Established in 1991, AAWW is a national not-for-profit arts organization devoted to the creating, publishing, developing and disseminating of creative writing by Asian Americans–in other words, we’re the preeminent organization dedicated to the belief that Asian American stories deserve to be told. Through our curatorial platform, which includes our New York events series based in Chelsea, and our online editorial initiatives, we're building the Asian American intellectual culture of tomorrow. The Margins, a bold new online magazine dedicated to Asian American creative culture, is the flagship publication of AAWW. Our interns have opportunities to participate at every stage of the multi-media publication and event production process: planning and promoting our literary programming; building and contributing to our emerging magazines; shooting, recording, and editing photos, audio, and video, managing our social media and participating in grants research; designing and marketing our new initiatives; and learning about the bigger picture issues involved in organizational development. As an intern, you’ll receive a number of benefits including Workshop membership and free enrollment in a writing workshop.

POSITIONS:

• Publishing
• Assist our Executive Director and Program Director in shaping and staffing our dynamic literary events! The Events & Programs intern will aid in publicity efforts, research for event participants, handle book orders, organize our library, help in executing the run of show at events, and will maintain and organize a diverse catalog of writers and artists.

Qualifications: Great research skills, ability to multi-task, and attention to detail a must. Interest in literature, specifically Asian American literature, preferred. Photo, audio and video skills a plus.

• Editorial
• Assist our editors with our editorial platforms: The Margins, Open City, CultureStrike, and OurChinatown. You'll be directly involved in every step of the editorial process, including: editorial research, copy editing, proof reading, reporting, fact checking, writing and blogging, photo research, web production, updating site elements and managing social media. Qualifications: Experience in new media, media software, blogging, wordpress and HTML a plus; prior editorial and/or reporting experience preferred.

• SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

• Development
• Want to learn all about grantwriting and nonprofit fundraising? Flex your development muscles by helping us manage our databases and assist with the ins-and-outs of writing successful proposals. You’ll also assist the Executive Director with grant writing and research—both vital not-for-profit skills.

Qualifications: Strong organizational and research skills required, excellent writing skills, ability to manage multiple tasks on self-determined schedule; Excel and online database (DonorPerfect) experience a plus.

• Design & Audio/Visual
• The Design & Audio/Visual intern will assist in the audio and visual needs of the Workshop, including videography and photography of events, editing and assembling footage for programs and editorial platforms, handling equipment, and providing support for audio and video related needs. You will also assist with larger graphic design projects like flyers and brochures. If you are in art school and want to build your design and/or video portfolio, this is the position for you!

Qualifications: Experience in video editing using Final Cut Pro. Handling PA systems, microphones, still and video cameras, and video projectors also helpful. Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator a plus.

• Marketing & Publicity
• The Marketing & Publicity intern will draft and copy edit various promotional and press materials and work with staff to execute various promotional strategies. Intern will be responsible for enhancing and monitoring our social media presence using a variety of outlets. If you are an up-and-coming social media guru with an eye for conversions, this position is for you!

Qualifications: Persuasive writing skills and familiarity with Facebook and Twitter required; technical audio and video skills a plus.
