Check out Douglas A. Martin. His new novel, Branwell, about Charlotte and Emily Bronte's brother was recently released. I think if you do a quick google search you find some audio clips of him reading also...

Darcey Steinke is also good. Check out her novella, Milk.

I think they are both on the Fiction faculty.

has anyone else gotten into the new school for fiction? I called them today, as I havent heard anything yet and they said they would be mailing out decisions this week, and they actually haven't accepted anyone yet, which is obviously not true. I was just wondering if there was still hope....

So, Pitselah, where do you think you'll be going in the end? New School? Brooklyn? Other? What are the key factors?
Also, have you heard any good (or not-so-good) things about New School fiction? I crave info and have practically none. It was even too new for that 1996 rankings list everybody hates, so I don't even have a general sense of where it lands in the MFA world. Any thoughts?

That's very bizarre that they said they didn't accept anyone. They definitely have. They must be doing it in rounds and whomever you spoke was speaking of that particular round, and might be too uninformed to know that there were others before this.

I called for nonfiction and they said that they would be mailing stuff out this week too. they have accepted people and rejected them, the guy told me that they don't do a mass decision basis, it's case by case....which makes me wonder if it's more along the lines of a huge waitlist they just filter through. I don't know, but they told me to call back next week if I haven't heard anything so don't worry!

Hiya! I got into the New School poetry program, too. I am deciding between Florida and the new school. I have to decide.. tomorrow. I'd definitely like to talk with you about the new school--maybe together we could cobble together a decent knowledge of what we'd be getting into.

Hiya!! I actually decided on Florida today... but it was a tough decision, and the New School was, of course, very tempting... let me know if you have any questions about that program.. I have read a bit of Vivian Gornick, and she is amazing. And, David Gates is also fabooooo!

Congrats Chris on making a decision! Making the decision is the worst part. I am really excited to work with, near, under Vivian Gornick. Though I am not so excited about the funding situation at NS. But if I will it, it will come. (a positive attitude goes a long way, right?) So...what was the deciding factor? Just curious.

I never heard back from TNS so I called them today just to make sure I'd been rejected and it had gotten lost in the mail, and they told me they are still deciding on about 100 applications.
What the hell?

People have been accepted and rejected for weeks now... how do they even accept people until they've reviwed all the applications?

I think that means you're probably on some unofficial wait-list. Washington did this to me, back when I was applying, and I wouldn't have known it if I didn't call them and ask them where my rejection was.

Yeah, but I DID call them and they told me they had 100 applications still under considartion.
Seems like far too many for a wait list, even an unofficial one.
Certainly could be lying though...

"Still under consideration", to me, sounds like they're still thinking about it, as in, they've read those applications and you might get in, but you might not. Though, yeah, to have a hundred still under consideration does sound pretty fishy.

Do they have sliding enrollment or something? If I were you, I might call them back and ask for clarification.

New School Contact Info	Can't Post

I can see from my online status page that the New School has not received my undergrad transcripts yet, although i sent them out with a cover sheet over two weeks ago (from NYC!). Does anyone have the contact information (phone or email) for the New School. When I call the public number, I get animated voice and cannot find a real person. Figured someone out there may have already done this research and could provide the info! Thanks!

I haven't received anything from the New School yet. It's the only school out of the eleven that I applied to (for poetry) that I haven't heard from. I would think rejections would have gone out by now. That's what I'm expecting. Not because I don't think I could get in, but because when I prayed about which program I would get into I prayed that I get into the best school for me, and that I be given as much guidance in the decision making process as possible. I think getting into only one school is some guidance for sure! Now I certainly know where I'm meant to be. Yeah Emerson! Anyone else going to Emerson?

Two people received acceptances today in fiction, so I don't think that you should write TNS off yet. I'm also still waiting to hear for CNF. From reading various blogs and threads, it looks like people were still being admitting as late as May in the past.
