Re: UW-Seattle [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello. I've been lurking for a while. I have some info for UW-Seattle applicants who still haven't heard anything. I e-mailed the department because I needed to make a timely decision about another opportunity I have in Europe (non-writing related). They e-mailed me back yesterday.

Apparently they've notified everyone they intend to accept and, I assume, those who have been waitlisted. However, they haven't had many of their potential acceptees commit yet. They won't be sending out rejection letters just yet because they don't want to be put in the awkward situation of bumping someone up to the waitlist who they've already sent a rejection letter.

So, I suppose that's good news and bad news. There's still a chance that somebody out of the 350 poetry applicants this year (their number) will be bumped up to the waiting list. However, personally, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that I can begin planning for next year.

I talked to the secretary at Seattle yesterday, and she told me the same thing your e-mail did, except that she added that there's only two TA positions available this year, so no one on the waitlist will get funding. That might as well be a no for me-- Might be different for other people with more disposable cash.

Only two TA positions available this year?! Yuck! I've been accepted to UW and have just been waiting to hear about funding for the last three weeks. The person I talked to said I was likely to get one--but I didn't realize there were only two. I hope she wasn't just saying that about the TA-ship. Yikes!

My Tally [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't been around for a while because I needed to stop wallowing in misery and get back to living my life. Misery, however, continued arriving in my mailbox:

Iowa: Rejected
Michigan: Rejected
Amherst: Rejected
Michener: Rejected
Hopkins: Rejected
NYU: Waitlisted
Indiana: ?
Notre Dame: ?

So I'm waitlisted at NYU. Could I afford to go to NYU if I got in? Heck no! Why did I apply? No idea.

I am admitting defeat. My plan is to go live with my SO wherever he finds a job. I will try to get some kind of day job with good hours (teller at a bank? mail woman? let me know if you have any suggestions...) or settle for a crappy job on nights and weekends (preventing me from ever seeing my SO, who will have a day job). Le sigh.

Anyway, I will apply to nearby MFA programs and hope for the best. I am currently taking a poetry workshop with a real (published) poet, so I'll have a whole new manuscript by the end of the semester. Hopefully I can take it to the Indiana writer's conference. After the conference, I have a one week job working at a creative writing camp for kids (elementary school through high school). So by midsummer I hope to have a) a polished portfolio and b) all new, much better recommendations. And I'll have to write a new personal statement (which makes me want to scream, because I HATE writing personal statements).

For those who have admitted (or been forced to admit) defeat: what are your plans for the coming year?

Re: [thera] last person to hear from Amherst? [In reply to] Can't Post

haha that's how i felt for a very long time. Then my mom called and said that I'd got the letter and she thought it was a rejection- she couldn't remember if she actually read it.

So then I asked to double check and she couldn't find it for another 24 hours...fitting isn't it?

I know there was some talk yesterday about weird UW summer classes emails. I got one of those too. The very weird part? I never applied to UW. I never even contacted them about possibly applying. I'm actually wondering how the hell they got my email address because I haven't applied to any Washington state school (I live in Washington) and would never in a million years go to UW because I'm a WSU Cougar through and through....

Now I'm wondering who tipped them off about my desire to go to an MFA program... Creepy.

Re: [Arkinese] UW-Seattle [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmm, that is very weird indeed. Are there any ways that you can think of that they might have procured your email? Maybe writing conferences or workshops? Do schools share information about applicants with each other? Are they even allowed to without your authorization?

Here is my head scratcher/conspiracy theory MFA moment. A few weeks back, the Dept. Chair for one of the programs that I applied to called to offer me congratulations and a spot in the program. I was pleased as punch. We chatted for a little bit, and as we were wrapping up, the dept. chair said something to the effect of, "Well, I hope you choose us, but it looks like you have a lot of schools to hear back from." I didn't ask for clarification at the time, but it definitely caught my ear. They didn't say something generic and broad like "You probably have other schools you're looking to hear back from as well." I wouldn't have thought twice about something like that. Although person's exact words escape me, I got the distinct impression that they knew the other schools where I'd applied. Curious, I looked back at the school's online application, and there was indeed a slot where they asked what other schools I applied to. Thing is, I'm pretty certain I would have left that blank as I don't see why a school would need to know that (and if I had filled the slot, I would have just named one or two other schools). My actual application was locked, so i couldn't check to see for sure. I can't think of any other way that they would know. The only possibility I can think of is my GRE scores, and if ETS sent a list of all the schools where I'd sent my scores to be reported.

