Brain, Child

Through essays, poetry, fiction and feature stories our writers provide their unique perspectives on being mothers. We aim to be down-to-earth, literary, commonsensical, funny, poignant, honest, respectful, irreverent, relevant and intelligent. We like to cover traditional and not-so-traditional parenting subjects; our writers are willing to address the big questions. Each issue of Brain, Child is packed with personal essays, in-depth features, a debate, a parody, fiction, and words from you: our community, our readers.

At Broad Street, we are creating an intersection where truth-telling prose, poetry, and artwork can converge to be enjoyed by readers and writers deeply engaged with the culture, though not necessarily through an academic lens. Your smart best friend should enjoy Broad Street as much as your theory-steeped professorial colleagues.

Communion is not affiliated with any literary school or movement. We simply publish what moves us. Emotionally. Intellectually. While the magazine is not thematic as such, we lean toward work that in some way reflects the concept of communion – with others, self, the world at large etc.

Creative Nonfiction

Creative Nonfiction draws heavily from unsolicited submissions. Our editors believe that providing a platform for emerging writers and helping them find readers is an essential role of literary magazines, and it’s been our privilege to work with many fine writers early in their careers. A typical issue of CNF contains at least one essay by a previously unpublished writer. We’re open to all types of creative nonfiction, from immersion reportage to personal essay to memoir.

Defunct

Our far-flung contributors have interpreted “defunctness” in their own often idiosyncratic ways and have brought back the dead, salvaged the past, revealed their obsessions as writers do. We’re looking for reviews of everything that has had its day: defunct technologies, theories, fads, foods, religions, civilizations, etiquette, customs, slang, assumptions, or even things we wish would become defunct. Imagine a review of the Aztecs. Or a review of the Dodo. Or a review of the Eight Track Player.
