Still having problems? Do you need an e-mail address? I work for the University of Arkansas, so I see the director of the MFA Program on a weekly basis. Let me know if you need some help.

anybody apply here this year?

i'm confused about how. is the sample (and the app form available for download) the only thing that needs to be to them first? the form says to send letters, transcripts, gre scores, etc too. but the program site says to send only 3 copies of the sample and the application form.

any light to shed?

Arkansas has the best application, hands-down.

Basically, you send your writing samples to the program first. Then, if they like you, they'll invite you to send the rest of your application.

that is great! so i just send off my 3 copies of the sample and a SASPostcard and the form and hope for the best? I don't, like the form seems to say, send everything except for the app fee?

J, it's been a while since I applied to Arkansas. You may want to follow up with them directly since the process may have changed since my experience.

If you want to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship, you have to fill out the Graduate Assistantship Application and provide supporting materials, which include: 3 letters of recommendation, GRE scores, transcripts, a critical writing sample, a teaching statement, and answers to a series of questions. This information is not required to be considered for the MFA program, but it is required to be considered for funding.

I haven't heard anything about their poetry program in particular (I'm for fiction), but I called them the other day and their rep said decisions will be coming in the next two weeks or so.

I'm in at:
SIUC, with good funding via a TA
U of Maryland - haven't yet told me what funding will be
U of Arkansas - TA, fellowship, and tuition waiver

Waitlisted at Vanderbilt and McNeese (I've ruled out McNeese)

Still have to hear from
Brown
UNCG
Montana
U of Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
Colorado State

So, supposing that I don't get into any more than the 3 I'm now in, anyone got any advice? Arkansas looks to me like the best program, but it's a four-year program in a town I've never been to. SIUC is close by where I now live, but I don't much like the town of Carbondale. Maryland (who hasn't yet said anything about funding) is basically in Washington D.C., a town I'm not real excited about living in either.

I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and go to Arkansas. I figure that if it turns out to completely suck after the first year I can re-apply to some 2 year programs, and no huge harm done.

Thoughts on SIUC vs. Maryland vs. Arkansas?

I'm reviving this thread because I found out today I'm on the waitlist at Arkansas for poetry. If there are any current students (poetry or fiction) in the program out there, could you please answer my questions?

1. How many people in the program come in off the waitlist?

2. How is the funding? Is it enough to support you? Is everyone funded?

3. What is Fayetteville like?

4. Do people really stay there for 4 years, or is it possible to do it in 3? Do you prefer having 4 years?

6. What is the teaching load like?

6. Are there any editing opportunities such as working on a literary journal?

Barry Hannah	Can't Post

Barry Hannah died a couple of days ago, one of the most famous Arkansas MFA grads. Everyone here in Oxford is pretty sad about it, they're having a book conference for him this weekend.
Anybody applying this year? I applied, waiting to hear back. I'm an undergrad at Ole Miss.
