FAFSA/TAP?	Can't Post

Have any of my fellow NYC people applied for FAFSA? I got an application for TAP in the mail, but the only school listed on it is NYU? Do Columbia, New School, Hunter etc. not take TAP?
Or is it possible that NYU was the only school that got that info?
I'm confused.
Anyone else in the same boat?

I filled out the FAFSA, and got the confirmation report, but as far as I know so far, it hasn't resulted in anything; I mean I have not gotten any mail, e-mails, anything form the schools saying they received it or from loan options.
My acceptance packet from Univ Southern Maine had one single sheet in it about finances, just listing the tuition...so does that mean there's no offer of funding, even a teeny bit? I'll have to call....ditto for Western CT.
Still waiting on word from 4 others - Lesley, Goucher, Queens, New School....

One other thing -- U.So. ME says they want an answer by 3/15 -- egads, no way will I have heard from all others by then, and even if I did, that's not enough time to weigh offers and make decisions....but they did say they could be flexibe about the date....stil...

How can a school not take TAP? Isn't it a government program?

Aubrie, when you filled out the FAFSA, did you make sure to add all of your schools? You can check on your FAFSA on the website. You can fill out the TAP online too. Very easy.

BP, who just so happens to have completed her FAFSA today.

Most likely, the schools won't give you the loan package info (from Fafsa) until you enroll. Then they will send you the paperwork/prom. note to look over and accept/decline 30-60 days before the semester begins. Nothing to really worry about, but if you're concerned you can always call USM and ask if they were forwarded your information.

Stonecoast is awesome...so congrats on that...

I don't want to fill the FAFSA form for the following reasons:

1. I don't think I can qualify for any need-based aid;

2. It asks a lot of personal questions which I'd rather not answer; and

3. I don't think it's required for admission.

In the "Waiting..." thread, some posters said the FAFSA is required for fellowships and TA-ships. But I don't think it has any bearing on admissions decisions.

2) You will have to provide the same information to your school and FAFSA is a trusted organization

3) It's not, but if you can't afford the school without help, it is.

Just got the Cal-Irvine FAFSA e-mail that a lot of people have been talking about...I'll fill it out if for no other reason than to occupy my (currently neurotic) mind...;-)

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship -- Everyone Apply	Can't Post

Hi everybody,

The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship gives fellows seeking an MFA up to $30,000/year stipend in addition to paying tuition and fees for the school program. Application deadline for the 2009-2010 year has passed but you can apply for the 2010-2011 school year. The fellowship covers up to 3 years of an MFA program. This fellowship could be really helpful for those going to unfunded programs especially the ones in expensive New York city. The link is below.

We're a little unclear on whether or not those starting MFA programs this year are eligible for the funding still. If they are they will be eligible for the funding that will start in Fall 2010 so the second year of your program instead of the first. Those seeking the PhD are definitely eligible even if starting their program this Fall. Once again if you win, your funding will start in fall of 2010. For clarity, email OPE_Javits_Program@ed.gov. Give them time to answer as, like all of our schools, they are in their notification period right now. If you'll remember, you may even want to wait until June to email them.

Aubrie,

I live in NY state and filled out the TAP and the FAFSA forms. I am pretty sure your TAP only says NYU because when you fill out the TAP it only allows you to put down one school. BUT, when you find out where you are going, you can change that school, so the TAP applies to the school you will attend. Make sense? It's just some rigid set up on their application but it does not imply that's the only school you can get funding for. As far as I know, all NY state schools are TAP schools.
