Know anything about Queen U of Charlotte MFA?	Can't Post

Hi Everyone-

I am applying for the 2nd year in a row to MFA programs. I am very interested in Queens University of Charlotte's low residency MFA program. I applied there a year ago and was denied. I have been participating in workshops and conferences since then to improve my poetry so I am hoping to get in this year. Anyone know statistics on chances of getting in there? Any current Queens students?

Don't know the percentages about acceptance. I do know that it's a good option for low MFA's. They have a quality faculty, as far as I'm concerned. I've heard good things about the program (I live about an hour from Charlotte). Good luck this year.

By now a number of Queens students/alums have posted here. Use the "Search Posts" feature ("Queens" is a good keyword, though I suppose it's always possible to get a result that's really covering Queens College in New York, as you may have discovered when "Googling").

I also am interested in any information about the MFA program at Queens. I am very curious to know if students find online workshopping a help or a waste of time. About six years ago I started an MFA at Goddard, and it just wasn't a good fit for me. Since that time, I am almost finished with a Ph.D. in Narrative Inquiry, but I still am not doing what I really want which is to write fiction (and of course publish) so I can teach and write leisurely in the summers. For some reason I am drawn to Queens and would really like to hear from current students or alums about their experiences. Many thanks in advance!

about queens are mary akers and clifford garstang
i think they both got their mfa from the program

I am currently enrolled in Queens program, in poetry. The other reply has two good blogs to look at. My blog is jacarty.blogspot.com and some of the earilier blogs have more specific details about the Queens program if I remember correctly.

Feel free to send me a private message if you have specific questions. The online workshopping is basically sending your work via email to your group: usually your mentor/professor and 2-3 other students, never more than three. You have a week to critique the work and send a response to your group and teacher then you get responses from your other group members and in another week from your teacher.

I find it works well. I finished my first semester and my first submission for this term will be due in August so got to start gearing up for that :) I learn a lot from reading the work of other people and the residency program is great, the workshop leaders I have had don't just critique they also try to teach. In short, I really like my program!

Kendalls, I sent you a private message about the online workshopping; you can pm back if you haven't received it and I'll resend.

I'll just add here that I had a Ph.D. (history) when I entered the Queens program. And I was already adjuncting in writing programs. But like you, I had a vision of ultimately teaching fiction (full-time and tenure-track, preferably).

I don't know exactly what your Ph.D. entails, but you should know that in all likelihood you still have a very long road ahead if you're taking on a low-res MFA for tenure-track teaching purposes. Unlike the traditional academic fields, which frequently (and expect to) hire new graduates for tt jobs before they've published their first book, most tt jobs in creative writing require book publication in your genre. But maybe your Ph.D. will give you an entree to an English department and you'll be able to take it from there.
