Yay loaf! That is such great news! What genre are you in? I'd love to chat with you about the program if/when you're up to it. I've done a bunch of research, and I spoke with a first year PhD student there already. I'll be happy to share the info I have with you.

Just got a letter from Utah. I'm on the waitlist. But I will probably go to Milwaukee, since it's closer to home. I'll hop off the waitlist for others' sake as soon as I know the rest of my options. But wanted to let y'all know that they're starting to notify.

Thanks for the info, loaf…and congrats once again! It's good to hear some concrete news about Utah, dear, dear Utah. Did they mention how many people they waitlisted, how many applied, or anything like that?

Re: [theootto] [In reply to] Can't Post

The letter didn't mention numbers, but it did say "short list" and included a list of grad courses for the fall and contact info for current students, which I thought was a nice touch.

Good luck to everyone who's still waiting. I still have 7 schools to hear back from, too.

loaf,
One (last) annoying question: does your "Track your application" status say "waitlisted?" Or is it the same "Out to the department" or whatever it was originally?

If you're not sure and don't feel like checking, no worries! Seriously.

It says Waitlisted. I didn't even think to check that before you asked!

Thanks for checking!

Mine still says out to the department--which probably means i'm a no-go…unless the fiction stuff isn't finalized yet. I think, tho', it's time to relinquish 95% of the remaining hope. I feel freer already. ;-)

Re: [graygirlwaiting] What PhD programs have reported??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Good question! It sounds like people have heard from:
Milwaukee
FSU
Ohio U
Missouri
Texas Tech
S. Miss
UIC
Cincinatti
Utah
Georgia
USC

Any others I missed? And has anyone heard anything from Houston or Western Michigan? Those are the only two on my list I haven't heard from yet (or heard that someone else has heard from)...Also, has anyone heard about waitlists/rejections from FSU? I'm assuming the first round of people are all in, but I am eager to cross it off my list if it's a no-go.

I have a friend waiting to hear from Illinois State and Albany too. I don't think she's heard any news from them either.

Two more you might add to that list: I don't think anyone's heard from Tennessee or Georgia State either.

I was waitlisted at Tennessee a few days ago. First round acceptances went out a week or so ago, and they only accept 2 writers--total. Boo.

And I'm waiting to hear from:

Denver
Albany
Western Michigan
Louisiana

I applied to Tenn, UGA, Nebraska, FSU, Ohio U (fiction) and haven't heard a thing from any of them. Looks like Tenn's bust. And with Ohio only accepting one (!) each genre that race looks tight.

The final answers should all roll in the next coupla weeks.

I'm at TN right now, doing an MA in Lit. Last year's incoming PhD class had two poets and one fiction writer. In theory, I think they'd like to accept two in each genre, but it just depends on how many PhD spots get taken by Lit. and Rhet./Comp. The total PhD class is 10-11.

I just got a rejection from Western Michigan. Really want to hear about Nebraska, because that might tempt me away from Milwaukee. Also waiting to hear from Denver, Ohio U, Cincinnati, and UNLV.

Seth's TSE was spot on for Nebraska and FSU last year. I applied to both and heard from those programs exactly when I thought I would. (one acceptance, one non-acceptance, both by letters). I'm too lazy right now to look it up! This is my third round of grad apps, and I just can't seem to work up the same level of neurosis anymore. The bloom has faded from the rose.

I'll just keep gathering Bed Bath and Beyond coupons until I hear otherwise. If I get bad news, I can cheer myself up with new towel rack. After all that money I've given to ETS I need the 20% off.

Is anyone else continuously getting these graduate newsletters from Nebraska? They're. driving. me. nuts.

Anyway, to repeat to various bits of information that have woven their way into my brain: Nebraska's department secretary has told people over the phone that they should look out for an email starting the week of 3/9. Also, the letters for the rest of us from Utah probably went out this past Friday.

loaf, did your online status change to rejected? I spoke with someone with a rejection in lit who said her status is exactly the same. Which means I've been checking it for no reason. Heh.

They really don't have to sell me on the program. I'm sold! I'm sold!

Nope, no status change online. I usually don't even bother checking, because it makes me crazy. I'd rather have a letter or email. When I was applying for MFA programs, I always got a phone call to notify my acceptance...weird that it's not the same for PhD.

seriously.

I thinking about how awful it would be if, post-rejection from Nebraska, i continued to get those dear newsletters.

On the Utah front, it would be nice to get something concrete. Sigh.

Re: [theootto] What PhD programs have reported??? [In reply to] Can't Post

*one paragraph of moping* I'm starting to lose hope over getting into USC PH.D in fiction. I know how absurdly low their acceptance rate is, and it appears that they already accepted their fiction writers (though I can't seem to locate an actual person from 2009 in fiction); this coupled with the fact I'm in Argentina and it takes mail even longer to get here than it does in Chicago, it looks really bleak. And that's a huge bummer because I would have loved to study with TC boyle, Aimee Bender, Marianne Wiggins + Percival Everrett, not to mention being close to my mom in SoCal. Sad times. . .

This leaves FSU (Ph.D) and NYU + UC-Davis (M.A.). Considering I haven't heard a single response any of the four schools and I have a MFA from a good school, several publications, I can speak two foreign languages and I have a tons of lit classes, I swear to god I could scream at the top of my lungs because there's absolutely no guarantees for the application process. Wait, I already did that.

I hope you guys hear from your schools soon, and have many acceptances, because I haven't heard anything and it's driving me fucking insane! Suerte Chicos!

Sing it, Jacksonbliss!

I live in SoCal now, and am trying to convince myself that those alleged USC accepted fictioneers don't actually exist. USC's just taking their sweet time this year--no need to rush--and they'll call you and me when they're good and ready. Excellent plan, Ms. Bender, excellent plan.

Yeah, i haven't heard a thing from any of my programs. (Except for the damn Nebraska newsletter.)

Hang in there!
