I'm not even sure if they evaluate poetry and fiction separately. Maybe they don't, since it's a PhD in Creative Writing, not in fiction or poetry. I imagine it would be difficult to make selections across genres.

Re: [franz] 2010 PhD Responses [In reply to] Can't Post

I broke down and called Denver just a moment ago. First called the graduate studies dept and she could only tell me that my file was still under review. Then she connected me with the English dept to see when final decisions would be made. The person I spoke with in the dept said they were still in the process of finalizing decisions and would probably send out "letters of acceptance and letters of regret" next week.

Bah. Always gettin' the run around :-P

I decided to follow Sic's lead, so I broke down and called Utah today. Apparently, the last of the acceptance letters were sent out on the 25th. The rejection letters should be sent out this week. Since I'm assuming it shouldn't have taken 2 weeks for a letter to go from SLC to me, I'm guessing I'll be getting my rejection letter this week.

At least the waiting is almost over.

I'm wondering the same thing about waiting lists—specifically if Utah, Cincinnati, or (maybe even) Ohio have made them. I have to think Utah and Cincy have—unless they play the sad "secret waitlist" game.

Yeah I bet they have informed the wailist folks. Last year Loaf (from the forum) received waitlist notice in late February via snail mail and a status change via the website. I have said a sad goodbye to Utah...

Oh I think someone who got into OU off the wailist last year was notified via snal mail in mid to late March that he/she was on the waitlist. Still hope there!

Cincinnati will, I think, tell you if you're on a waitlist. I knew. Both years.

Utah, I think, did tell someone on the boards last year (loaf?).

So, I'd expect sort of secret rather than super secret.

I asked her on the phone about a wait list, but she didn't seem to know what I was talking about. So, either Utah doesn't have one or the person I was talking to didn't have all of the information.

Anyone else notice the Binghamton Masters acceptance posted for 5 March on gradcafe? That seems a little early for a 15 Feb due date...

Maybe the Masters stuff is done on a different time line...

Anyone hear anything?

Thanks everyone!

@Les Yes, if you read this entire thread you will notice that this is my third year applying, and first acceptance into a creative PhD. So—multiple years can work!

Congrats, bktv!

Re: [sicofelephants] 2010 PhD Responses [In reply to] Can't Post

any current/past Milwaukee rejects who can testify to something interesting in the rejection letter? It says if I want more information on the decision they made on my application, I can contact Tasha Oren at ###. I looked her up and apparently she's big into pop culture/film studies. I did, in fact, try to sell myself as a pop culture studies kid, and my critical writing sample was relevant to those interests.

Soooo...my question is, do you guys think (or know from experience) that they might actually give specific feedback on individual applications? Better yet, it seems, from a professor in your area of interest? That is mega awesome of them if that's the case. I'll prob give her number a try tomorrow and see what it's all about.

I was just accepted to Milwaukees PhD program via snail mail. Wait-listed for funding. I applied to the MA program and they upgraded me to the doctoral program. Im kind of taken aback by the offer, but Ill probably do an MFA first even if I do receive funding. My letter also says I can contact Tasha if I have any questions.

yeah I just emailed her and they must use her as a catch-all/general point of contact because she asked what track I applied to so she could direct me to the right person. I know Liam is the face of the creative writing program, and I've had a hell of a time trying to get a hold of him, and I don't expect he'll suddenly be eager to respond to me now.

Oh well! It was worth a shot.

Just popping in to say that Tasha is the DGS here at UWM. You're correct in assuming that she would be a contact point for all prospective applicants. Also, I'm a little confused by your post, Forum Apps. Do you have a Master's level degree in something else? There are no BA to PhD options across any of the disciplines at UWM. Thus, even the lit/modern studies/comp/etc students must either have an external Master's or enter in our own MA program. It's the same for the CW PhD. In fact, they have an entire academic review requirement at the end of the first year of doctoral study to look at the knowledge students bring in with them from their Master's. As far as I know, nothing has changed about this!

The letter says:

"It is my pleasure to inform you that the Graduate Policy Committee has recommended your admission to the doctoral program in English, pending formal notification from the Graduate School."

I already did a semester of graduate study, but I don't have an MA degree. Hmm. Maybe it is just a mistake? I'm going to send them an e-mail now.

Congrats, Aaron. Either way, Milwaukee seems like a cool program!

Also, I think it's funny that I just got an email from Iowa, saying I have been accepted off the waitlist (into the critical PhD). It's not funny, exactly—just in light of earlier comments in this thread about whether it was harder to get into a critical or creative PhD. Obviously, I'm only one case, but this is my first time applying to critical PhDs and my third! time for creative PhDs. With critical PhDs, I think a large % of the applicants are trying to go straight from BA to PhD, and pick up an MA along the way.
