I got a reply from UMass today, and it seems I'm pretty high on the waitlist, but their financial resources have been completely exhausted.

I thought I'd read that it would be pretty easy to obtain a TA position.

How strange and supremely disappointing.

Have you heard anything from cleveland state? I came across one of your posts a couple weeks ago where you mentioned that CSU was one of your schools, so your name sticks out in my mind. I have yet to hear anything back from them but noticed, via website, that they pushed back their deadline by one week. Thanks

Just an FYI on Greensboro: I'm not even sure if they've finished making decisions or looking at apps yet. Only because on Monday the 19th I got an email from Jim Clark asking why my application from the grad school was incomplete (was a snafu with GRE scores) and why it hadn't been forwarded to their dept. from the grad school.

Anyway, interestingly, this is the third school that I sent GRE scores to, that was kind enough to notify me that they didn't get them. At this point, I wonder if there were other schools that didn't find my GRE scores and just trashed my app because it was seen as incomplete?! I found out that this happened because I took the test abroad and there wasn't a place to enter in my US SSN in the registration. And many of these schools apparently just use the SSN to match up your GRE scores to your application. So a piece of advice for those of you applying: send a self-addressed, stamped post card to all the programs you apply to, or follow up with their program assistants to make sure they have received everything!

I got my rejection from Indiana in the mail yesterday (dated 3/15 on the letter), and I live in Western Michigan, so it probably got here relatively quickly.

I received my Indiana rejection in the mail today.

So, that's all my schools. Rejected from six, accepted to one--and I'm still shocked it was my top choice. I think that just shows how important it is to find a good fit. I knew the whole time that was the best fit (and was also told that by people familiar with the program). I'm still in waiting-land about funding though, and it's been nearly a month since I first heard from them. I'm almost ripping my hair out. Almost.

I'm in the same boat as you, nerdytina: one acceptance, five rejections, two still-waitings. I'm eager to say yes to my one acceptance--it's a program I like a lot--but still waiting to hear on funding from them.

Today I checked out U-Haul's Web site and saw it's going to cost $1500 to rent a truck to move 1000 miles. Yikes! I don't think I can afford that! And I'm thinking I can't wait until sometime in July to hear about funding. I mean, that's crazy! But what if I don't know until then? So many decisions, so little money to make it all work. Sigh.

Yes! I am completely freaking out about the cost of moving across the country. I have no idea how I'm going to move all my crap without a U-Haul though. I don't want to start completely over without anything. Luckily, my boyfriend is moving with me and we have quite a bit saved up (and might be able to afford it, might). But the city is going to be so much more expensive than where I am now, so we can afford the move but can we afford the first few months?

So stressful. I need some resolution. Do I get the funding, so I can stop worrying quite so much, or do I need to get three more jobs for the summer?

Ah well. More waiting.

I am almost ready to say goodnight to the MFA. Thank you for the update on the UW-Seattle situation. I doubt any appallingly great news is forthcoming with the thing about there only being 2 TA's.

Here's my tally, chronologically arranged:
University of Iowa - rejection (they obviously don't care if one of their recent MFA grads influenced me)
Columbia University - rejection (they obviously care that I spelled Philip Roth with two L's)
University of Chicago (MAPH, not MFA) - rejection (the real heartbreak) (apparently even when the acceptance rate is close to 25%, and even when I'm local, I'm still not good enough for them)
University of Oregon - rejection (very painful as well, but one of six fiction spots is hard to snag)

Let's assume that University of Washington - Seattle is a no go. (they obviously didn't find my quote from Thomas Mann about literature being a curse funny)

Which leaves University of Texas - Austin MCW as my final hope. Along with Oregon and Chicago, I really felt this was the best place for me. Others on this board have been rejected from this school, perhaps because they've received letters, perhaps because they've called their office. I still haven't heard anything and I don't want to hear anything for as long as possible!

I will hold out my hope, and I will pray that they will take mercy on me and give me a chance. Oh, a chance to live in Austin, oh, a chance for real funding, oh a chance for the apotheosis of the MFA ideal. I know the rankings mean shit, but Texas was #2 behind UC-Irvine? Hell yeah. That 250 word cap on their statement of purpose should be embraced by all. Who cares if you feel your purpose is to write and publish and teach? Duh! I remember meeting a girl at a party who went to U Chicago grad for public policy and did her undergrad at UT-Austin and I was all like, "Yo, do you think I'd fit in in Austin?" and she was like, "Yeah, totally."

