still round out their options with?

Sad though, I really was all about UW!

How would you do that with recommendations, ask your recommenders to send out more?

I've got copies from mine, so I'd just have them sign over the envelope seals and mail them myself. That's what I did for most my applications anyway.

Anyone know what the deal is with "rolling" deadlines?

I did the same thing -- have my recommenders sign across the seal and mail them myself. It sure eliminated a lot of stress knowing that everything had for sure reached the schools I was applying to. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was starting to worry that I had done something wrong.

I'm going to go paint my bathroom. Maybe if I have paint on my hands I'll be less likely to touch the computer.

I definitely went straight to the City College website after reading about their late deadline (May 1).

But, does anyone know what kind of funding they offer (if any)?

I think the funding opportunities are minimal. However, tuition for the CUNY MFA programs is the cheapest of any, as far as I can tell.

I am in at Central Michigan, I think. I called the English dept. today and the woman said something about internal mailings and that I have been signed in for regular status admission. It is for English Lit. though and not Creative Writing. They have a creative writing option, so once I get my confirmation papers, I will see about getting into that program as well.

Calm before the storm [In reply to] Can't Post

I think a lot of programs will start calling and mailing acceptances in the beginning of March, which makes this week feel like the calm before the storm. I have no idea how to feel. I feel like I'm bracing myself for a wave of rejection letters, or multiple waves of hysteria as people begin reporting acceptances that I'm not getting.

Yikes!

My undergrad university has a recommendation letter service through the Career Center where you pay a yearly fee and have your recommenders send their recommendations directly to the letter service. And, it is the letter service that sends to the schools that I choose. It's made sending out letters of rec. super easy for me. Although, the downside is that the letter service will not send me the letters, so they have to be sent in separately from the rest of the application package.

Perhaps, your undergrad university has such program?

rutgers notification [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi--
I'm a long-time lurker on this blog, and I know a couple of people have heard from rutgers-newark, but I was wondering if many people were still waiting? I'm just wondering if I should give up on it or not.

Thanks.

The first news [In reply to] Can't Post

I FINALLY heard from one of my 7 schools today. George Mason, my alma mater, wait listed me for fiction. I have to say, I was disappointed but it's better than a rejection! The director of the program actually wrote me one of my recs, so I have high hopes. At least I'm trying to.

Re: [moirajm] rutgers notification [In reply to] Can't Post

hi moirajm.

i think all of the rutgers people have been notified. but, i spoke with Jayne Anne Phillips and it sounded (please don't hold me to this) like some spots may open up (for fiction) I myself, haven't made a final decision yet. it sounds like an amazing program and JAP is an incredible writer (and Tayari, and Alice)...

the $$$ is worrying me a little....

best, Kadence

Today I received an email from Indiana. I was cautiously excited as I opened it, only to receive notification from the Office of International Admissions that my application was incomplete. Bizarre, since I live in Chicago. So many false alarms...

Dude, that's hilarious. I wonder: did he mail it to himself, or just drop it in his tweedy pocket? What was his experience reading it? Did he find himself convincing?

Junior Mass,

And the even funnier thing is, he crossed out the cordial "Dear Ms. _____" and wrote, in purple pen, "Brittany." Then he left a personalized note telling me to hang in there. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!

And I applied to UMass for fiction and haven't heard anything. I checked my app status and it just says it's complete and in review. BLAH.

Apparently, 920 people applied to Iowa this year in fiction alone. That means they're accepting about .02% of their total applicant pool. Anyone else feeling freaked out by this?

If I'm right in thinking that Iowa has 25 fiction spots, then they will admit 2.7% of their fiction applicants. So we ought to only be 1/100th the amount of freaked out we might have otherwise been.
