| Description: | Join Columbia University's Center for Oral History, photographer Gabriele Stabile, and journalist Juliet Linderman for a presentation and discussion on the role of oral history in contemporary human rights and photojournalism. The editors will discuss and read from their new book Refugee Hotel, which combines evocative images are coupled with moving testimonies from men and women who have resettled in the United States from Burundi, Iraq, Burma, Somalia, Bhutan, and Ethiopia. They describe their first days in the US, the lives they’ve left behind, and the communities they have since created. Refugee Hotel is the newest book from Voice of Witness, a non-profit organization that uses oral history to illuminate contemporary human rights crises in the U.S. and around the world. The Voice of Witness book series depicts human rights injustices through the stories of the men and women who experience them. This event is co-sponsored by Columbia University's School of Journalism and Institute for the Study of Human Rights. Voice of Witness website: www.voiceofwitness.org |
