Re: [clarabow] Who Went Where Can't Post

I *think* Christopher Howell got his MFA from The University of Massachusetts. He's won at least 3 Pushcart Prizes.

Carver did take classes from John Gardner at Chico State. He also went to Iowa but did not finish an MFA. Honestly, though, I'm excited to hear people still read Carver. I believed he'd become passe.

Yes!! I actually do want to get 2 more MFAs. It's kind of pathetic, but I don't have much interest in the jobs I'm capable of getting right now. Also, nobody would hire me because they thought I'd leave for grad school, and from the look of my resume, it looks like I'm too creative for an office job.

I think Carver was Stegner Fellow. Erin McGraw was, too.

Do their stories feature children?

This is random. Did Mya Goldberg (the one who wrote Bee Season) attend an MFA?

and Steven Millhauser? anyone know his trajectory?

did Roth get any schooling?

Roth received a M.A. from University of Chicago, if I remember correctly--i'm not sure if it was a literature-based or writing-based degree. I think he did his undergraduate work in New Jersey.

Re: [willbell] PYNCHON! Can't Post

Yes, Roth got an MA in English from the University of Chicago. He studied under Saul Bellow (who also went there). Vonnegut did not complete an MA in anthropology at Chicago, but after Cat's Cradle was published, the dept. decided to award him a degree anyway on the basis of his creative work.

Full disclosure: did my undergraduate work at the U of C (not English), and that prestige is something. I have had no trouble getting office jobs at all.

Yeah, Roth got his MA at Chicago (in lit) with the idea of getting a PhD and becoming a professor. Then I think he went into the army for a while and before he could finish grad school he published Goodbye, Columbus. Something like that.

Re: [candyann] PYNCHON! Can't Post

Candyann, I did my undergrad work at a top Ivy league institution. I'm not going to brag about myself on this board because that's ridiculous. Sales and marketing wouldn't hire me because I think they distrusted my achievements and knew I was going to leave very soon and waste their orientation money. They figured I would get bored doing office jobs. I tried to convince them otherwise, but they didn't believe me.

I just found out Thom Jones went to Iowa. I don't know why, but that strikes me as strange.
