Yeah, I felt it was condescending. Of course, there's no way that news could be shared without it seeming that way. I'm just hoping that getting three big acceptances like that is like winning the lottery with the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42.

I wish I was lucky enough to be wanted by my top three schools (still could be, who knows!). But I'm afraid the chances of that happening are about the same as a piece of that dead satellite they shot down landing on my house.

I agree. Posting that you've been accepted to three of the top five programs in the nation (some would argue the top three) is implicitly smug. I think what's getting to people the most is how nonchalant (s)he is about it. Had (s)he freaked out a little (as most of us would were we in his(er) position) (s)he might've come off a little better.

And lucky? I seriously doubt it. I mean, if it were only two of them it would be one thing, but given that (s)he was accepted to all three, luck likely had very little to do with it.

Must've had a killer sample. Is what I'm saying, I guess.

No "LOST" spoilers, please. I've only just started the second season on DVD, so I don't know all the secrets, yet. :) (How is it "not that bad"? Don't tell me! Waiting to hear about MFA programs is bad suspense, but "LOST" is good suspense!)

That's a good point, Bennyprof. There was a distinct lack of freaking out. Most of us lose it a little everytime the phone rings or we see our postal carrier.

A few exclamation points would've dulled the edges a bit.

Come on kids, don't hate. Jealousy works the opposite way you want it to.

Seth's blog is a place to report acceptances, and the individual was doing just that. Sure, three top acceptances has the appearance of being greedy - but remember, they still only get to take up one spot at one school. I'm sure plenty of other people applied to those same three schools (and then some), and would have felt just as obligated to report.

Good news is there are 2 prestigious slots opening up once the person decides.

Unless the individual also possesses the virtue of translocation, s/he can only attend one school. Hopefully s/he is a fiction writer who plans to attend Cornell, because I've already been eliminated there.

My mother had surgery Monday. I finally yelled at her Wednesday telling her it was the worst possible time for her to have surgery. Our phone has been ringing a lot with people checking up on her. My heart stops every time. I am sorely in need of a beer.

It is now 4pm on a Friday... isn't it time for Illinois to call me, tell me they loved my poetry and want me?? Pretty please?

I really didn't think his (replace with "her" if you like) response was all that condescending. I mean we are talking about writers here. What we do is inherently elitist.

However, this poster was a wee bit condescending:

So that makes three people that were accepted into Cornell and Michigan. And then two of those were accepted into UMass and Iowa, respectively. Must have had some serious writing samples.

If you guys will go back and look, it's actually two different people...

The first, "hmmm" got into Cornell, Michigan, and Iowa.

The second, "a.m." got into Cornell, Michigan, and UMass.

"hmm" is not gender specific, and said : I got into Cornell (phone 2/9, 2/8? something like that), Michigan (email 2/19) and Iowa (phone 2/19).

I know that they are doing this in rounds, and that it is way early in the process, and that people shouldn't be too discouraged.

I got really lucky, but I can't go everywhere, and so more spots will open up as people decide. Which,in my case, may take a while.

Both of them are right....they're decisions will open up a lot of spots. And there's no telling how many other people got multiple acceptances from those top schools. It seems to me that people usually apply to them in bundles...

Alas, I'm in Indiana. My husbands mini fridge stocked with Bell's Porter will just have to suffice :)

In all seriousness. This is my first time doing this. Is it normal for a school to accept one genre then go days or even weeks without accepting the other genres? I only ask because neither Illinois nor IU appear to have accepted any poets yet.

I think it's more than the writing sample, though. If you give off total douche bag vibes, I don't think they'll want you no matter how good your sample is.

Besides, it's a lot about taste, too. I've read some poetry from Iowa students that I thought was boring as shit. For another example, my creative writing professor said I was one of the best students she's ever had. However, another professor I got to read my sample absolutely tore me to shreds--he's got a boner for stuff like Keats, anyway, so more modern aesthetics don't float his boat. You will never be able to please everyone, basically, so don't get too upset just 'cause someone else is really good at presenting themselves on paper. Your application just has to strike the right person at the right time as being "good enough".

I don't think we should compare our writing samples to mystery ones we can't even see and just ultimately decide that they are somehow "better." We need pull ourselves together here! Every writer has a different voice, and we want the MFA to grow and nurture that voice--our distinctive voice that makes our writing different and unique. If "top school x" doesn't pick us, I think we just have to have faith that, ultimately, that school isn't the right place for us at this particular time.

Don't know if this will ease your anxieties, but I applied to Iowa for fiction and haven't heard anything yet. Not sure about the poetry side though. Iowa is my dream school too, and I'm trying not to lose hope, but it's kinda hard when you read that people are already being contacted-----and boy! three top programs in two weeks! Is there any chance that's a joke?
