Literary Magazines

Anomalous Press launched in March of 2011 as a non-profit press dedicated to the diffusion of writing in the forms it can take. Its backbone is an editorial collective from different backgrounds and geographies that keep an eye out for compelling projects that, in any number of ways, challenge expectations of what writing and reading should be.

Aries is a nonprofit journal of art and literature published annually by Southeastern Community College. Since 1969, Aries has showcased finely crafted works from North Carolina artists and writers. Our mission is to celebrate North Carolinian writers and artists, to encourage student craft in the the fine arts, and to engage the public in the meaningful and rich heritage of art in Columbus County, NC. BlazeVOX is a haven for undervalued writers to convene with readers worldwide, delivering the contemporary through books-in-hand and ebooks-in-a-minute. Articles of submission depend on many criteria, but overall items submitted must conform to one ethereal trait, your work must not suck. This put plainly, bad art should be punished; we will not promote it. However, all submissions will be reviewed and the author will receive feedback. We are human too. Please send your work.

The Brooklyn Review is published annually by Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Begun almost 30 years ago by John Ashbery, The Brooklyn Review has been overseen throughout its history by esteemed writers such as L.S. Asekoff, Amy Hempel, Josh Henkin, and Jonathan Baumbach. While traditionally having published only poetry, short fiction, plays, and visual art, The Brooklyn Review is expanding to include multimedia works as well as interviews with working writers and artists.

Cactus Heart is a metaphor for how we believe literature and art should be. It should shock and wound and delight us; it should fill us with delight and terror and mystery. It should survive.

We believe in an infinite universe, not in limited real estate. We recognize all editors are biased, including ourselves. We created this publication to add our bias to the mix. We believe in the power of the Internet, and that the digital isn't inferior to the printed.

Eleven Eleven is a biannual journal of literature and art based at California College of the Arts. The aim of the publication is to provide a forum for risk and experimentation and to serve as an exchange between writers and artists.

FACT-SIMILE is a small independent publisher of mostly handmade books and book-objects. We strive to compose all of our products from recycled and reclaimed materials and to help further expand the physical definitions of literature wherever possible. FACT-SIMILE is also an 8.5 x 11 literary journal published annual in the summer months.

Fringe publishes political and experimental work in many genres. Our special mission is to diversify the existing literary community, both aesthetically and demographically: We aspire to publish styles and genres that other journals eschew and we take particular pleasure in publishing voices that are not often included in the canon. Jersey Devil Press releases a monthly online magazine of short fiction and, occasionally, a novel or story collection in the more established “dead tree” format. We're partial to the stories that don’t fit into the traditional definitions of speculative fiction or literature.

Kugelmass publishes the best literary humor out there. We like work that is funny, but we're also believers that funny can be sad and poignant and gritty and whimsical. We like when funny gets dark or ambiguously inappropriate. We like our funny to jerk us from a daze and dangle something extraordinary in our faces, something that was there all along, but we couldn't see it.

As a literary journal with an educational twist, Mason’s Road aims to focus each issue on a particular element of the writing craft.

MilSpeak Memo, MilSpeak Foundation's flagship pub, seeks creative work addressing themes relevant to military life. Publishes new work and best of the web selections, including visual art. MilSpeak Foundation, Inc. (501c3 NPO) exists to raise awareness of creative works by military people, introduces military people to stress management through Arts participation, publishes MilSpeak Books & MilSpeak Memo, preserves history of the everyday in military life, and fosters communication between military and civilian cultures.

Nat. Brut is a multimedia literary journal featuring original and groundbreaking fiction, poetry, and essays, plus short films, visual art, and a free quarterly audio mixtape. Each issue of Nat. Brut is a collection of strange, intelligent creative works, selected by artists of varying levels of fame and experience.

Our focus is on originality, offbeat stories, provocative twists, memorable characters, and writing that's both lyrical and unsentimental.

pacificREVIEW publishes original writing and art by new and established writers and artists. Each annual edition features a theme/focus. The theme/focus for 2012 was SHACKLED! The issue appeard May 2012. A call for papers for the 2013 edition of pacificREVIEW will appear Fall 2012.

Pennsylvania Literary Journal (ISSN#: 2151-3066) is a printed peer-reviewed journal that publishes critical essays, book-reviews, short stories, interviews, photographs, art, and poetry. PLJ is a member of CELJ.

We look for high-quality poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. We love unique, yet well-crafted submissions most of all.

We obey no genre and take anything from limericks to fantasy to genres yet invented. Our key desires are originality, accessibility and quality. We like work with a point, something to say or some sort of inner majic that gives greater meaning to the pretty words and thrilling plots. That said, we're not really sure what we’re looking for until we've seen it, so give us a try. Published online monthly, Red Fez Publications features poetry and prose outside of the narrow, academic stream. Red Fez is committed to bringing light to underground and under-recognized writers and writing.

We're an electronic publication that reprints stories online that originally appeared in print magazines.

Words in their purest form both cut and repair, sometimes simultaneously. We believe that words have not been given the credit they are due often enough. Scissors and spackle wants to slip back into the power of words and is searching for artists who string them together in ways that make us remember. We are not concerned with what box or title an artist's work fits into, or how many words it takes them to get there. We are only interested in the destination. We are interested in fiction without boundaries.

STILL POINT ARTS QUARTERLY has a clear focus on art, artists, and artistry, as it explores issues of expression, imagination, and inspiration. Each issue includes extensive portfolios of contemporary artists as well as articles, essays, fiction, and poetry about art, artists, and artistry. STILL POINT ARTS QUARTERLY has been praised for its rich content, magnificent reproduction of artwork, and splendid layout and design. It is, quite simply, a beautiful publication. Intended for artists as well as art enthusiasts.

We are looking for original literary work of the highest quality, surprising and affecting work that avoids extremes of melodrama and mundanity, authors who marry form and content, and both fresh and experienced voices. We welcome submissions by authors from all walks of life, including outside the U.S.A. We do place a special emphasis on writers and work connected, one way or another, to the Midwest. We are always on lookout for vibrant visual art.

We are looking for high quality submissions. Whatever form your work takes, as long as it is quality, we want it.
