When we talk about "not paying for an MFA" let's not forget that working as a TA is a form of payment. Few schools offer true "free-of-cost MFA" funding. Strictly speaking, given the job market for holders of MFA degrees in CW, choosing to study for the degree is nutty to begin with. If you're going to be nuts, I think the question is "How much am I willing to risk against what this is worth to me alone." It has to be a very personal choice, I think.
ALSO, I seem to remember reading at the UMass-Amherst website (somewhere) that if you have ANY half-time job, ANYWHERE, they will reduce your tuition. Can anyone verify this? I'm pretty sure I read something along these lines a while back.
