Just wanted to update this post I'll likely be attending the Hunter program in the Fall (made the short list), so I've researched it well. I've lived in New York for years and didn't feel like moving for school; out of NYC programs Hunter impressed me as really the best bang for the buck.

Peter Carey is indeed the Program Director & teaches fiction, he appears involved and enthusiastic, and the poetry (which is my focus) is also very solid. The faculty and former students gave an inspired (and well-attended) Open House which is always a good sign. The program offers a fellowship to teach "Intro to CW" in the 2nd year. The minimal debt and teaching experience did it for me depends on your priorities, but to me a lack of financial burden = more personal freedom and writing time in the future.
