Well, I just did what I've read you're sposed to do, which is to look at the work of the faculty advisors/mentors and see how well you like their work or how useful you feel it might be to work with them. I like what I see at Pacific. Really, a good program is a good program, and at some point there's really no mechanical way to latch oneself onto the reputation of ones MFA program. We get out of it what we put into it.

That being said, I think there is a self-fulfilling aspect to so-called "top-rated" schools. Because of their reputation they are the most desirable and therefore self-selecting. They in turn take only the already most talented and developed writers, hence maintaining and building their reputation. I really don't think it has overly much to do with the teaching content, although that is obviously important. Again, I just feel that everything a writing student accomplishes is dependent mostly on their own hard work. Talent is an elusive thing to understand and develop otherwise. We read a lot to absorb techniques and to become inspired, then we must write write write and write some more.
Yup, I think you might very well know me. In fact, I was just going over your wonderful list of suggestions for reading analysis today, thinking about how I might effectively use it for my program essays... but remember, discretion is the greater part of valor...
