New to Speakeasy, and a question

First of all, my name is Kyle, but I like to go by my pen name K.L. Walker.
My writing journey has brought be to quite a few places.
It was first realized in fourth grade, when my teacher praised me on a story that I wrote on a tiny brick building outside the elementary school. The assignment was to write a story about what was inside it.
From that story, I wrote several others since then.
In college, I got a degree in Journalism, with a concentration in advertising.
In understanding the need to build my portfolio, I started blogging for my local newspaper. After doing this for a while, I stopped, since I wasn't being paid to blog and nothing was coming out of it. My blogging would continue on my website.
I now blog daily on The Walker Estate. This is a website where I post all of my writing. It can be found at www.kylelwalker.com.
Recently, I have been doing Think & Writes. These are 10 minute writing exercises where I write a short story (or flash fiction, if we want to be technical). Sometimes, I go longer than 10 minutes if I feel like the story is good.
This brings me to my question. What have you writers done to build your brand? I am in the process of looking for magazines to publish my stories and I would like to know of a good place to begin. Also, I am trying to find a "day job" that is related to writing. It doesn't have to strictly deal with editing and publishing. I currently have a story that I'm working on that currently has more than 30,000 words that I started in mid August. I don't even know if I will be paid for this. (I may sell a few copies, but it probably won't be a bestseller)
Right now, I am making pizzas at Little Caesars. I only get 12 hours a week and make about $350 a month. Do you have any ideas to help this starving writer find a start? I'm off to a good start with my brand. I just need more people to recognize it. I'll do jobs in technical writing, editing, proofreading, publishing, you name it.
