Literary Magazines

As a national, nonprofit HIV/AIDS magazine, A&U is interested in publishing original literature, art, opinion, and reportage relating in any way to the AIDS pandemic. We encourage all topics related to HIV/AIDS, including international perspectives, personal accounts, historical perspectives, and personal responses to HIV-related art or artists. We also welcome English translations of work that is unpublished or previously published in a language other than English. See our Submissions page for further information.

Adventum accepts creative nonfiction, essays, and memoir pieces that explore some aspect of personal experience in the outdoors, as well as photography, and haiku.

Airplane Reading is a site that features nonfiction writing about air travel. Beyond throwaway entertainment or mere distraction, we see airplane reading as a kind of storytelling that can animate, reflect on, and rejuvenate the experience of flight. New pieces are posted daily, and each week we select one to feature. We welcome nonfiction submissions (up to 1000 words) that are related to air travel. These might include personal stories, anecdotes, observations, recollections, speculations, insights, etc.

Founded by The New Yorker fiction contributor and Whiting Writers' Award-winner Rick Rofihe, anderbo.com is a New York City-based Literary Online Journal that publishes short stories, poetry, and nonfiction (a.k.a. “fact”). Named “The Best New Online Journal” by storySouth, anderbo.com accepts work from previously-unpublished and emerging talents, as well as established writers and poets.

Anomalous Press launched in March of 2011 as a non-profit press dedicated to the diffusion of writing in the forms it can take. Its backbone is an editorial collective from different backgrounds and geographies that keep an eye out for compelling projects that, in any number of ways, challenge expectations of what writing and reading should be.

Aries is a nonprofit journal of art and literature published annually by Southeastern Community College. Since 1969, Aries has showcased finely crafted works from North Carolina artists and writers. Our mission is to celebrate North Carolinian writers and artists, to encourage student craft in the the fine arts, and to engage the public in the meaningful and rich heritage of art in Columbus County, NC. Assisi offers an eclectic mix of essays (both academic and personal), fiction and poetry.

A monthly review of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and intellectual life, we started The Bacon Review because we care deeply about high-quality literature. We are also aware that the commercial publishing industry is facing difficult times, and consequently, it’s often the case that good writing is not published and authors not promoted. It’s our goal to make excellent work available for free. We also believe that writing should be about more than just publishing. We are interested in our authors as people; we want to know what inspires and motivates our contributors to write.

BlazeVOX is a haven for undervalued writers to convene with readers worldwide, delivering the contemporary through books-in-hand and ebooks-in-a-minute. Articles of submission depend on many criteria, but overall items submitted must conform to one ethereal trait, your work must not suck. This put plainly, bad art should be punished; we will not promote it. However, all submissions will be reviewed and the author will receive feedback. We are human too. Please send your work.

Booth invites submissions of art, poetry, prose, lists, and literary comics. The editors welcome submissions by both emerging voices and established writers.

Founded in 2001, Collision Literary Magazine is a student-run publication that accepts poetry, creative non-fiction prose, literary criticism, art and photography by undergraduate students. Our goal is to represent a variety of young voices emerging from the contemporary body, as well as to extend the dialogue by providing constructive feedback to those writers we are unable to publish at the time. Additionally, the top three submissions in poetry and non-fiction prose are awarded cash prizes.

Founded in 2005, Conte is an online journal that aims to celebrate, explore, and expand the boundaries of both narrative writing and digital publishing.

Creative Nonfiction has always generated energy, intellectual substance, and debate within the genre of creative nonfiction, in part by publishing timely, often controversial theme issues. Each issue contains work by established and emerging writers.

