Hi Onyx,
I got accepted at Spalding but I applied for the summer res. in France. I also got accepted to Nebraska. Now, you would think it's a no-brainer deciding between France and Nebraska, but it's not that easy. Both programs have really good things about them and sometimes I wish I could take all the features and create my own. I also haven't heard from the other places yet either - Benn, WW, Antioch, Queens, and Lesley which also have great features as well. The problem is, my deadlines for Spalding and NE happen before I even hear from anyone else.

Anyone else have this dilemma?
Can anyone comment on Nebraska's program?

Well, I've been lurking for awhile -- procrastinating the post, procrastinating the completion of all my applications. I finally sent them all on Tuesday and was cheesed (excited/jumping-up-and-down) to be accepted to Spalding's program in fiction this week. I am also facing the dilemma of having to make a decision before I have heard from all interested schools. I don't know what I'll do.

Does anyone have information about Spalding? I'd love to hear from current students and/or alums. I'm also especially interested in finding out more about Lesley, WW, and Goddard. Post here or send an email.

Congrats on Spalding. There are quite a few posts on p. 55, I believe, that rave (in a good way) about Spalding. I am also a lurker, who finally got the applications out. I didn't apply to Spalding yet because I thought I'd missed the deadline for May, and was going to wait until I heard from Queens before applying to Spalding for the November residency. Are they still accepting applications for the May residency?

I did a search through the posts on this board for Warren Wilson, where I'm planning to apply next year, and saw that a poster (I think her screen name was lisag) mentioned she had received a grant from the program upon acceptance. I wasn't aware that there were grants available for low-res programs. I think the post was written way back in 2002, so something might have changed since then. It's also possible that I misread what she was saying. Are any of you aware of grants available from Warren Wilson, or any funding for low-res programs?

Amy,
There is a full-tuition scholarship, the Holden Minority Scholarship (from the handbook: "This endowed scholarship provides full tuition and residency fees for a minority student."). There are also MFA Grants, awarded on the basis of the FAFSA, and the Larry Levis Funds ("These scholarship funds are awarded to entering students who demonstrate both extraordinary merit and unusual need.") I believe that the amounts awarded have to do with the amount of need that particular students show.

Greetings, all. I am waiting to hear responses to my applications to four low-residency programs and find reading this thread a good way to burn off some nervous energy! I read a wonderful suggestion about beginning to assemble a reading list and would love recommendations from others who are mid-way through a poetry MFA. How many of the books on your reading lists are poetry collections and how many are critical essays or books on craft? Anything indispensable?

Can anyone can tell me anything about Whidbey Island? I asked my recommenders to send them some letters on a lark and I sent them my transcripts, too, but their deadline isn't until May 1st, so I haven't sent a writing sample or anything. When they got my letters and transcripts, they sent me a nice letter telling me they were interested. This was a good morale booster, but it also worried me. Are they desperate for students? How do their graduates fare? I know they're relatively new, so it's hard to tell if it's worth the money, especially because they're not affiliated with a school so you can't get loans.

Hi all,

Yay! I've just been accepted to Antioch. Are there any graduates/students out there who want to talk to me about it? How does it compare to other MFAs? I like the social justice aspect of it, and it looks like it does well helping people once they're out of school. Does anyone have any helpful info for me as I decide between this and a full-residency program (possible Mills (waitlist) or, if I get in, Hunter, SFSU or the New School -- they lag with the responding)?

That's a lot more time than I would've thought. That's good. Not that I have any decisions to make having heard NOTHING from anyone! Did you apply to any other low-res programs or are all your others traditional?

Good luck with your decision. Antioch seems great (no other school called my to chat about its program!) but it's a tough call, I'm sure.
