trying to put all of this out of my mind for now, but had a dream a couple nights ago that i got an acceptence phone call... and then a call right after that said it was a mistake. woke up unhappy.

time to start drinking.

I actually wait for the mailman to come every day-he probably thinks I'm some stalker or peeping tom, watching for him from my window and then running like a crazy person to the mailbox. I'm not a good waiter.

I just received an acceptance today from Chatham in Pittsburgh. It's not my first choice, but depending on the results of a couple of fellowship applications, it may become my first choice.

No word yet from Pitt, Penn State or Carlow (low-res). I expect another month or so for the first two, and I don't know how long for the last.

(Oh, and this is my first post, though I've been registered for awhile. Hello!)

There are really good reasons for dividing up the different conversations. Aside from making it difficult for others to find relevant information, do you really want to be commiserating with someone about getting rejected at Iowa when along comes Barb or Bob gushing about getting accepted into Iowa with full funding, a generous stipend and a book contract?

Please pay attention to the topic in which you are posting. I really hate to delete.

My apologies if my news from Chatham shouldn't have been mentioned in this thread (and thanks for the congratulations!). I'm still waiting on Carlow, but I got an e-mail saying I'd hear from them within two weeks. I'm also waiting on Pitt & Penn State, and from the response times I'm seeing in the blogs, I expect it'll be three to four weeks for Pitt, maybe longer for Penn State (and as I'm a PSU undergrad, I'm not holding my breath for that one).

I have a question to ease/increase the anxiety: Is anyone aware of a source for data on the number of MFA applicants to Pitt? I know that they only accept 7 in each genre, and of those, only two are selected for assistantships. I suppose I'm just looking for another reason to lose sleep between now & then....

Hi all,

Just wanted to mention that the 2008 Data Bank of MFA Application Response Times is now color-coded, because a lot of folks requested it and I think it will aid readability. Also, I'm working on adding schools for which data has never yet been accumulated, but which folks applied to this year. Keep in mind that any program not now listed will be listed immediately upon me seeing a response from that school, so if you think the list is missing a school, don't worry, as soon as an acceptance happens that school will be added.

I am in Pitts nonfiction MFA and this year there were 9 new MFA nonfiction candidates, and I think only 5 poets. I am a second year, and there are 7 in my year. I am not certain, but I think they actually accept like 15 (maybe a different number?) and then only half the people end up coming, because Pitt is notorious for being terrible with funding.

Hi asneth! I applied to Pitt for poetry; so, I don't know if you will be able to help me with my questions, but, here it goes:

My understanding is that Pitt usually funds two people from each genre, is that true?

For the people who do get funding, what form does it come in? TAships? Tuition remissions? Fellowships? Cash stipends?

What is the likelihood of figuring out a way to get funding from the university outside of the Creative Writing Department (ex. getting a TAship or GAship in another department)?

*Sighs* These are all things I should have looked into beforehand. I really like the looks of Pitt's program, but I didn't realize their funding situation until post-application. A friend of mine told me that she was offered full funding at Pitt; so, I took that to mean that Pitt has a fantastic funding situation. Lesson: word of mouth alone is not always sufficient.

as far as I know, every genre gives two ta positions. that is the only funding offered, except a fellowship (that requires two years of teaching) for a minority student each year but this is not for each genre, just the mfa program in general. That said, there are plenty of funded positions as professor's GSAs and such that are available but you have to find them, as in, Pitt doesn't offer them to you , you have to hunt them down. But most people that aren't funded are able to find some form of funding through looking for positions.

I'm in my third poetry workshop right now and looking to apply to poetry mfa programs when my nonfiction program is done. Pitt has a great program and the professors I've taken from (Dawn Lundy Martin, Ben Lerner and Tomaz Solomon) are great! Good luck!!

Thanks, asneth, for the info. Now, if I get a rejection, I will most definitely need to have a hole ready to crawl into!

I have applied for a number of fellowships, and though a TA would be nice, I'll be commuting from Punxsutawney, and I don't know if I can handle the time commitment. I haven't asked near enough questions about anything -- average number of days per week on campus is a biggie for me with a two hour commute.

I second that *sigh*!

I got home from work today and, as has been the case for the past few weeks, eagerly checked the mail. In my box was a large, manilla-sized envelope from the University of Oregon's admissions office. The bigger the better, right? After nearly falling my way up the stairs and fumbling my keys into the lock of my apartment, I got in and opened it...and it was just a letter saying my application and materials were being examined by my program. They were nice enough to send a housing brochure so I could look at places to live to a college I probably won't get into.

I sent my app in 7 weeks ago, so I just assumed that now, anything I get is news, one way or another. But today--nothing. BLARGH!!!

Yeah, when I was filling out some of the online applications I'd notice a box that was checked by default saying "Check here if you'd like the University of ______ to send you housing information." I think Oregon might've been one of them.

I always made sure to uncheck it for that very reason. Didn't want any false alarms. I feel for ya.

i go to a small, private school in Tennessee, and i'm the only graduating senior applying to MFA programs. its nice to read this and not feel so alone in the process. my professors are excited about my applying, but it scares the mess out of me... i'm only twenty-one, probably a thousand years younger than i'm supposed to be to go into these sorts of programs. and i have that secret feeling that i'm just good here in Tennessee, but my poetry is probably laughed at elsewhere. i do write about cottonfields.. oh god...i have a backup school in my pocket already, master's in literature, just in case i'm not good enough. i wasn't even going to try to get in, but then i just felt like i had to know, even if every one of the eight schools i applied to find my writing repulsive.
i applied at eight schools (is that less or more than normal? it was as much as i could afford)
Iowa, Virginia, Stonecoast, Boston, Vanderbilt, Alabama, John Hopkins, then my pocket school, Arkansas State.
my plans for rejections: a glass of wine, a bowl of ben&jerrys, a julia roberts movie
my plans for acceptances: a glass of wine, a bowl of ben&jerrys, a julia roberts movie with friends