Damazine is an online literary journal publishing fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. We focus on authors based in or with ties to the Muslim world in the largest sense. At the same time, we strive to present a rainbow of themes and writing styles. Our biggest criterion is quality. We are looking for powerful, well-crafted pieces that throb with meaning.

decomP (ISSN: 1947-0436) is an online literary magazine that is published monthly. We have existed since April 2004, and were originally called Decomposition Magazine. DIAGRAM is an electronic journal of text and art. As our name indicates, we're interested in representations. In naming. In indicating. In schematics. In the labelling and taxonomy of things. In poems that masquerade as stories; in stories that disguise themselves as indices or obituaries.

The Doctor T. J. Eckleburg Review is a literary and arts journal housed at The Johns Hopkins University, M.A. in Writing Program. Our aesthetic is eclectic, literary mainstream to experimental. We appreciate fusion aesthetics including magical realist, surrealist, metarealist and realist works with an offbeat spin. We value character-focused storytelling and language and welcome both edge and mainstream with punch aesthetics. We like humor that explores the gritty realities of world and human experiences.

Eratio publishes poetry in the postmodern idioms with an emphasis on the intransitive. Eratio publishes a pdf version of every issue. Eratio Editions, an e-chap publisher, is reading for poetry, innovative narrative prose and recollection, and critical and theoretical essays.  

Eyeshot is internationally accessible. Fiction, photographs, rants, reviews, links, essays, and other unclassifiables are accepted and declined. We pay in dissemination and validation, however meager. We tend to like things that are denser (not so quick to include space breaks between sentences), that are somewhat elusive and inventive and overblown languagewise and not-so-sane aesthetically.

Fiction Fix, the literary journal of the University of North Florida, publishes quarterly online issues. Our authors are both national and international, new and established. A partial list of the diverse types of works we include: experimental and traditional fiction, magical realism, graphic literature, graphic novellas, novellas, historical fiction, humor, flash fiction, novel excerpts, poetic prose. The Journal recognizes particularly creative cover letters and biographies with the Gypsy Sachet Award.

Fringe publishes political and experimental work in many genres. Our special mission is to diversify the existing literary community, both aesthetically and demographically: We aspire to publish styles and genres that other journals eschew and we take particular pleasure in publishing voices that are not often included in the canon. Ghost Ocean Magazine is an online literary magazine publishing short prose, fiction under 3,000 words, and poetry, with occasional interviews and reviews. Our editors have varied tastes, but tend to lean toward energetic and skillful writing that shows command of voice, tension, and language. We like non-boring writing that beckons to be read.

Headmaster, the biannual art magazine for man-lovers, is published twice a year in an edition of 1,000. All work in Headmaster is assigned by the editors. While primarily a visual magazine, each issue of Headmaster features the work of 1-3 fiction and non-fiction writers. Headmaster publishes roughly five text-based pieces per year. Work published in the first four issues of Headmaster include erotica, film criticism, travel writing, literary fiction and memoir. The editors of Headmaster are interested in other forms of writing as well.

HOOT is a magazine on postcards! We publish stand-alone, zestful nuggets of fewer than 150 words, with art to match. The idea is that current, quality literature can be shareable and accessible.

Irish Pages is a biannual journal, edited in Belfast and publishing, in equal measure, writing from Ireland and overseas. Its policy is to publish poetry, short fiction, essays, creative nonfiction, memoir, essay reviews, nature-writing, translated work, literary journalism, and other autobiographical, historical, religious and scientific writing of literary distinction.

Kugelmass publishes the best literary humor out there. We like work that is funny, but we're also believers that funny can be sad and poignant and gritty and whimsical. We like when funny gets dark or ambiguously inappropriate. We like our funny to jerk us from a daze and dangle something extraordinary in our faces, something that was there all along, but we couldn't see it.

Line Zero is an emerging, independent print journal dedicated to writing and the arts. Unlike any other publication of its kind, Line Zero features the hybrid content of a traditional literary journal and a collection of editorial essays on art, writing, music, publishing, photography, creative writing reference, book and tech reviews, and art events.

