100 Word Story

The whole is a part and the part is a whole. The 100-word format forces the writer to question each word, to reckon with Flaubert’s mot juste in a way that even most flash fiction doesn’t. At the same time the brevity of the form allows the writer “to keep a story free from explanation,” as Walter Benjamin wrote. None of us will ever know the whole story in other words. We can only collect a bag full of shards that each seem perfect.

We prefer poems with these qualities: image, subtlety, and point of view; a surface of worldly exactitude, as well as a depth of semantic ambiguity; and a voice that negotiates with its body of predecessors. Before submitting, please read the submission guidelines.

32 Poems

At 32 Poems our bias is for inventive language complicated by music, form, and feeling. As a rule we publish shorter work that can fit on a single page (32 lines or less), but we sometimes make exceptions to accommodate particularly exciting poems that run a little longer. Perhaps most importantly, our editors believe that a poem’s publication should not begin its disappearance, so we actively champion contributing poets by placing issues with other publications, nominating writers for recognition and prizes, and sharing their work outside the confines of the physical journal.

3Elements Review

WHO WE ARE: 3Elements Literary Review has a presence in Chicago, IL, as well as Des Moines, IA. We publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art, and photography. Each issue begins with the posting of three elements, and ends with a journal filled with the imaginative ways in which each writer and artist transformed those elements. We exist to inspire creativity. We want contributors to our journal to have fun seeing each element through a different lens. We, as well as our readers, thoroughly enjoy the journey on which each piece takes us, as no one story or poem is ever the same.

580 Split

TRANSCENDENCE. Beyond. Beyond the physical. Beyond normal. Beyond what’s believed possible. Beyond even our conception of reality. This is the work of the Artist. Ever striving to see the world from outside the world to stretch the bounds of what one is capable of. And we are interested in this stretching… We seek the places, the spaces, the moments that exist at once everywhere, unknown and uncharted. Everything beyond and in between. Let the power of your imagination be your guide. We’re interested in stories, essays, and poems that speak to this idea of Transcendence.
