Thank you so much for the info; it's very kind of you to share that. I didn't expect to hear from MT until March, but I didn't know when in March. I actually haven't read many posts from MT applicants and I've been wondering how many applied there this year.

Yes, thank you. It's always nice to get a heads up. I am a Montana applicant (fiction).

I'm waiting anxiously for Pitt too. My girlfriend had a dream that I told her I had been accepted to a University in Pennsylvania, and she didn't even know I'd applied to Pitt. I know that's ridiculous, but in my current state has got me going all kind of bananas.

I think the number of total applicants is around 450 - 500 and there are about 20 spots up for grabs. (Fiction, poetry, non fiction combined).

Good luck everbody! Feel free to PM me any questions about the program. It's a hoot.

I just found out today that one of my recommenders didnt send letters to three of my schools. so my applications have been somebody in the grad offices coaster for their diet coke for the last two months instead of going on to the readers.
i hate this.
I'm going to eat icecream.

Oh no! Didn't the schools tell you? Why didn't your recommender send the stuff in?

I gave my recommender's SEVEN months to send stuff in and one sent everything in right away and the other waiting until A WEEK BEFORE THE DEADLINES.

I'd be so angry if I were you!!! Don't worry...I can't imagine that they would refuse to review your application because of a recommender...obviously that wasn't in your control...

I had a bad recommender as well...one of my bosses actually. He talked the big talk about how great he was at writing letters, but would never actually get around to writing the rec. Finally I had to send off my applications, before Christmas, without his letter. I had to pester him so hard to finally give it to me. Then, when he did, he HIT ON ME and said that if he were 20 years younger he'd be chasing me around trying to...you know. (verbatim.)

GROSS!!! JUST GIVE ME THE LETTER OLD MAN!

He got fired shortly afterwards. *whew*.

This whole process is just a nightmare.

I honestly have no idea why he didnt send them. he's a wonderful teacher and super supportive. I'm assuming he just forgot somehow. I did give him tons of notice (and stamped, addressed envelopes) before I left the state. For some reason the schools didnt let me know until today, and said they couldnt review my application until they received the one missing letter. But that was by email, so maybe if I call them and beg...
I guess I've learned a lesson, if they ask for two recs, ask three people so you have a safety net. although I really dont want to repeat this process next year.

I found myself in a similar situation a couple weeks ago with Columbia. They sent me an email ominously mentioning that my application could not be reviewed until they had received the missing letter and a lovely late fee. While my professor sent the letter out that day, it took about a week for the letter to go through the campus mail system, which allowed me a good deal of time to panic. Their tone over the phone was entirely different though -- they thanked me for staying "on top of things" and assured me that they would never "not admit an applicant based on third party materials." I gather that this is a generally accepted policy among universities, so I wouldn't be too worried...

Columbia sucks like that. I paid the late fee last year and then I got rejected anyways, and who's to say I would have wanted to pay for what they might have offered me? (apparently they have slightly better funding now, but still, their school is a paragon of everthing that is rotten about bourgeois privelege....all Columbia wannabes would be much better served to apply to NYU, an excellent school, and one intimately more connected to the arts scene in new york...did you know the authors of the nanny diaries went there? and the olsen twins? and haley joel osment? thrills!

But on a more serious note, who else is applying to Colorado, and does anyone know anything about their release dates?

Anyone have any ideas about UW-Madison? They are my top pick and I haven't heard a peep from them since they lost my application (or the post office lost it) in January. I'm dying to email someone there, but trying to restrain myself.

Jason, thank you thank you thank you for that. Having a sense of when, even a vague sense, is making this much more bearable. I'm sort of in love with the program at Montana (and with most of the programs on my list, but still), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I was under the impression, however, that it was one of the larger programs - that they admitted about 15 people per genre, not 20 in all genres combined. This deflates my little hope balloon significantly. Was it just wishful thinking on my part, or did it used to be bigger? How many students wind up matriculating in each genre? Thanks....

Re: [Vesuvia] Indiana wins [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Vesuvia,

Last year we had (aproximately):

11 new fiction
7 new poets
2 new non fiction

And we had similar numbers with the poets & fiction writers the year before, but with a couple more non-fiction thrown in.

As far as I know, @ 20 has been the usual size for a while now. The puts the entire size of the program at about 40 - 50. (Some people choose to take longer than 2 years to graduate).

Oh, and this doesn't mean that only 20 are accepted--I believe the practice is to accept more than that and then assume some aren't coming.

Good luck!

I emailed their admissions person directly yesterday and asked when they thought they would be announcing admissions decisions and never heard back. : (

I met with my thesis advisor yesterday (I'm finishing my MA in fiction right now) and he told me this story about a mythical student he had once who was apparently the best writer he had ever encountered (student-wise). Anyway, mythical student applied to MFA programs and was rejected from all of them, and he just never understood it. I think he told me this story to be encouraging. Lol.

I can shed some light on this. I read on one of the blogs a few days ago (can't remember which) that someone had spoken with Wisconsin/Madison, and they'd said that they were meeting March 1st-ish to make decisions. The blogger said the person wasn't clear if that was to take the amount down to 30, or to make their final picks. Hope this helps!!

I was somehow misinformed about admission rates at Montana. I thought they took about ten percent of applicants.

I need to start working on next year's application strategy. Ugh.

University of Illinois is killing me! They accept fiction Wednesday then we hear nothing for poetry. IU is killing me! They accept a few people then we hear nothing! Pitt, Virginia, and Western Michigan are killing me! They haven't said anything yet!

I'd go throw myself into the pond out back but it's frozen over and would just take too much effort to chip a hole big enough for me to get through. Guess I'll just have to keep suffering!

Re: [idreamincursive] Vandy [In reply to] Can't Post

I applied to Vanderbilt, in fiction, so I don't necessarily think we're "rivals," although I wouldn't think we were if we shared the genre anyway. Applying to Vandy was a last-minute decision for me from the info off of TK's MFA blog about a free application and funding, but now it's easily in my top 2 or 3 choices. First and foremost, the available funding is amazing, and I like the idea of being a part of a young program with something to "prove."
