UMass says they have "exhausted our financial resources and then some." I get the impression that some of the ten people they accepted did not receive a TAship, and no one coming off the waitlist appears to have a shot. It would seem to be a pretty big risk to go to Amherst and shell out $25K my first year there, with the hope that I might obtain a TAship the second year. But I've got nothing better to do.
I know someone who just declined at UMass. But I know that before he made his decision, he was looking at the fact that you can teach at any of (I think) 5 affiliated schools to help fund your MFA there. (He knew TA positions within the Writing Center were pretty competitive.)
Edited to say: I THINK this information's correct. But don't take it as gospel. :)