Milk Sugar is a literary journal that was formed with the creative writer in mind. We want to provide a forum where writers feel free to express their creative side in an environment that actually promotes creativity and not the status quo. Milk Sugar is not meant to be your typical literary journal, hence the name. We want the erotic, the fantastical, the existential, the dirt, the grime and most of all the ultimate beauty that is a well written piece. Monday Night has been bringing quality new literature to the airwaves since 2001. We seek to publish the best new and emerging writers from around the U.S. and are open to international submissions as well.

The Montréal Review is a nonpartisan online magazine. We publish book and art reviews, short stories and creative nonfiction, feature articles on politics, philosophy, history, art, and music.

Nat. Brut is a multimedia literary journal featuring original and groundbreaking fiction, poetry, and essays, plus short films, visual art, and a free quarterly audio mixtape. Each issue of Nat. Brut is a collection of strange, intelligent creative works, selected by artists of varying levels of fame and experience.

New Madrid is the national journal of the low-residency MFA program at Murray State University. It takes its name from the New Madrid seismic zone, which falls within the central Mississippi Valley and extends through western Kentucky.

Newport Review is an independent online journal of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and visual art. Founded in the 1980s as a print journal, we are now an electronic publication dedicated to publishing innovative, language-rich fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. We are also open to prose poetry, one-act plays and experimental forms and photography. Our New Voices section welcomes work from new and younger writers from high school through college.

The editors at noah magazine don’t believe the popular assumption that there’s no market for short fiction, essays, and poetry among casual readers. Nor do we think that literary writing and entertainment ought to be be mutually exclusive categories. We strive to bring readers literate, entertaining writing that pushes the boundaries of genre and form without losing focus of what makes reading enjoyable.

The Owen Wister Review is the University of Wyoming’s Arts and Literary Journal produced through the Student Media department. The editorial staff is comprised entirely of undergraduate and graduate students who have nuanced yet supportive tastes in art and writing and strive to publish the best quality creative non-fiction, poetry, fiction, and art submitted from both emerging and established authors and artists. We encourage work that challenges itself, that is naturally surprising.

pacificREVIEW publishes original writing and art by new and established writers and artists. Each annual edition features a theme/focus. The theme/focus for 2012 was SHACKLED! The issue appeard May 2012. A call for papers for the 2013 edition of pacificREVIEW will appear Fall 2012.

Pennsylvania Literary Journal (ISSN#: 2151-3066) is a printed peer-reviewed journal that publishes critical essays, book-reviews, short stories, interviews, photographs, art, and poetry. PLJ is a member of CELJ.

phren-Z is a quarterly online magazine celebrating the community of Santa Cruz writers. We are interested in seeing your best work: surprise us, delight us, make us shed a tear. We accept and read submissions year-round from all adult (18 and over) writers from Santa Cruz County, both published and emerging. phren-Z accepts previously published work, as long as you hold the copyright. Simultaneous submissions are accepted: just let us know as soon as possible if a piece we are considering has been accepted elsewhere.

Ploughshares, a journal of new writing, is guest-edited serially by prominent writers who explore different and personal visions, aesthetics, and literary circles. 50% of each issue is directly solicited by the guest editor, and the remaining 50% is selected from unsolicited manuscripts. Pshares Solos, a new series in 2012, will digitally publish long stories and novella length work as standalone singles. The series is staff edited, and we are actively looking for submissions. The Poetry Porch is a magazine on the Internet for poets, teachers, and their students. First appearing online in 1997, it is only published on the Internet (so far). We are interested in original unpublished poems, essays, reviews, memoirs, and fiction, although we might republish work as a special posting for a featured poet. Besides an annual issue, often devoted to a theme, the site also updates on a regular basis the Sonnet Scroll, an unfurling electronic scroll of unpublished traditional and hybrid sonnets.

Prick of the Spindle is a literary journal that is open to forms in both traditional and experimental modes, with a special bent toward fresh and innovative voices using language in unique ways.