I don't know what my destiny is, but if Texas wanted to be my destiny, I'd give them my blood. O+ is safe for all.

A good friend has just accepted an offer in poetry at UVA. That will free up a place at Indiana, Syracuse and Florida. Best of luck to all.

I have found the cheapest way to move is the box they drop off at your house (4' x 4' x 8'), you fill up and they move for you. You can get two or three boxes if you need them. Then, once you get there, they'll store it for you until you find an apartment. I've done it twice and it's been great. U-Haul is a bit of a scam, met thinks.

Also, I live in Seattle, and while it is not inexpensive, the renters market is very very good right now.

I just got my first non-rejection! I've been waitlisted for fiction at the West Virginia University! I'm just so excited... even if I don't make it in off the "short" waitlist I'm so happy that I don't have 11 flat out rejections. And with only Notre Dame left to hear from, this news is literally making me glow.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. I got a letter in the mail today. It was dated March 19th. The letter said that there was a short waitlist and that all decisions should be made by mid-April.

Thanks! Yup, it is in Morgantown. Hmm, I wish I could find out more information about this program.

I had a excellent fiction workshop with Mark Brazaitis last summer at the WV Writers Workshop in Morgantown. His writing is riveting, and his first collection of stories won the Iowa Short Fiction award. James Harms (the director of the MFA program) also directs the summer workshop. I interviewed him for an article that you can find here: http://www.toasted-cheese.com/ab/06-09.htm

It's more about the summer workshop than the program, but it might help give you the flava'.

Although it still involves more waiting, at least it is waiting for something, as opposed to not knowing what you're waiting for. I don't know if that makes sense. Congrats, again!

I also just received my first non rejection yesterday. Neil Connelly from McNeese State emailed me to say that he was still considering my application against a few other ones. Basically he asked me to tell him more about myself so he could make a better decision (no pressure there). I just emailed him back...so we'll see how that goes. I know the program is pretty under the radar, but the faculty's writing seems pretty in synch with what I'm trying to do. Any one that can tell me anything about McNeese or the Lake Charles area would be a godsend, I know it got hit pretty bad by Katrina or Rita, but anything else?

Congrats to all the other first time non-rejections! If nothing else comes of this at least now I don't feel like a complete idiot for applying to programs.

In other news, UNCW sent out a rejection email today. How do I know that? Because I got one! Good luck to those of you still holding out, I'm right there with you.

Okay, so who is in at Colorado State? Are you planning on going? What are you excited about?

I like the faculty quite a bit, and browsing the site just increases my desire to go… especially reading “the book.” I hope they decide on the rest of the GTAs soon.

I was accepted at McNeese State and do feel a lot of regret about not going (chose Wash. U. instead, for various reasons). It's certainly an under-the-radar program but I think it's very supportive; lots of close contact with the faculty, intimate, etc. Apparently you get loads of individual attention. Talking with Neil Connelly on the phone was a cool conversation, he seems very down-to-earth and not at all pretentious. I can't speak for Lake Charles first-hand ... from what I've been told, people are pretty up-front about it not being an ultra-charming little Vermont-type place, they do have industrial plants and casinos. But they also have beaches, that whole Louisiana vibe, and so forth. I wouldn't have been upset about living there at all.

It really does seem like a cool program. Good luck with it!

I'm also seriously considering Colorado State. I called to ask about teaching spots and was told they'd notified people already and that the second round of notifications for that would be at the end of the month after they'd received replies. It's like going through the application process all over again! I also got in to Arizona but that is looking less likely as an option because of the funding even though they have a comparable faculty. Is that a mistake, do you think?

I just got an email today from UNCW's grad school admin. person saying my application was complete. I wanted to roll my eyes and be like, "Yeah, I know 'cause you told me that on the phone a month ago and someone at the CW program emailed me 2 weeks ago. Now how's about that acceptance?!?"

Unfortunately, I'm (praying for but) not really anticipating an acceptance. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't secretly happy to get just another tide over email and not the real downer today.
