Jim Clark at UNC Greensboro says that they should know more about the out-of-state tuition waivers by Monday or Tuesday, so we might finally have answers soon. Overall I think their friendliness makes up for their incredibly slow process, but I imagine a lot of people have already accepted other offers.

I'm still waiting on funding so I'm keeping my options open... but George Mason is really fighting to make something happen for me, so I'm 95% sure I'll be there in the Fall. I've struggled with the decision but after visiting I think it's the right place for me. So that will open up a poetry spot at UNH and UNC Greensboro if anyone is waiting on spots for either of those. Oh, I also took myself off the Hollins waitlist so that might move someone up there, too.

I hate that it's down-to-the-wire though! I'd much rather have made my decision weeks ago! Anyone else still waiting on funding or still trying to make a final decision? This place has really quieted down over the last week or so. I really envy everyone who has it sorted out by now!

When I tried to get out of my seat, the reading had started, and I didn't want to offend.

Someone has since started leaving me death threats about being at the wrong place at the wrong time, with the wrong person, taking their place and some other incomprehensible bullshit.

...by the way, Orhan Pamuk has a nice head of hair.

Thanks for the helpful info on Greensboro. I hope the fact that I haven't heard anything is a sign that perhaps I am still in the running? Wouldn't they have rejected my application outright by now if that wasn't the case?

Has anyone heard anything from Notre Dame?

Also FYI to anyone on American's waitlist: a slot will open up in fiction as I'm not going to accept their offer of admission (based on an email last week saying that the small amount of funding available has been awarded and we should look elsewhere for $$$).

I got a rejection letter from Notre Dame about two weeks ago and one from Greensboro last week. :(

STILL waiting on Indiana, specifically, and a few other places that I know are farther behind in the process. I suppose I should bite the bullet tomorrow with Indy since it is April 9th....

I hadn't heard anything from Indiana either, so I emailed the secretary last week. Decisions have been made. The person to check with is Teresa Abney at tlabney@indiana.edu. She was very helpful (and nice) and said that I should have received a letter by now (I hadn't); and that I was not admitted.

Oh well. Maryland is looking better every day!

I'd say that you haven't heard is probably a good thing or at the least a high waitlist thing... though I highly recommend emailing someone to get your answer. Both Notre Dame and Greensboro were very nice and candid with me when I asked for my status (despite the rejection from Notre Dame... I did get my letter a few days after). I don't have an "official" acceptance from Greensboro because they're waiting on this waiver thing, but I was told I was in the "top 10" for poets so my guess is that if you're in the running Jim Clark will be willing to disclose your general position to you, like he did for me. The people at Greensboro ARE incredibly nice. But, holy shit, I wish that I knew if I was in or not so I could make a decision.
I'm still waiting on funding answers from Colorado and Montana. CSU hasn't gotten back to me about funding at all - but they sure have mailed me a lot of stuff about on campus houseing which is pretty unuseful for me.
Montana says they'll know soon.

I know it's not the admin's fault they can't figure the funding out - they have to deal with shit from the bigger grad school, but it's still mega annoying.

Thanks for the info, papichulo! I had to email Teresa a few months ago about a rec letter change, so it's good to know that she is the same "point-person" to talk to here.

I will chime in with everyone else to say that Greensboro has been extremely nice!

In what genre are you declining?

Also, on another note, one of my friends called ASU and they said that they were waiting to release a waiting list until the acceptance offers had come through. He also told me that he called Eastern Washington to discuss a letter from their financial aid office that said they could not process his FAFSA until he was admitted and to call. They told him that a few affers had been made but that his application was in a holding process by the department. We are still trying to figure out what it means to be in a "holding process," so if you have any ideas let me know so that I can pass it on.

Fiction... I think the "holding" pen is something that some schools keep just in case they exhaust their entire wait list. Tell your friend good luck.

I got off the fiction waitlist at Florida on Friday, so I'm happy that you got into better programs.

Did you accept anything yet or are you still waiting on possible Irvine news?

Confusion About New School's Notifications:

Dear Colleagues,
I am sorry if I am posting this in the wrong way - I only know how to "reply", not sure how to start a new message!

I would like to know if anyone else out there is confused about the status of their New School MFA application.

I applied (Poetry) and as of end of March had still not heard anything from them. So, I called them beginning of April. They said that my application was still "under review." So, I waited about a week, and e-mailed, and was told it was still "under review." Then today I telephoned again, and was again told that no decision has been made and my application remains "under review in the department."

Is this the same as being "wait-listed"? (Nobody from New School has mentioned the word "wait-list" to me.) I have seen that others on this electronic list have received definite rejections, acceptances, and wait-lists. How can my application still be under review this late? (I submitted it before the Jan. 15 deadline.)

I am really confused: can anyone offer any insight as to what might be going on? Should I anticipate that I will hear from them before April 15? (The person I spoke with on the phone did not offer a date by which a decision would definitely be made.)

The methods and madnesses of each school vary. Not every school has a rigidly defined waitless and even those that do often have a pool of candidates reserved beyond those notified as officially "waitlisted." If you haven't heard a definitive "no", take it as good sign. There are lots of good surprises still to come.

Irvine left a message but I'm trying to call them to get particulars about funding and teaching load. Iowa is offering a first year fellowship of $17,000, which means I don't have to teach at all my first year. I hear Irvine has you teaching comp right off the bat and you may have to teach every semester of your two years.

That's quite a fellowship at Iowa1 And cost-of-living is a factor too. I imagine that rents in California are at least twice as high as they are in Iowa. So do you a place to yourself or do you want to bunk with roomies?

I have talked to a number of current MFA students (two most notably are from BGSU) and the suggestion is you should live alone for at least the first year. Why? Because of space of course...unless you're the kind of guy who can write while Van Halen is being played in the background while GTA 3 is going non stop, good luck with the whole roommate thing. With 17 grand from Iowa you could live more than comfortably in your own place and never have to worry about eating three meals a day or how often you can crank the AC. My advice, not that I'm any good at it or anything, is to live alone. Forget trying to live as cheaply as possible, try living comfortably.
