Arkinese, I'm pretty sure that ND has notified all of their acceptances. I believe someone said on another website that letters should be out in early April.

Re: The Waiting Game...Have you heard yet??? [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, so I am getting extremely nervous and aggitated, and feeling hopeless and everything else imaginable.

I have been outright rejected at: Iowa and Michener

Presumed rejections (this a much longer list) NYU, New School, Oregon, UCR, Florida, UWashington, LSU. With all these schools sending out acceptances already (at least reported) I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that they are rejections.

I am waiting on SFSU which seems like my only true hope at this point.

Last year I was waitlisted and then accepted at Emerson, and accepted at San Jose State. I liked both schools but was not overly thrilled with situations I would be put in financially. I figured if I had that another year to just concentrate on my writing (poetry) and more time for my application that I would yield some better results, but seems like I just waisted a year. I don't want to regret turning down spots at those schools but right now I am kicking myself.

Sorry, just venting. I am a pessimist by nature and I really have nothing to look forward to. swell- I dont think i could go through the process a third year, not so much myself but having profs write all those recs, its embarassing- Im sure they are sick of me by now.

Oh, thanks, harja. I wonder how I missed that. I guess I read that and then breezed on down to UCI and thought "Well, no one heard there..." So the good news is tempered with more bad news. Better change my list. :)

Anyone waiting on FIU, my professor has notified me that they will be meeting March 29th to make a decision for acceptances.

It's a great school, I'm crossing my fingers.

ohh yeah and I am waiting of FIU but i keep getting calls/emails about missing materials for my application. weird because I called and had other verification that it was completed (and then get another email saying its not) so at this point I dont care- either its complete or its not. whatever.

other than the office blunders, seems like a fun school. Miami is a great city-

Hey stella, what genre are you? I got into Emerson also (fiction). They didn't give me any money, though I can't say I was really expecting it since I applied with a sort of makeshift writing sample - I'll admit that I'm fairly new to writing fiction. Did you get any funding?

In Reply To
ECP, it's looking like Emerson for me, too, unless UNCW emails me with hugs and kisses. Go where you're wanted, right? Has Emerson given you any dough?

Hey all, I'm new to this blog, but I have really enjoyed reading (and identifying) with everyone's jitters. I am still waiting on the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, CU Boulder, and Boston University - I'm guessing no one has heard from any of those yet? I also saw some posts from people accepted to CalArts. Heard from them last week and was pretty excited. Just wondering if anyone knows how many people they accept for the Creative Writing? It would be great to be in touch with those of you who are considering going there!

Hi Keg, I've been trying to find that out, too. Haven't seen anything online about the size, nor in the books they sent (which I haven't finished reading yet, so maybe it's in there).

Feel free to send me a private message, it would be great to know some people before school starts. Still no idea if I'll have other offers or funding, but there is something comforting about planning for one outcome right now. It doesn't appear that the program is ranked, but that immediately meant a lot less to me when I thought about going home and being able to do interdisciplinary work.

Indiana [In reply to] Can't Post

So I spoke to Teresa at Indiana today to find out when they will be sending out their letters. She said that all the letters should arrive this week. What about phone calls, I asked her, have all the phone calls been made? And she said no, there were still phone calls to be made this week. So I'm assuming these phone calls are more waitlist candidates since the MFA Handbook website says that there have already been the acceptance calls.

My Michener status page still hasn't changed yet either. It's distracting not to have a denied, but it has said that my materials have been fwded for a while now. Is anyone else waiting with an unchanged page?

Re: [t.ruby] UMass Rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

t.ruby,
i got in to emerson for nonfiction, but now i'm wishing i had applied for fiction, because my big nonfiction project that i kind of pitched to them in my personal statement is losing steam. but it sounds like you can do cross-genre stuff there, to a degree, so it might be perfect for me. that is, except for the money. i got an email from grad admissions that said the funding notifications went out last week, but as people turn them down to go elsewhere, the funding gets re-awarded, sometimes well into the spring. where else did you apply (i think you posted this earlier but i couldn't find it)?

UVA & next year [In reply to] Can't Post

Man, I am seriously thinking of gluing my fingers together to keep me from calling UVA to ask what's up. I'm trying to play it like UVA is a guy I really like: act cool! you have other, more important things going on! you are not desperate!!! But I may break down at some point. I feel ill.

The good thing about thinking you're rejected is that it makes you realize where you really want to go. I felt bad about Cornell, but Michener? Iowa? Eh. Water off a duck's back. Guess I didn't really want to go there.

So I've started thinking about next year, what I'd do differently--maybe it's a little too soon to discuss this, but I think I'd pay A LOT more attention to the personal statement and in the cohesiveness of the work I choose to include in my sample. Rather than worrying about "range," I'd try to present myself as an unusual, interesting person with some catchy hook that will make admissions committees eager to see more. (for example, unusual life experiences, where I come from socially, culturally.) I'd really consider the whole package that I'm giving them, and the impression of myself that is compiled from the statement, sample, school records, etc.

Anybody else thinking about next year?

I'm definitely thinking about next year. I'm trying to find some interesting programs that I didn't look into this year. I'm also excited that I found this message board and will have the input and support of other people trying to do the same thing as me-- especially people who might be on their second/third time around. I feel much more prepared... if anything, this has been a wake up call and has taught me that I can, in fact, handle rejection without falling to pieces.

So did you accept the offer to Emerson? I didn't get any Email about funding packages, but could it be because I haven't confirmed my attendance yet?

As for your other question, I applied to Iowa, Purdue, and Johns Hopkins. Quite lofty aspirations, and I can't say I really expected to get in anywhere at all. I applied to each place based on location more than anything, except of course for Iowa.

Irvine, etc. [In reply to] Can't Post

No word yet on Irvine or any other school. I had a relatively short list--I applied to six schools in fiction--but so far they're all mum.

My list:
Irvine
Arizona
Riverside
SF State

and, well, the other two don't matter because I don't think I'd attend them, even if I did get in. It's my first round of applications, but I'm already thinking ahead to 2008.

I have equal parts dread and excitement when approaching the mail--dread that I'll get a rejection letter, and excitement when I get an RSVP. Yep, I'm also planning a wedding right now.

What was I thinking???

I have no idea about wait-list etiquette.. I am on the "very short" waiting list (don't know what that means) at UF, and I just wrote back and thanked them, said that it was wonderful news and that I was looking forward to hearing from them. I feel strange about asking any questions when I am not actually accepted yet. I would very much like to know how short that list is, though!

Your job sounds so incredible...I don't know if I can give you any advice, but I probably won't be accepted this year so if you need me to take over your job off the coast of Maine, let me know!

Montana update [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi everyone,
I just called Montana and received an update from the friendly office administrator. I learned the following:
1. "First Acceptances" will be called or emailed starting this week and into next week. I'm assuming that means those with funding...?
2. Further acceptances will be notified by letters sent/or received next week (not too clear on that detail)
3. "Non acceptances" will be notified by letters received in the last week of March.

After six straight rejections (Cornell, Michigan, Syracuse, Minnesota, Alabama, and Texas, in fiction, and UMAss on the way), I'm not holding out any more hope for good news this year. The Montana lady did tell me that if I needed an admissions decision she could tell me right then, but after my last phone rejection (Alabama, my top choice) I'm not too keen on hearing the bad news so quickly. But alas, I am determined to continue onward and reapply next year! Not to Michigan though, next year I will take my "exceptionally well prepared and compelling" application (and $65) elsewhere.
Cheers and good luck everyone!
