To anyone who applied at Tennessee, first-round acceptances were made last Friday via phone. Second round decisions will be made next Monday. This info is from the department secretary.

How'd you find out, chitown?

Applying to Tennessee is like playing the lottery. Last year, the grad director told me that they accepted 1-2 creative writers--total. Or maybe it was 1-2 per genre. She told me "1...maybe 2."

Either way, very low odds.

Yeah, I doubt I'll get in. LesK- I called and asked the secretary this afternoon. She had an accent that made me miss Tennessee.

I'm pretty sure I won't get in either...I don't think I've ever seen a report of a UTK acceptee on this fora or any of the blogs, and I’ve seen USC, Houston, and Missouri more than once the last two-three years.

Sorry to hear that...everyone sounds stripped of optimism today. Same here. My heart sank when I saw the MA acceptance to Cincy on Seth's blog and I've failed thus far to buoy it....maybe this can be the spur to convince me to write a novel at long last.

Yeah, that MA acceptance to Cincy has me worried as well. Then again, it's an MA acceptance. It probably takes longer to decide on PhD applications for many programs, since it's a bigger investment to admit a PhD candidate than an MA or MFA candidate--at least that's what I'm telling myself, haha.

Thanks for the info. Tennessee was a bit of a wildcard for meI didn't know what to expect or how many students got accepted, but I did find a page that lists the incoming PhD class for '06-'07, and it shows ten total students (I'm assuming across all of the three PhD tracks). So that probably means a max of 2-3 creative PhDs.

Georgia (via Grad Cafe) has notified
Missouri has notified
Tennessee has notified

For me that only leaves Nebraska and Georgia State.

Sigh. I already have a list for next year.

Me too....and if anyone has any idea how to convince my wife that Nebraska (or Southern Cal for that matter) is an awesome place to live, I'm all ears.

bktv, I've got my fingers crossed for you at the other two schools. Who knows, could up being the best scenario for you...(that's what I'm hoping with those that remain).

USC [In reply to] Can't Post

WHOA. I spoke too soon. Got a call from USC last night and I'm in! I really had nearly given up after someone posted that acceptance last week on Seth's blog.

Re: [LesK] USC [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I can't speak from personal experience, as I've never done more than fly through LA. But I imagine that, once you get past the smog and traffic, LA offers everything that any other major city would (you just can't take public transportation to get there). I'm not actually a big city person - so being able to hop out to Joshua Tree or up the coast on Highway 1 really entices me. I lived in San Francisco for two years and have loads of family there, so being closer to them is also a plus (currently back on the East Coast). California is an interesting place, in that most cities don't offer you everything within their immediate borders, but you can certainly get to it with a reasonable flight or drive: mountains, desert, water. Heck, even Vegas, Mexico, Salt Lake, etc. depending upon what tickles your fancy.

Congratulations! That is so cool! They accept, like, no one. How wonderful for you.

I hope you are jumping for joy and going out and buying a really fabulous, expensive bottle of wine to celebrate. Or a new, super-amazing pair of expensive sunglasses. Or even a great, wacky pair of socks. Or something. Anything. Because this totally deserves celebration!

A classmate from my MFA days, Nikki Schildkraut, is in the USC PhD program for poetry. She's lived in such a diverse range of places--the suburbs of Boston, NY state (for college, I think), north-central Florida, (I think) New Mexico, and LA. She might be a good person to talk to about transitioning into living there and dealing with the program. (I don't know your genre, but transitioning into living in the town where you might go to school needs no genre!) I'm not in touch with Nikki these days, but she's a gal that tends to have an interesting perspective on the stuff she's done and the places she's been. Might be a good person to seek out and talk to about the program?

Thanks Steph! I will definitely see if I can connect with Nikki, or at least some current students, when I fly out for a scope of things. LA seems to have a pretty diverse array of neighborhoods, and I'll need some sort of divining rod - just checked Craigslist briefly, and it's certainly a bit more to wrap your arms around than little old Cville.

Congratulations! 'SC is a selective beast for the PhD. If you have questions about the campus/area, and to a lesser extent, the program, I'd be happy to answer them. I've lived near LA for most of my life, and did my MFA(MPW) at USC.

I contacted Cincinnati and was told that they are finalizing their first round acceptances and should begin notifying next week. I know, it's probably ill-form to contact schools but they're my first choice so it's an especially tedious wait.

Awesome!

Whew! I was beginning to worry about that MA acceptance, but it sounds like they haven't notified any PhD applicants yet. Still in the mix!

Oy, I hate to do this, for fear of throwing some people into a panic, but I received an e-mail acceptance to Cincinnati's MA program in fiction on Monday, and I know that they've contacted some PhD recruits as well.

Of course, that doesn't mean that they're completely through with notifying recruits; I certainly have no idea about that. But, yes, I received a response for my MA application in creative writing, and I know for a fact that they also contacted some PhD recruits.

Ahhhh, I knew it...too good to be true. Maybe they're just in the process of finalizing their first round.

hey, bktv--

I just got acccepted to Georgia State via the website--keep checking it--and I called the department. The secretary said they were just beginning to work through the pile.

(And I'm from Knox--Tennessee only takes less than a handful for the creative track--it's a very new program there.)

Hope this helps! Good luck and let me know if GSU ends up being your top choice!

My status at GSU still reads "complete ready for review." I guess I'll find out soon enough.
