Ampersand Books

We are after writing the major publishing world would leave behind - the difficult, the strange, the unspoken. We are after beauty and grace. Our authors are young, full of spit and verve, most publishing for the first time. We have no preconceived notions of what kinds of writing we are interested in publishing; sometimes our choices surprise even ourselves. However, we are extremely disinterested in genre fiction and social issues.

Brothel Books

Poems that make us want to throw your book across the room because it’s so damn good. Poems we like are often obsessed with myth, foreign languages, and our fathers. Bring orange groves to NYC, the epistolary language of turn-of-the-century Paris to an email exchange, or a fight with your boyfriend to pre-Roman Gaul. Poems that import and export imagery, but handle it carefully. Poems that take linguistic and personal risks feel more important to us.

We believe in collaboration between writer and editor, person and person. We believe in words, what they have to say to the reader, to the world. We believe in transparency and accessibility. We aim to be a press for every writer. We want to consider and publish anything a writer can dream and write, we want to read and have a chance to publish.

For the Whirling Prize each fall, writers submit recently published books in a specified genre and UIndy students choose a winner. The winner receives a cash prize and is invited to read on campus for the Kellogg Writers Series.

In the Chapbook Contest in the spring, students read and judge submissions and then edit and publish the winning chapbook. Winners receive an honorarium and copies of the published chapbook.

Fence Books

Fence has a mission to redefine the terms of accessibility by publishing challenging writing distinguished by idiosyncrasy and intelligence rather than by allegiance with camps, schools, or cliques. It is also Fence‘s mission to encourage writing that might otherwise have difficulty being recognized because it doesn’t answer to either the mainstream or to recognizable modes of experimentation.

Folded Word

Folded Word is an independent literary press specializing in collected short works and regional voices. We love manuscripts of place; we love manuscripts of time; we love voices that take a chance. Please be aware that we are a micro-press, which means we take great care in the production of a very limited list of print (chap)books each year. It also means our authors must take an active role in promoting their titles. Authors need not be US residents. We distribute globally.

Furniture Press Books

Furniture Press is a publisher of strangely poetical texts and ephemera, all which play at (but are not limited to) intertextuality and appropriation. Some want to call it poetry, but poetry can express many differing, sometimes conflicting and contradictory concepts. This is what we thrive on: the ambiguation of art and its likenesses. Our poetics follows this process closely, and we look for similar aesthetics in the writers we choose to publish and promote.