It's not really a big deal to me if a school knows where I've applied, though I'd prefer if schools have access to that sort of information that they be up front about it. At the time that it happened, I sorta felt like I'd caught the chair letting something slip. But, hey, I'm an imaginative kind of guy. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe the chair just worded things strangely. Makes you wonder, though

Re: [JKicker] last person to hear from Amherst? [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah I finally got my Amherst rejection in the mail after calling them last week. I haven't been around in forever, mostly due to frustration and also because I went home to Boston for Spring Break, but I've heard from three of six...

UMass-Amherst - rejected
New Hampshire - rejected
Emerson - accepted!

Arizona State - unknown
Indiana - unknown assumed rejection
Bowling Green - unknown

Unfortunately Emerson's funding is slim to none. I haven't heard personally, but I'm sure it will be zero. Most likely though I'll still go and pay my way. I'm 22, this is my first year of applying, and got into a good program. Besides, I hate my current MA program, so bye bye Ohio!

I realize most people say hell no to paying for your MFA, but oh well...I can't pass this up. I probably won't be lurking around anymore, but good luck to everyone! Ploughshares here I come!

ECP, congrats on Emerson! I say, if your heart's set on it, pay some, just try not to get mired in debt. I don't mind TAing and working PT for a good program. I'd just be concerned about 10s of 1000s more in debt. But then, I'm a lot older than you and have made no dent in my undergrad debt, given years of un- and underemployment. Do what you have to do and feel comfortable with. If borrowing gives you 2 years to write, so be it. If borrowing and working 4 PT jobs will distract you, it's not the best plan. Weigh all that carefully.

I assume the same is true for those who applied in fiction. Waiting on news from these last few schools has been excruciating, even though I presume it's going to be all rejections from here on out. I wish Seattle would just say yes, no, or maybe. Or at least acknowledge me with a wave.

Not sure how much this information helps, but I called Irvine yesterday and they said "Letters will be mailed out by the end of this week."

So something definitive soon! Which is good. Even if it's rejection.

Re: [thera] last person to hear from Amherst? [In reply to] Can't Post

So I just returned from abroad to find precisely one letter from the nine schools I applied to. After going over this message board I decided to email UMass-Amherst, but is there anyone else who hasn't received anything from

--Michigan
--Syracuse
--John Hopkins

I've gathered more than a few haven't heard from

--Brown
--UCI
--NYU
--UW-Seattle

But I thought I was in my bounds to call the first few, since they seem to have informed everyone. For the amount of money applications cost, at the very least I deserve a piece of paper saying I'm not good enough. At the very least.

I don't know about Michigan and Syracuse, but there are people who have not yet heard from Johns Hopkins for fiction.

Apparently they're still in the process of making decisions. Someone on another site (http://mfaincreativewriting.blogspot.com/) called the program the other day and was told that they were hoping to wrap things up this week.

Um, has anybody heard from greensboro?
I looked at my online status & it says under departmental review, and then it says that my application is “grad non-admit” what the hell does that mean?
P.S. brown doesn't notify rejections, i gather.

my application page (UNCG) says the same thing. since it says that the application is still under departmental review -- I think that the application type is just a weird way of saying that it's an application that hasn't had a decision made on it yet -- Anyway, until my application status changes to 'decision made' or something like that, I'm not counting UNCG as a rejection.

I posted this info a while ago, but Jim Clark at UNCG said decisions would be made by the 15th. I expect that means they had their last discussions that day, and that letters or something will be going out soon.

Also... anyone still waiting on Indiana, Catherine Bowman told me today (because I finally asked about status via email) that "letters went out last week". So for those of us who haven't heard yet, we'll know for sure (prob. rejections at this point) soon.

strangelet,
Have you heard anything from cleveland state? I came across one of your posts a couple weeks ago where you mentioned that CSU was one of your schools, so your name sticks out in my mind. I have yet to hear anything back from them but noticed, via website, that they pushed back their deadline by one week. Thanks
