New low-res program: Whidbey Island	Can't Post

Interesting news: the Whidbey Island Writers Association, in Washington State, is starting a new low-res MFA program that is not affiliated with any existing college or university.

It sounds intriguing, though I wonder whether the non-affiliation with existing institutions will help or hinder it. Also, no word yet on faculty.

But it does sound interesting.

They might have trouble getting accredited, which would mean that their graduates would not be able to get teaching jobs.

The newspaper article I linked said:

The state's Higher Education Coordinating Board, which approves new degrees before they can be offered, sanctioned the Whidbey program over the summer.

So it sounds like they are accredited at the state level, at least.

Approval by the state board isn't accreditation. It means they can stay in business, but it doesn't mean that other schools will respect their degrees.

Accreditation is by regional academic authorities, and follows an investigation of the program, its faculty, facilities, and so on.

And it's a pain in the ass to get approved. I work for an online degree granting institution (not unlike a low-res program), and one of our degree programs just got rejected for the second time in a year.

Anyone who enters an MFA for the purposes of getting a teaching job is putting themselves in a VERY dangerous boat...

I'd love to teach after getting my MFA, but not for the money. I'd be looking to learn more about writing out of having to teach it.

Another semester and I'll be shopping my resume around.

Just a general comment on the Whidbey Island program, I heard that they are now accredited. I haven't verified this, just something I heard from someone I met who got her MFA there. She loved the program. I think it's worth looking into. Not to mention that the Pacific Northwest, and Whidbey in particular, is a verifiably gorgeous location to get your MFA.
