Re: [karinr] I'M IN!
And for everyone else, a little anecdote to pass the tooth-gnashing time ahead...
I recently applied to Example University for an MFA (Fiction). I had just finished an MA at Prestigious Overseas University with excellent grades. I had a strong writing sample and superb references and several publication credits and a three professionally produced plays in a Respectable Foreign Country. My various "personal" and other statements were real shiny.
Once I had paid the admission fee, the admissions office emailed to say "Thanks! we'll be in touch when we send your application to the creative writing people, and they'll be in touch if there is anything missing."
I didn't include a transcript with my application, because I got my B.A. from Example University and I saw on their website that all departments have access to all transcripts from that university. What's more, I didn't include GRE scores. I took the Graduate Record Examination when I was a recent graduate, 14 years ago. I didn't know it was possible to take it again. When I tried to find my results I learned that they were erased after 5 years.
This is entirely my fault, by the way; and it has a lot to do with living in five countries working three times that many jobs since I left the USA. I've driven on the wrong side, eaten grasshoppers, and spent every night in tranny bars since then (not all at once). Nobody anywhere on Example University's website mentions that you can GRE multiple times. Nobody explains that yeah, Staff A and Staff B sit ten feet apart but you still have to pay them to swap transcripts.
But that email that said thanks, we'll let you know if anything is missing - that really sucks. I finished my application over two months before the deadline, as thoroughly as I thought I could, or needed to. Someone could have pointed out my omissions a little earlier (I learned of them by chasing my own application by phone today).
So - daft commenter. Evil system. But you - hey you! You applied successfully! Well done! You may now resume tapping your fingers incessantly.
