Re: [SaraBellum] advice? [In reply to] Can't Post

I received a letter from Western Michigan dated 2/27 informing me that I'm waitlisted. It was a friendly letter that ended with an invitation to call or email to check my status. So I did. After three days without a reply, I called again and left a follow-up message. Still no response. Has anybody else been waitlisted at WMU? Any luck getting more info?

WMU Wait List [In reply to] Can't Post

Mainer,

Don't even bother calling Western Michigan; it is *impossible* to get any information over the phone. I know this because I called about 3 or 4 times and no one could give me any information on my application status. I finally got my wait list letter in the mail last week (it was originally sent to the wrong address), but I before I received the letter I was able to get a hold of the Grad Director via e-mail: gatarbox (at) yahoo (dot) com. Don't ask me why she has a Yahoo address; it strikes me as very unprofessional.

Overall, I am very disappointed by the administration at WMU. For a program that is not ranked very highly, they should be more responsive to potential students. If I do get in off the waitlist, I will definitely not attend WMU.

Re: [waiting] Idaho [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I was born in Moscow, ID where the school is located. My parents and aunt and uncle are all alums of their undergrad programs and I have a cousin who currently attends the undergrad engineering program there. It's a nice looking campus and I've only heard murmurs about the program, mostly through one of my recommenders who did his PhD with one of the MFA profs. I'm really interested in hearing back from them as I love the area, but I did have a lot of concerns about funding.

Congrats on your other programs, especially since you already have funding offers! They're also in great areas. I too was rejected from Cornell, Michigan, and Syracuse and I have yet to hear anything from five other programs, including Idaho. Good luck as you keep moving forward. Right now I'm just trying to keep my chin up. I have a friend in graduate admissions at Arizona State who says that everything happens in waves and sometimes no news is good news because you're still in the running.

I got a voice mail from Robert Wrigley at U of Idaho this morning. I talked to him for awhile this afternoon, and then his wife (Kim Barnes) for 45 minutes. They both really sold me on the program, which might end up breaking my heart because I'm one person out of the money for funding.

Don't despair if you haven't heard yet. I'm at the beginning of the alphabet!

More MFA dreams [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, although I've been accepted to my favorite program, the MFA dreams are still coming. I blame this on still waiting to hear about funding--and expecting rejections from the rest of the schools I applied to.

I've received three things in the mail confirming my acceptance, an email, and phone calls. However, I dreamt last night that I got a letter saying, "We've decided to reject you. We found numerous errors in your statement, including three misuses of the word truly." What? Then it went on to praise my work and tell me places to try to get it published. Still, they didn't want me.

When will this all be over?

***edited to say: I received a rejection in the mail from Colorado State today (poetry). The letter was very short with a signature image, not a real signature. However, there was also a form attached "Notification of Application Denial" with possible reasons for being denied (test scores, or missing materials, etc.) and check boxes beside each reason. My checked reason was exactly what the letter said, there are limited spaces available. However, it did have a real check mark made in real pen ink, and an actual signature.

It doesn't bother me since I already know what I want to do, but I thought the additional form was very odd.

I'm going crazy over here! They've known since February, and supposedly sent out the letters at the end of last week, and here it is Thursday and nothing? Arrrgh! I'd be a little less testy if their application deadline wasn't Dec. 15th. Does it really take three months to wrap up this application foolishness? And are they not calling this year?

Deep breaths. Brown and Indiana, sheesh. Indiana at this point is a month later in notification than it was last year...I think? They must send rejection letters via Pony Express.

Hi There,

I can confirm that Montana made it's decisions on March 9th. (I know because the director sent out her annual "who wants to help out with the new folks" e-mail to us current MFA'ers). I'd happy to answer any questions about the program (it rocks) or town (it rocks) for any who are interested. Also, if you find yourself antsy while waiting to hear something, you can check out the kinda silly unofficial montana MFA website which was mentioned in the October 13th issue of Poets & Writers: http://www.montanamfa.org.

Good luck all!

