Re: [rebarusset] UNCW Can't Post

If it makes anyone feel better, while Wilmington seems like a great program, I wouldn't describe the city as breathtaking. I mean, it's nice, the beach and all, and a real downtown. But not *gasp* amazing. So if you get in, great. But if you don't, no reason to suffer paradise lost all over again.

UIUC Can't Post

I just heard from UIUC. It's the first school I've heard from out of 12 and I've been waitlisted. Is this a semi-good thing? How many applicants does Illinois normally wait-list?

p.s. Hi, I'm new here.

That is an extraordinarily good thing, emilyemily! Congrats!

What genre? I heard from a little bird that they cut their poetry admittance number to TWO this year because of state budget cuts, and I can't see why that wouldn't carry over to fiction, too. Even if this isn't true, they usually only take four max, right? So feel proud: they like you a lot.

Great. Thanks for the fast response. My application was for fiction, and I'm pretty sure they said they were taking 3 fiction MFA students this year.

New to boards Can't Post

Newcomer to the boards, hi everyone!

I have not heard back from any of my programs yet, but as soon as I do I will let everybody know. I applied in Creative Fiction to:

Iowa
Boston U
Florida
Michigan
Oregon
Texas State
Houston

Feeling so nervous, and wishing I had applied to more programs now that its February. Hope everyone starts getting phone calls soon!

Well I called and got a voicemail saying Lynh Tran, the program administrator, was out & would be back on the 17th, which is tomorrow. So that may indicate that they haven't done a darn think as far as acceptances and rejections... as you'd think the program administrator would be tied to his or her desk for the duration of that process.

Re: [sahaider] New to boards Can't Post

Hi all,

I'm a lurker here and have been taking refuge (torturing myself?) every couple of hours with updates. Broke down today and called Iowa and Minnesota because I had a feeling it was all over and my waiting was just going to make it all more painful in the end. Yup. Iowa already called all the creative nonfiction people, and Minnesota sent out all of its acceptances for creative nonfiction via email on Monday. So that's that.

Blah.

Just thought I'd put that out there for anybody who was still waiting for one of those two schools.

There's still a shot for waitlists, sahaider, and plenty of the season left. So don't give up hope yet! Do you have any idea if they notified in fiction as well?

Re: [vaquero] New to boards Can't Post

Hi Vaquero,

Good point, but I'm feeling a little hopeless at the moment. No idea about fiction, but I'd just go ahead and call if I were you. They answered my questions really quickly and it spared me a few more days of waiting.

Good luck!

Re: [StellaBella] New to boards Can't Post

Iowa and Minnesota have already notified all of their nonfiction admits? I guess that means I wasn't admitted (and those were my top 2 schools for reasons of faculty and location). I suppose the stars are aligning for me to attend Alabama's wonderful program.

Hi Stella,

For Minnesota, did you call the 612-626-6366 number at the bottom of the Creative Writing page? I wanted to call to check about fiction, but no one answered. And then I worried I was calling the wrong number and all my phone anxieties came out.

Hi rain_raine,

I think that's the one I called; I'm not sure. But my philosophy is, CALL! Why should you have to sit around a week or two after they've already accepted everyone waiting for a rejection? Go for it! ;)

Alabama and Syracuse: Is there any hope? Can't Post

It seems like most everyone has heard from Alabama and Syracuse in Fiction, right? So do you think it's safe to say that if I haven't heard from them yet, it's probably not a great sign?

I haven't heard from any schools since Monday and I'm going completely crazy over here. Who else is planning on getting drunk this weekend?

Oh honey I've already started with the drinking.

A friend of mine was accepted to Arkansas's PhD, FYI. I, however, have not made the cut at Texas, Illinois, or Ohio State.

Ah, well. My back up plan is to move to Vegas and to continue to make my fortune as a candle lady :)

Even with the MFA, you'll need to work as a candle lady to make your fortune, so you might as well get started on it.

To all interested:

An administrator at UC Irvine says they will begin replying to fiction applicants "In early or mid March."

I post this in the hope that the administrator will be spared future queries like mine.

Re: [emilyemily] a slow day? Can't Post

I applied in Creative Nonfiction, and heard from U of Montana today with an acceptance per e-mail, also offering a TAship.

I have now heard from:
UC Riverside: Accepted
U of Iowa: Accepted (yay!)
Oregon State: Accepted
University of North Carolina Wilmington: Accepted
Ohio State: Waitlisted
U of Montana: Accepted

Waiting on:
Notre Dame
U of Georgia
Portland State
San Jose State

UNCW is putting some pressure on me to decide regarding a TAship there, but I haven't even heard back from all schools, and Iowa doesn't have their funding info from the university yet, so I can't really decide until I have all my options. Not sure what to do about that...Besides that, very excited, because I really had been thinking I would be lucky to get in even one program. never imagined this outcome.
