New Shoots is a program in which MFA graduate students gain teaching experience by instructing junior and senior high school students in creative writing. Students may also participate in Booming Ground, a graduate student-run mentorship program for members of the wider community. Other features include the Creative Writing Student Association and the Science Writing Project.

The deadline to apply for the optional residency is September of the previous year.