Re: [Mainer] advice? [In reply to] Can't Post

Info from Western Mich is that people on the wait-list can either be accepted because someone else turns down an offer, or because the program is allocated more funding from the university. That's how I understand it. I'm pretty sure the program only accepts people they're able to fund, and it sounds like they might accept more people on the waitlist should they get more money from the Univ. Don't rely on this info 100 percent, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Re: [nerdytina] More MFA dreams [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm waitlisted at Columbia and it was sort of an emotional experience -- I was reluctantly opening a skinny Columbia letter, certain of rejection, only to find two sheets inside and realizing I was waitlisted. So I was really, really hopeful when I found two sheets in the skinny Colorado State envelope -- only to find a two sheet rejection (1st page form letter, 2nd page checkmark just like Nerdytina's).

I haven't posted in a couple of months -- but here's my tally so far. (for Fiction)

Denied:
Cornell
Iowa
Johns Hopkins
Colorado State

Waitlisted:
Geo Mason
Columbia

Total silence:
UVA
NYU
UNCW
UNCG
American

Congrats to everyone who has gotten good news over the past 6 weeks!

U of Florida [In reply to] Can't Post

Has anyone received a rejection or waitlist notification from the University of Florida?

The first acceptances in fiction and poetry were reported March 5-6. So, I guess it's entirely possible that rejection letters simply haven't been printed yet.

I'm just curious to see if I have one of those rejection letters on the way, or if I've possibly been waitlisted, and I don't have all afternoon to try and actually reach somebody in their office.

Re: [muttonfish] More MFA dreams [In reply to] Can't Post

Muttonfish,

I've gotten two emails from UNCW - the first one came on 2/27, a little more than a month after I mailed everything in - it listed all of the things they had received from me (trancripts, GREs, writing sample etc) and then said that my application is now complete and ready for review. On 3/5 I got a second email directly from the MFA program saying that they're reviewing my application, that they expect to receive 250 applications and to accept 20-25 students, and that this will take until April. I didn't call or email them or anything so I assume this goes out to everyone. They did mail back the "we've received everything" postcard that I sent in with my stuff right away - that came at the beginning of Feb.

Strangely - my UNCG postcard just showed up. But it didn't have a date stamp or anything on it from the post office -- it just had a weird scribble from a pen across the stamp.

Anyway - good luck with UNCW. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Last Sunday (3/11) I received this email from Terry Kennedy of UNC Greensboro:

Dear Storyends,

Thanks for your application to the MFA Writing Program at
UNC-Greensboro.

I wanted to let you know that your writing sample is with the admission
committee. Our process here is a slow one, so don't hesitate to contact
us if you start getting acceptance pressures from other schools or if
you simply just want an update.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to write me back.

Best,

terry

So, people waiting on UNCG, take heart. Seems they like to take their sweet time with these apps, and they realize it. BTW, I turned in my app the day before the deadline, so that probably has a bit to do with the lag as well.

I spoke to people at UNC Greensboro, and they said that acceptances will be decided by the third week in March. (Which is this week.) And I think notifications will go out next week.
They won't know about funding for a few days, which may cause a delay.

Anyway, I thought they were super nice and helpful and not at all like Minneapolis who misspelled my name on the rejection! (I'm sure Therea will be very sad she didn't get picked.)

StoryEnds, I was told decisions would be made for UNC Greensboro by the 15th. Not sure if that means released by the 15th or just made by then. At least you know if you're still in consideration that you made it through the first round of reading. At least that's what Jim Clark seemed to be implying when I spoke with him on the phone at the end of February.

Good luck!

Seriously, I bumped them way up my list because of the friendliness factor. He said they received 300 applicants and I can't imagine they made Jim Clark call a huge number of people considering he was calling for all genres. I imagine we'll see acceptances posted soon.

To all who have posted in this topic and others,

Thank you for being my late night addiction over these past weeks. I confess I've been a lurker. I applied to MFA playwrighting programs and that took me into MFA writing territory with my applications to Michener and Brown. I've been rejected by both loves, alas. The other schools I've applied to are in Theater Departments which are not the focus of this board. Anyway, I have learned so much by coming and reading and rejoicing and commiserating with all of you. I shall continue to lurk because I'm eager to see where you all end up or how you play on from here. I've been so grateful for this odd, temporal community.
