the prompt

As writers and instructors of writing, we have all found ourselves with work that came from workshops, random exercises, and desperate attempts to find our voices. Unfortunately, anything that looks too much like it came from an exercise, prompt, or other such “mechanical” source gets relegated by editors to that pile with a sticky note on top that says “too workshoppy.” That is why we created the prompt. The prompt is the place for all levels of writers to have an opportunity to publish, as well as for a community of writers to find new ways to expand creative writing horizons.

Prose & Lore: Memoir Stories About Sex Work

Prose & Lore collects memoir stories about sex work in two issues per year. We strive to provide a space for people in the sex trades to share their stories. The journal is published by the Red Umbrella Project, a NYC-based nonprofit that amplifies the voices of people in the sex trades through media, storytelling, and advocacy programs. Many of the authors are previously unpublished and most have been supported in their pursuit of writing through our memoir writing workshops.

A Public Space

A Public Space seeks writing that uncovers the extraordinary in the everyday, provides a rare glimpse, exposes an unexpected truth, starts a cross-cultural conversation, or puts forth a daring hypothesis. There are no boundaries or stipulations with the exception of requiring authenticity, curiosity, and an honest voice. We suggest that familiarity with the magazine – reading an issue or two – is the best way to gauge whether your work will be a good fit.
