New School	Can't Post

So far I've gotten into two MFA programs: American University and New School University. I'm waiting to hear from Hollins and UVA (although UVA is saying they won't let people know about their decisions until April 1st which is when the New School needs an answer by...)

Does anyone know about the New School's MFA program or had any experience? I'd love to hear about it.

Why don't you call the New School and ask if you could speak with a few students? I'm sure the department will be very helpful.

The owner of this blog, Brand New Insects (http://www.shannacompton.com/blog.html), is, I believe, either a student or recent graduate of the program. You could scan her blog, or even ask her advice, if you like.

when i was inquiring about spalding's MFA that's what i did. well, i emailed. the woman who answered my emails also put me in contact with number of students, current and alumni.

that's a great way to find out what you want to know.

i'm curious though, why didn't you ask questions about the program before you applied? what if you find out that you don't like it? what if you've wasted your application fee? or are these just follow-up questions?

I have a friend who graduates from the New School MFA program this spring. She seems to have enjoyed it a great deal. I think it is a worthwhile place. Their faculty list is quite strong. Plus, you'd get to live in NYC which would be great for connections, etc.

I just have some follow up questions. I've spoken to a couple people, I just wanted to find out from a couple more. This is just me getting anxious about my decision.

i understand now. while i haven't called anyone, i've been checking university of louisville's site almost incessantly since i submitted my humanities phd application a couple weeks ago. i should hear something by the end of march/april 1. i can definitely identify.

Nadom, are you in New York? New School writing program is hosting a cool thing tmw night:

National Book Critics Circle: Reading and Awards Ceremony
Reading: Thursday, March 17, 6:00 p.m., Tishman Auditorium, free
Awards Ceremony and Reception:Friday, March 17, 6:00 p.m., Tishman Auditorium, free
Every year, the National Book Critics Circle presents awards for the finest books published in English in the categories of: Fiction, General Nonfiction, Biography and Autobiography, Poetry, and Criticism. The first night, finalists read from their work. The second night, winners are announced at the awards ceremony. Hosted by the New School Graduate Writing Program.

Maybe you could check it out, and there are bound to be folks from the program around to talk to. Also they have open houses from time to time (I went to one this winter) so you may want to check on that too.

my former poet/mentor/advisor taught at new school and another poet I like is teaching there now (Miranda Field). I didn't apply myself because I think there is very little funding to attend school there unlike bigger schools which have more money to dole out in general.

Thanks, Ceb, I did end up going to the National Book Award Reading, (which I enjoyed very much for the most part :) Right now I think I'm leaning towards Hollins University because it's a good program, my mentor/professor went there and well, I don't have to pay tuition and I get a little stipend. The New School's giving me a scholarship but not enough considering I'll be having undergraduate loans to worry about paying off very soon.

I don't know how the environment in Roanoke, Va is going to affect my writing. I'm thinking that having my own apartment in a place that isn't so distracting as NYC might be nice. Then again, I might not get inspired as much as I do in NYC (I get so many ideas by riding the subway and people watching.) Eh, guess I have to make my decision within the next week :/

I don't know if the rules have changed since I went to school, but I think if you go back to school full time you don't have to pay back your undergraduate loans yet. So you may have a few more years with no payments and no interest. They should start to come due (along with any graduate loans) six months after you stop being a full-time student.

The New School University writing faculty has some pretty impressive members, including author & critic Dale Peck. As a HS guidance counselor, I'm impressed w/ the school itself as well.

I hear great things about Helen Schulman. And I think Pablo Medina is on staff there. He's pretty great as well.

I did a one-week workshop with Sigrid Nunez this summer. I really loved her. She's fun, funny, smart, and a careful reader. I really enjoyed working with her.
That being said, I've only ever workshopped with two people - Sigrid Nunez and Lan Samantha Chang. In both cases, I was really impressed.
If it helps, everybody else in the workshop loved working with Sigrid as well.

I am going for fiction. I think Sarah Lawrence is one of the best programs. I have attended two summer workshops and I know the faculty well. The quality and the commitment to teaching are unmatched. I think it's worth every penny.

that's cool. Do you know if you are going to receive any funding or anything like that? I'm totally psyched that I'm accepted! I'm just also aware that it's super pricey, but I was really wanting to get in. So you are definitely going? I'm visiting a friend in NYC in a couple weeks so I'll definitely visit the campus while I'm there.

Has anyone heard from the New School yet?
Today I got something from their financial aid office, listing the usual eligible loans, but also listing scholarship money for Fall 06 and Spring 07.....but I haven't heard if I'm in or out. I wonder if this means anything at all, or if it's just their usual finanical aid, based on a formula, using all the numbers and info I provided on the FAFSA.
Anyone have any ideas?

coolshoes, yea I got the same letter today, listing "creative writing scholarship" money for 06-07. I could be wrong but I think the financial letter has out run the acceptance somehow. I would be really cruel to list scholarship money available to us, and then reject us. Crueler things have happened.

Going to The New School ??	Can't Post

Is anyone out there going to The New School for nonfiction?
I'm curious to know what it's reputation is outside of Manhattan. Forgetting the money for the moment, is it kind of cavalier to turn it down in favor of a less prestigious school because of family logistics; or should I find a way no matter what to make it work because it is such a stellar program?

I'm wondering about the New School as well...hard to guage where it is on the map in relation to other programs. Is it a stellar program? The faculty certainly is, but what about the program itself?? Anyone out there with thoughts on this? Or on the New School as compared to other NY programs - Sarah Lawrence/Columbia?
