Re: 'Bama Can't Post

Just wanted to drop in and suggest that everyone apply to Alabama if you can tolerate living in a town of 100,000 football-obsessed people. My first month in the program has gone by and I feel privileged to be able to work with the genuine, sincere, talented people - peers and faculty alike. There's so much opportunity available for Alabama's MFA candidates.

And the funding? Insane. Seth's new MFA rankings puts Alabama's funding at #2!

If anyone would like to ask me anything about the program feel free and leave me a PM.

Yes, but can they win a championship with Ingram out. I think not!

I think that backup Trent Richardson is a better RB than Ingram anyway. The team won't skip a beat in the 1-3 games that Ingram is expected to miss. Alabama's larger concern is nearly their whole starting defense last season went to the NFL.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm seriously considering Alabama. The funding is a plus, and it sounds like there's a great sense of community. I'm not sure about the whole football craziness, but I did go to a pretty big football school for undergrad, so I could probably deal.

Re: [napk132] 'Bama Can't Post

Sorry for the unnecessary digression, napk132. This should be the biggest plug for the program because I went to Bama's rival and loved it. Bama usually makes me gag :P But, the program does have a very strong sense of community (from what I've heard), has great funding, and is in an area with a low cost of living. There are teaching opportunities and opportunities to work with one of the best lit mags in the country. It's supposed to be a pretty demanding curriculum, which I like, and requires a decent amount of lit courses, which I also like (I want a good balance and they seem to have that). It's enough to make this happy Auburn grad swallow her pride and re-apply (I applied last year without success). For what it's worth!

This is my top choice. They give you an online account. Does anyone know if you get your acceptance/rejection through the mail or online? Also, does anyone know the roundabout time I should hear something?

Re: [Barney] 'Bama Can't Post

Are you ready for this Barney?? Are you sitting down??

'Bama notifies acceptances either by phone call or email (mostly by phone). And last year they notified Poetry folks on Jan. 27th (as in next week) and Fiction folks Feb. 12th. In 2009 they notified both genres on the 21st of January, yup, that's right today.

In other words, any day now you could get a phone call or email. Eeep!

They're one of my top choices as well.

I love the theatrics at the start of your post. Completely warranted when it comes to 'Bama!

Those dates are early, which excites me. I'm fiction, and February is close. Which concentration are you?

And, you know, any day you could get a phone call or email as well. Best of luck, my friend. Business is getting ready to pick up real soon.

I'm poetry. Getting nervous about the any minute any day situation. But it's better to know, for better or worse, than not know.

Hope you get some good news and soon!

Funny story: I'm standing in Best Buy using one of their computers! When you said they were calling today, I reached for my phone and realized it's at the house.

Yikes. Oh well. I'd just be staring at it anyway now.

Yup, it seems like both fiction and poetry folks have been notified. I am sadly not one of them.

I don't know anything about wait-lists yet. I don't think anyone has reported being on one. I also don't know what their wait-list system is and whether they notify people that are on a wait-list or only notify if a spot opens up.

Re: [blob] 'Bama Can't Post

Ok, did anyone else get a generic "apply to Alabama grad school" postcard from them? I assumed it was a way of letting me know they had gotten all of my application material, but maybe it was a super passive rejection...postcard. I've somehow completely blocked out of my head when I actually received it, so it could be either really...get it together blakeeva...

Re: [blob] 'Bama Can't Post

I spoke with the grad coordinator at Alabama on Tuesday (I believe her name is Carol) and she told me that as of then, only the first round of fiction acceptances had gone out. I'm not sure about poetry.

She also told me that they will continue to make offers through April, and that unless you get a letter that says otherwise, to consider yourself still in the running.
