A Formal Introduction

I fell into this forum last week while awaiting notification of the decision on my 2008 application to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. I had expressed some anxiety in my blog about my chances this year (http://www.silkentent.com/Trees/?p=325). That piece was getting a lot of hits as anxiety built in others (the notification letters went out according to an unusual schedule this year). I followed a link in a Google search that had led some readers to my site, and joined the conversation. I really like this spot, and hope to participate for a while.

I am a fiction writer and essayist living in central Pennsylvania. I used to say "with my husband and daughter," but my daughter graduated from college last month and is now living permanently in her university town (about 40 miles from where I live). She has taken a job in that region in a lab (she has a degree in biology). I go to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont every August (a fact of my life that has caused some consternation on the board I originally hopped on to). This is the first year that I do not have to be back right afterward to start attending my daughter's college field hockey games. "Roll with the Changes" will be the theme of my summer.

I am 61 years old. I taught secondary school English (primarily American literature and composition to eleventh graders) for thirty years. I have been writing fiction more and more seriously since 1989. I have had an online journal/blog since 1999.

I am happy to be here.
