I like it when a writer tells me why they are querying me, in particular; it shows they have done their homework and they understand the kind of book they've written. The best queries manage to be both concise and elegantly written, and at the same time present a compelling conflict at the heart of their story.
Is there a fee for working with agents or do they get part of the commission from the book sales?
Is strong journalism and column writing considered when judging the talent of a writer seeking to branch out into more creative areas?
